“Kai Kapu, Kai Ola” (Restricted Ocean, Living Ocean) Represents discipline, faith, and respect for authority.

Manaʻo: “This 2021 AHCC Convention theme reminds us of our kūpuna who put restrictions on fishing and gathering so that ocean resources could regenerate. They depended on fish, limu, wana, hāʻukeʻuke, heʻe and more for their sustenance. The lives of kānaka depended on seasonal kapu. Today, we are promoting well-being and health by new restricted behaviors: mask wearing and social distancing. While those “kapu” were placed on us more than a year ago in 2020, we will never forget those important lessons.” Manu Boyd

Convention Theme:

“Kai Kapu! Kai Ola!” Ianuali 14, 2022 E kū i ke kapu! E kū i ke ola – E ola mau kākou! ‘Oiai, i loko i ka waihona ‘ike o ko kākou po‘e kūpuna, he mau ha‘awina ho‘i e ho‘oho‘okikina mai nei iā ‘oukou e ‘auamo i nā hana o ke ku‘ikahi, ke kaulike, ka pono a me ke aloha – ‘o ke kahua ho‘i ia no kākou e kū ha‘aheo nei nō ho‘i! Within the wise guidance of our kūpuna we are charged to engage in unity, harmony, balance (and of course) aloha – this indeed is the precipice on which we stand with dignity as a people. “Kai kapu! Kai Ola” dictates to me personally what is stated in Ecclesiastes 3, that there is a “time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” The entire chapter accounts for struggle and challenge, and yet all is summarized at the end of the chapter (verse 22), “ So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?” – a reminder for me that the essential and critical impact of the work of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs must endure and persevere throughout any challenges, stumbling blocks or barriers that have been placed in our way; as our future is reliant and directly impacted by our actions and even our omissions. So, let our actions (not our omissions) lift our legacy as an Association. E Ola! As Pelekikena of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, I welcome all delegates, alternates, members and guests to the 62nd annual convention of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs. We hoped that convention would return to be an in-person one. Although this proved impossible, eia ho‘i hou kākou ready to ‘auamo the work before the 62nd annual convention. For the first time in our history, we will hold two conventions in the same calendar year. It is my hope that we all can appreciate that many challenges have attempted to overturn and disrupt the planning for this convention. Now that we are here, I ask as Pelekikena that we implore the aforementioned guidance of our kūpuna in engaging the values of ku‘ikahi, kaulike, pono and aloha to resolve the work before us. I continue to be inspired by Prince Kalaniana‘ole’s work ethic, spirit, tenacity and leadership. Over the last year we commemorated the 150th birthday of our Ke Ali‘i Maka‘āinana, we commemorated the 100th anniversary of the passage of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act and most recently, solemnly remembered the 100th anniversary of the passing of our great chief. Let the legacy of the work we do not be entangled by procedures and barriers; but let the work before us shine brightly as a guiding inspiration for our mo‘opuna 100 years from now when they look back and note how we persevered through the challenges of the time; for the seas, although unpredictable are sacred and living! “Kai Kapu! Kai Ola! E ola kākou!!

Me Ke Aloha! Hailama V.K.K. Farden, 18th Pelekikena of the AHCC

Our number of meetings greatly increased as we utilized video conferencing for the majority of our gatherings. We also shot and created a video for Ke Aloha ʻ ina that shares our work and was broadcast at the Kauikeaouli concert.

