BERLIN

For most of the latter part of the 20th century, Berlin has stood as a symbol of the division between East and West, split by the infamous fortified wall erected to separate the socialist sector from the democratic district. When the Berlin Wall was pulled down in 1990 the city discovered that it suddenly had two of everything, most notably two very distinct societies separated both socially and economically. The past decade has seen Berlin embracing unification and rebuilding itself as a modern European capital.

Sanssouci is the former summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, in Potsdam, near Berlin. The palace was designed/built by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff between 1745 and 1747 to fulfil King Frederick’s need for a private residence where he could find solitude from the Berlin court. The palace’s name emphasises this; it is a French phrase (sans souci), which translates as “without concerns”, meaning “without worries” or “carefree”, symbolising that the palace was a place for relaxation rather than a seat of power. Sanssouci is little more than a large, single-story villa. Containing just ten principal rooms, it was built on the brow of a terraced hill at the centre of the park. The influence of King Frederick’s personal taste in the design and decoration of the palace was so great that its style is characterised as “Frederician Rococo”. Jan Bouman, a Dutch architect, finished the project. During the 19th century, the palace became a residence of Frederick William IV. The town of Potsdam, with its palaces, was a favourite place of residence for the German imperial family until the fall of the Hohenzollern dynasty in 1918. After World War II, the palace became a tourist attraction in East Germany. Following German reunification in 1990, Frederick’s body was returned to the palace and buried in a new tomb overlooking the gardens he had created. Sanssouci and its extensive gardens became a World Heritage Site in 1990 under the protection of UNESCO in 1995.

Berlin Wall

Eastside Gallery The remains of the infamous Berlin Wall have now become the largest open-air art gallery in the world. The longest section of the wall, which has been preserved, stretches from Ostbahnhof Station to the Oberbaumbrucke, and has been given over to graffiti artists. A total of 118 artists from 21 countries have exerted their skills on the 4,318 foot (1,316m) long section of the wall, and this collection has become a Berlin landmark and a tourist attraction. Some of the best known paintings are Dimitri Vrubel’s Brotherly Kiss and Gunther Shaefer’s Fatherland. The gallery is billed as an international memorial for freedom and the art reflects the idealism and excitement of 1989 and 1990 when the wall was pulled down.

Asisi Panorama and the Berlin Wall

Full-DAY TRIP: BERLIN TO DRESDEN Take a day trip with private bus and tour guide to Dresden – the royal residence of the Kings of Saxony, named ‘The Pearl of the Baroque’ which is still today considered one of Germany’s most beautiful cities. Dresden is however more widely known for the devastating Allied bombing campaign of February 1945. US and Royal Air Force bombers dropped some 3,900 tons of high-explosive and incendiary bombs on the city in the space of three days, destroying 13 square miles of the city. Explore the restored Old Town, including the famous Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche), the Semper Opera House, the ‘Balcony of Europe’ – once Dresden’s defensive rampart on the River Elbe, and the Zwinger Palace, a medieval fortress that houses the Old Masters Gallery, featuring works by Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens and others. Find out about Dresden through the ages: from the time of Augustus the Strong, on to the horrors of wartime, the Communist era and of course the vibrant city of today. THE BERLIN WALL – The asisi Panorama on a divided Berlin by the artist Yadegar Asisi at Checkpoint Charlie at the corner of Friedrichstraße and Zimmerstraße, consists of a cylindrical steel rotunda that displays a panorama of the daily routine on both sides of the Berlin Wall on an autumn day in the 1980s. Asisi, who actually lived in Kreuzberg in the 1980s, has bundled his memories in the panorama and goes into great detail in his narration of stories, which would not have happened that way at the same time. You will learn about the discussions that took place between Churchill, Truman and Stalin, which were to seal the fate of Cold War Europe for the next half century. Der Kleine Prinz FC In Baden-Baden, the Rademacher family took Antoine de SaintExupéry’s charming storybook tale “The Little Prince” as an inspiration for decorating their hotel. Each of the 40 charming rooms and suites has its own individual note, character and atmosphere as well as all modern conveniences you would expect. No two rooms are alike. Each has its own decor and none of the rooms are standard. You will experience a truly unique atmosphere, personal attention and perfect service!

With a history dating back over 150 years and fashioned on the lines of French royal palaces, the Baden-Baden Casino is a temple to the game of chance. At one time, real silver and gold chips were used in the gaming. The games available are casino favourites e.g. roulette, blackjack, baccarat and poker. The Baden-Baden Casino is the oldest in Germany. The Madame Pompadour Room is even named after the mistress of Louis XV. In 1872, the German government ordered the closing of all German casinos. It would be another 61 years, in 1933, that it would be reopened. It was open until 1944 and then closed again until 1950.

After a walk through the narrow streets of Schnoor Quarter with tiny houses, we turn travel the famous German Fairy Tale Route. In the afternoon we reach Hamelin, a city known for the Pied Piper, another legend that appears in the writings of the Brothers Grimm. German Christmas Markets The magical world of traditional German Christmas Markets is casting more visitors under its spell every year! The historic Christmas Markets, held in cities, towns and villages throughout the country, are becoming increasingly more popular, due, no doubt, to the enchanting Festive Season atmosphere they evoke. The Christmas fairs and markets of Germany are unique. If you're tired of commercialism taking over this holiday period and would like to get right away for a real traditional and romantic Christmas Market, you may wish to consider heading to Germany where gifts are not mass-produced but craft work of real quality! Here you can purchase all kinds of Christmas merchandise and gifts, especially traditional things such as crib figurines, toys, wood carvings, marionettes, candles and lambskin shoes. Many are difficult to resist - as will be the glass of delicious mulled wine you are offered and the baked apples that are very welcome on crisp winter days. The ambience is further enhanced by the aromas of hot chestnuts, grilled sausages and other tasty snacks! There are few city skylines more striking than Dresden’s with its delicate spires, towering towers and domes belonging to palaces, churches and stately buildings. ‘Florence of the north’, the Saxon capital was called in the 18th century, a central hub of artistic activity presided over by the Augustus the Strong (August der Starke) and his son Augustus III. Their vision produced many of Dresden’s iconic buildings, including the Zwinger, the Frauenkirche and the Hofkirche. That any of these building are still standing is a miracle. On the night of 13 February 1945, in the waning days of WWII, an Allied firebombing campaign reduced the baroque city to a heap of rubble. Somewhere between 25,000 and 100,000 civilians were killed as a direct result of these attacks. The surviving city’s spirit of determination is captured in the rebuilt Frauenkirche. The city celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2006 and continues to evolve with great new architecture, an arts and cultural scene, and pub and nightlife quarters.
