directly adjacent to the Sanford Burnham Institute, the new center takes a dramatic form to represent the innovative, collaborative and life changing activities housed inside. The research areas include two floors of open laboratories consisting of large, ballroom plan island bench areas with mobile sinks and casework, supported by fume hood and BSC alcoves and other support functions at either side, and are located to maximize the views of the wooded preserve to the south. A glass wall along the inboard side of the research laboratories provides a visual connection to the office zone for faculty and graduate students. One floor is devoted specifically to research conducted in enhanced environments.

The first floor of the building accommodates a state of the art conference center, consisting of a large, media-rich auditorium, break out conference rooms, and a large media-equipped lobby capable of accommodating social, academic and student events. Amenities are centrally located to support and connect the laboratories and offices. The remainder of the first floor is clinical research space operated by the Institute on Aging, an interdisciplinary group involved in the areas of research, education and health care across all UF Colleges and Departments. Passive and active design strategies throughout the building led to LEED Platinum Certification.

Originally intended as three separate building programs, it was determined that a combined, single building offered economic efficiencies and a unique environment to promote student and faculty interaction. As an integral part of its surrounding community, the building includes flexible research and teaching lab spaces to accommodate targeted learning programs in cooperation with the high technology corporate neighbors, and a dental clinic that offers services to the community.
