A Veerhuis is an ecofriendly, low-cost, energysaving, low GHG-emission, healthy, safe, strong, better,low maintenance and high quality house suitable for all climates and all cultures and suitable on a global level.
The essence of the VeerHouse is the use of an already existing insulation material – Expanded Poly Styrene (EPS) – as a full fledged building material for the ―SKIN‖ of the building only, thereby reducing and or replacing the use of bricks, stones, cement, concrete and wood. The use of certain traditional materials such as insulation and Tyvek paper is eliminated altogether.

Production of EPS uses 50% less Energy in comparison with alternative materials (GUA:Gesellschaft fur umfassende Analysen.www.plasticeurope.org) EPS produces 7 times less GHG emission than alternative materials (GUA) Chemically neutral and neutral to the environment. Burning of EPS produces less harmful materials in comparison to for example wool, cork or even wood.
Feedstock Energy is about 50 MJ/kg; however during proper combustion or thermal recycling 80% is regained. Product energy is 40MJ/kg. Because EPS has a low density the Energy Content ( feedstock + Production Energy) per square meter is lower than other insulating materials. 1Litre Fossil Fuel used for the production of EPS saves 200 Litres Fossil Fuel for combustion It will save energy and it will stop the depletion of other important natural resources such as wood, sand, cement and potable water. Cement, chalk or gypsum will not affect the material. In fact the whole construction can be done virtually without cement (cement is worldwide responsible for 10% of the CO2 emission). Less transport with heavy machinery and trucks, leading to a decrease in transport, less traffic problems and a decrease in fine dust. A dramatic decrease in energy consumption of up to 70% with a concommitant reduction of Green House Gases(GHG).