We also continue to collaborate and partner with other community organizations like the Friends of Kaumualiʻi who led the creation and installation of a statue of King Kaumualiʻi at P ʻulaʻula in Waimea. In March 2021, we also participated in the installation ceremony of the bronze statue and we invite all to visit Kaumualiʻi on your next visit to Kauaʻi Mana I Mauli Ola presentation on King Kaumualiʻi
Kaumualiʻi Hawaiian Civic Club partnered with OHA Kauaʻi Of ce to host the Mana I Mauli Ola presentation on King Kaumualiʻi. It was co-moderated by our member Malia Nobrega-Olivera and Kaliko Santos from Queen Deborah Kapule HCC. The guests included kupuna Aletha Kaohi and Maureen Fodale of Friends of King Kaumualiʻi. On December 20, 2020 newly elected N Lei Makalapua of cers from across four continental times zones virtually met. The goal of that rst gathering was to create a sense of pilina and agree to our individual understanding of our separate kuleana and how our kuleana can hilo together for committed Council leadership. We of cially took of ce on January 1, 2021. Since the rst of the year Executive Of cers have kept in frequent contact, albeit virtually, with N Lei Makalapuaʻs seventeen clubs located in eleven states and the District of Columbia. In most instances clubs are earnestly trying to maintain or recapture former membership count which primarily is attributable to the 2020 health devastation that crippled the lives of our members and those close to them. The kanaka is resilient, despite unavoidable loss in some cases. Resilience was manifested in determined clubs who chose to cautiously remain visible and active in their communities. Volunteerism at the Council level has been extraordinary. AHCCʻs ZOOM licenses offered to clubs were very welcomed tools in todayʻs challenging times. N Lei Makalapua submitted written support of several prospective federal level appointees—which individuals were eventually appointed and con rmed. N Lei Makalapua has also been supportive of efforts to desist hate crimes in membersʻ communities. We are grateful for dedicated and committed members who love the work of the Hawaiian Civic Clubs and willingly give of themselves to the AHCC, N Lei Makalapua, and their clubs. Prayers are continually offered to Ke Akua it will be a healthier year next year for all. Me ka aloha,
 Carol N lani Johnson

' inahau o Kaleponi Hawaiian Civic Club sends its warmest aloha to the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs and the O'ahu council for its hospitality. ' inahau continues to diligently adhere to its administrative duties such as holding board and general membership meetings each month, maintaining an annual budget, and executing programming projects through standing committees such as scholarship, website, health education and community outreach. ' inahau maintains a working partnership with the Paci c Islander Health Partnership to bring Covid-19 testing, vaccination, outreach and education to the Native Hawaiian and Paci c Islander community. Our club members continue to assist kupuna with transportation to and from vaccination sites. Monthly community events are scheduled through the end of the year. In addition to Covid-19 testing and vaccination, we will provide masks, sanitizers, food, school supplies and information on how to access health care and other resources. We continue to check on our club members and the Hawaiian community at large during this time of the pandemic. Phase II of our phone banking wellness checks will start in the fall to con rm their continued safety and wellness. We were able to award a scholarship to a pre-med senior of Hawaiian ancestry attending Stanford University. He hopes to incorporate Native Hawaiian practices into his career. One of our members, Andrea ‘Boomie’ Olalia, hosts a podcast titled "State of Aloha". She used one of her podcasts as a fund raiser for our club. We also held a laulau and Portuguese sausage sale and virtual Christmas party last year in which Hawaiian Santa visited our keiki and mo’opuna. ' inahau continues to collaborate with the Aquarium of the Paci c. This year their celebration of Paci c Islander Heritage was held virtually.

Hui Hawai`i O Tenesi Hawaiian Civic Club continues its mission to perpetuate the Hawaiian Culture and Aloha Spirit. Our primary function is to support the cultural needs of our military members and families of Fort Campbell Army Post, many of which have been transferred from Hawai`i or are Native Hawaiians serving in the military. In 2021, with COVID-19, many of our activities had to be cancelled just like in 2020.
Our hui continues to share the culture at the Clarksville Downtown Marketplace during the summer with ono kalua pork sales, crafts, and Tennessee grown Hawaiian plant sales. This provides an excellent opportunity to interact with the community as well as a source of fundraising for our club. . We are looking forward to the Veterans Day Parade as well as the Christmas Parade where we show off our oat with a volcano. Our adult members participated in a taro plant workshop conducted by our club’s plant grower where they learned how to plant and malama their taro plant as well as the culture signi cance of taro to the Hawaiian people. Keiki speci c workshops are planned for the future. Hui Hawai`i O Tenesi Hawaiian Civic Club is proud to further the vision of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanian`ole.

