DEAN'S MESSAGE I certainly am pleased to add a few words to this year's Pocket Part.

The Yearbook represents the culmination of a student's academic career at the Hofstra Law School. It recognizes each member of the graduating class and provides a permanent record of your years here, including remembrances of the faculty with whom you studied and the organizations with which your were affiliated. As I said last year, the Pocket Part is a pleasurable memoir which in an informal way records some of the diversions from the rigors of the curriculum, examinations and other professional and academic demands. It is a souvenir of fun and friends and extra-curricular activities that make up the full life of a law student. And in that respect it will serve as a diary of what I hope has been for each of you, a positive experience in the study of law.

I congratulate each of you on the completion of your studies and I wish you every success in your personal and professional lives ahead.

June 2, 1988 Dear Graduates: As lawyers, you will be confronted with many moral challenges in the practice of law.

A story is told about a famous Sufi master who was called upon to judge a certain case. After hearing the claimant's story he exclaimed, "This man speaks the truth." The second litigant then related his version of the facts after which the master once again said, "This man speaks the truth."

Finally, one of the attendant students asked, "Master, how can both these men speak the truth?" The master answered softly, "This man also speaks the truth."

This fable illustrates the dilemma lawyers often face in determining the truth. Many come to believe that truth is relative. As a result, they compromise their values in order to win small legal victories.

If you enter the practice of law without a code of personal moral values, I believe you will never fully understand the purpose of your profession which is to serve justice. Let your hearts and minds be your guide and serve no master other than truth, the handmaiden of justice.
