HOK Science + Technology
designing places that work for people.
an introduction to HOK’s Science + Technology facilities + capabilities
trends in science Moving the design of science environments forward is a driving force of the HOK Science + Technology group. From multidisciplinary research, evolving pedagogies for science education and forward thinking scientific workplace design, this group is at the forefront of the profession in understanding emerging issues and trends.
scientific workplace Like the practice of science itself, the formula for creating the ideal scientific workplace that helps organizations focus on research continues to evolve. Testing new workplace ideas, measuring outcomes and making improvements over time can transform the workplace as well as the research it supports. Considering the office, traditional laboratory and all the workspaces in between, a giant laboratory for new ideas, processes and technologies is appropriate — and perhaps essential — for advancing science.
academic workplace Just as companies are seeking more interdisciplinary and collaborative workplace solutions, so are colleges and universities. In turn, they’re looking to designers for approaches that solve their unique challenges around Culture, Space and Tools. As the academic world looks outside of traditional design responses, they’re finding exciting new answers that are minimizing space while they bring together students and faculty.
innovation hubs As the competition for students, faculty, researchers and funding becomes more intense; how will your institution compete? What experiences will you offer them to create continuous learners that succeed and give back to others? Through an exploration of the evolution of Maker Spaces as they become more inclusive of all disciplines, we propose the concept of the Innovation Hub: a transformative creative catalyst where learners and doers from every walk of life can come together to think, share, and create whatever they can imagine.
translational research The breaking down of individual silos and shift to a team-based, cooperative approach has become a necessity in translational research. The resulting paradigm shift has affected funding and also how facilities are being designed and upgraded. These fast-moving changes mean design must bridge the gap between discovery and patient care -- forcing design teams to think outside their own traditional boxes. While the initial experiences of researchers at those facilities are mostly positive, the design community can build upon these experiences when developing frameworks for future translational research facilities.
well buildings Furthering HOK’s aspiration to enhance people’s lives through design, we are pioneering well building design. Our participation in the Well Living Lab Alliance means we’re involved at the ground level with important research on how the built environment impacts human health. HOK’s expertise in architectural and interior design combined with our access to this research through the Well Living Lab will allow us to translate our research into insights that inform building design.