We send to you our fondest Aloha Ya’al

Entering into 2021, KALO was lled with the exhilaration of having just participated as a chartered organization in their rst ever AOHCC Convention. Having submitted a very controversial resolution and getting it passed with the help of other clubs, we learned a lot about our own resilience and perseverance. We paved the way for open communications about black and mixed race heritage. Our voices were heard at the highest levels of government. We also learned a lot about the mechanics of our AOHCC Convention, better preparing KALO to serve its L hui As Covid-19 progressed through our nation, KALO continued to narrow the health equity gap being experienced by our Paci c Islanders. We, together with other Paci c Island organizations, sponsored and participated in more than 6 vaccine clinics. Our Club is a little over 85% vaccinated
KALO continues to provide multiple cultural online events and workshops. Through Na Kamaliʻi Talk Story, we offer a safe platform for our ʻ pio to explore and engage in topics of their choosing We continue to partner with local and Hawaiʻi based organizations and through very generous grants have been able to further help our L hui. In August, we co-sponsored the First Annual Pasi ka Unity Festival. More than 1200 people attended this all day free event which showcased Paci c Island songs and dances. Kalani Peʻa, appearing for the rst time in a live concert since the pandemic, was our featured guest artist.

HCC Email: Like everyone else, COVID impacted all aspects of Kauwahi ʻAnaina Hawaiʻi HCC for the period from November 2020 – the present (August 2021). However, the hui was able to accomplish several of the goals set forth by the committees and Executive Board.
Scholarships—In December 2020 two scholarships were awarded to individuals who were in graduate school. In July of 2021 three scholarships were awarded to high school graduates who will be attending universities. Membership—At the end of year 2020 KAHHCC listed 31 paid members. The present number of paid members is 46, an increase of 15 members or 48%. Members are encouraged to be actively engaged in recruiting new members, especially younger ones.
Service—Some of our members experienced nancial hardship, surgeries, COVID 19, injuries, and loss of loved ones. Hui members were supportive and kept in touch with each other. Generous amounts of food were given at Thanksgiving. The Hospitality/Social/Health committee members have an effective “telephone tree” that was much appreciated by the acitve and non-active members. A monthly newsletter shared information with members as well as reminders about events pertinent to the Hawaiian community. Virtual Meetings—Starting in March 2021 and continuing to June, meetings were held via Zoom. This provided a social time as well as an educational experience with na mea. Although “attendance” was not always satisfactory, those who participated enjoyed the meetings. In July and August meetings were scheduled in city parks. The July meeting was very successful—everyone loved being together in person. The August meeting had to be cancelled because of poor air quality that would have been hazardous to the health of our members. Fund Raising—The initial laulau fundraiser was held in October of 2020 and was successful nancially but the camaraderie and social interaction of those who worked making the laulau was the important and bene cial takeaway. A laulau and poke fundraiser was held in May 2021 and preparations are being made for another one in September. This is one event that has attracted the interest of young people.

Our summary of activities in 2021: Until the onset of the covid crisis, we met and worked monthly at Ulup Heiau and had committed to maintaining six of the iwi kupuna burial preserves in Kailua. Although our "live" presence has been considerably diminished since February 2020, we continue to be active in matters electronic and virtual. As a founding member of Hui Maunawili-Kawainui, we persist in working to secure almost a thousand acres of Maunawili lands for conservation and cultural purposes. As one of Kailua's ve native Hawaiian organizations dedicated to re-establishing a permanent Hawaiian cultural presence in Kailua and at Kawainui, we continue to participate in community work, events, and meetings, and to m lama ʻ ina. Our yearly activities include: cleaning Mauna ʻAla (July), supporting the Kailua Houseless Service Care Program by providing 50 individual meals to our houseless community (August), and offering three postsecondary scholarships of $1,000 each to club members and their families (September). Finally, we are proud to share that our members generously donated the beautiful lei hulu, fashioned by Norma-Jean Lehuanani Chock of Kahailimanu, that were presented to our four presiding of cers, of the Board of Directors of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, at their installation in July.

From Legacy to Histor The Kukui Lamakū Recognition was founded and initiated in 1989 by then Association of Hawaiian Civic Club President Jalna Keala. She strongly believed in giving recognition to our kūpuna who are civic club members that have led the way for us and who have not received any kind of an Association award The following Association President Bruss Keppeler, loved the idea and imbedded the Kukui Lamakū Recognition into the convention agenda. The Kukui Lamakū is a heartfelt recognition of a few people by their ‘Ahahui Pelekikena. It is not a competitive award. The kūpuna are the ones who enlighten us with the FLAME or KUKUI over the years in their quiet humble, supportive way without being in the limelight over a period of time . . . not this year, or last year, but sustained services they have provided throughout their unique lifetime It was Aunty Betty Jenkins a member of Aliʻi Pauahi Hawaiian Civic Club, who came up with the idea and the name for this prestigious award. “It is a good one” she said “very descriptive with the kaona”. When you think about it, we can think of many kūpuna, we all know of them, we know of someone and their lives have expressed the nest and the very best of our Hawaiian values

