e have two ears and one mouth, suggesting that listening is more important than talking. It’s the kind of listening that’s important, however. Just listening with your ears is mundane. Connecting your ears to your heart can be sublime. So exactly how do you listen to your heart? I literally place my hand over my heart and I speak aloud what comes to mind. I do this at the end of my daily meditation session and it’s interesting how

the physical act of placing my hand on my heart really tunes me in. Listening to your heart is a lifetime journey and it can focus you in other ways: pay attention to the sounds all around you! Live mindfully and move gently through the world, listening carefully along the way. The key here is to be quiet. “Listen to your heart above all other voices,” marketing guru Marta Kagan said once. Indeed – there are so many “other voices” out in the world that we really

do need that advice. Interestingly, Kagan is a strategist for creating presentations that punch – and her biggest advice is to simplify. Focus on one thing. That’s great advice for living, too: focus on filtering your life from the heart and all will be well. This article is part of an ongoing series in which I discuss the “12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily” that are at the heart of my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project (see more about the project and the “12 Ways” here: www.IgniteYourOwnLife.com). Each month, I will explore one Way and I will also suggest a site in Houston to visit that I love and that connects to the concept. I believe in not only understanding these 12 ways and words in your head and in your soul, but also experiencing them first-hand. For May, my focus is Way #5: “Listen to your heart. (listen)” and I’m going to suggest that you just get out there and LISTEN. Go hear some live music – how about the Houston Symphony at Jones Hall or a blues band at Axelrad? Find music shows at www.VisitHoustonTexas.com, which is the Greater Houston Convention and Visitor’s Bureau website. Discover what kind of music makes your soul sing and you’ll be well on your way to listening to your heart!