Theodora “Tee” Furtado ʻAhahui o Nā Lei Makalapua ʻAhahui Kīwila Hawaiʻi ʻO San Dieg The Mainland Council honoree for the 2021 Kukui Lamakū is Theodora “Tee” Furtado of ʻAhahui Kīwila Hawaiʻi ʻO San Diego. In Teeʻs quiet, humble and supportive way, she has enlightened us with the ame of the kukui for many years. Tee is a mentor who inspires young leaders to be ready and willing to learn key issues and processes, promote information exchange, and motivate member engagement Tee has always been a strong advocate for education. She began her teaching career in the Los Angeles County area where she taught her specialty, mathematics. She moved south to the San Diego, California area in the late 1980ʻs. In early 2000 Tee accepted the position as Principal of the Blessed Sacrament School in San Diego, and remained as Principal until she retired in 2016 During her entire professional career Tee continued to be involved in the Hawaiian Civic Clubs. She was one of the founding members of ʻAhahui Kīwila Hawaiʻi ʻO San Diego, Kaha I Ka Panoa Kaleponi, and Hui Hawaiʻi O Tenesī. Tee continues to be supportive of Civic Clubs in cultural teachings such as lei hulu, Hawaiian food preparation and, of course, educational

She now has 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren As the current Matriarch of the Farden ‘Ohana, music has de nitely been beautifully woven throughout her lifetime. As a child, Bernie learned hula from Iolani Luahine. She played the clarinet in her youth and often sang with Donald at family luau(s) as a duet, to the Hawaiian Wedding song or E Māliu Mai, composed by her Aunt Irmgard Aluli. In 2004, when Bernie was called to join the reopening of the Lāhaina Hawaiian Civic Club, she was so happy and proud to do so. Her grandfather, Charles Farden, was the 1st Vice President for West Maui HCC (later named Lahaina Hawaiian Civic Club) and since moving to Maui in 2015, she is continuously always willing to help in any way she is able to

Ralph Arthur “Skip” Forrest, Jr Moku O Manōkalanip Hanalei Hawaiian Civic Clu Moku O Manōkalanipō’s honoree for the 2021 Kukui Lamakū is Ralph Arthur “Skip” Forrest, Jr. of Hanalei Hawaiian Civic Club. He is a constant burning torch for his civic club and community In 1973, the Hanalei Hawaiian Civic Club reached out to the youth in their community by forming the Hanalei Civic Canoe Club. The advancement and gathering of youth lured the families of these keiki, increased membership and set the foundation for the success and longevity of the Hanalei Hawaiian Civic Club. In 1983, a mere decade into the canoe club’s founding, Skip became a member and met his wife, Kainoa Chandler. Marrying into the Chandler ʻohana - an ʻohana which substantially helped charter and build the club – came with great kuleana for not only the club but also the community. Skip has been a constant burning torch of the community, ful lling this kuleana for over 30 years, supporting his wife, Kainoa, and daughter, Lilinoe, in growing both the wahine and ‘ōpio paddling programs. Through his many roles over the years, he has taught hundreds of people about paddling, respect for the ocean, reverance for the canoe, and the values of the club and the Hawaiian culture. He has also served as a director for many years. Skip has shouldered kuleana when no one else wanted to and stayed loyal to the club through victory and defeat. He has been instrumental in encouraging the next generation of leaders to uphold the mission and objectives of the club. Perhaps his greatest contributions have been his ve children, all whom have taken active leadership positions within the clubs and broader community. “Uncle Skip,” as most know him, has not only been a constant burning torch of the Hanalei Hawaiian Civic Club, but till today, continues to stoke the res of many up and coming alakaʻi in the community. It is with greatly pride that the Hanalei Hawaiian Civic Club and Moku O Manōkalanipō recognizes and honors Ralph Arthur “Skip” Forrest Jr. for his many years served. Ku ka lau lama, many torches stand
