Herbert School students will produce live coverage of a variety of Hofstra Pride intercollegiate games in a new sports television control room. WRHU Studios and Sports Desk are capable of creating professional audio, video, and social media content. The Content Suite provides a collaborative and flexible meeting space. The Vertical Video Lab is outfitted with a green screen, teleprompter, and editing software to create high-quality content for social media.

Production studios, such as the three-story, 3,750 squarefoot Studio A, and Studio B for news production, feature 4K/ UHD broadcast cameras. A post-production facility includes an editing classroom, screening room, color correction suite, and Foley/ADR audio studio. Students can record podcasts and mix live music and talk shows in the multimedia audio studio and control room. Industry standard field and mobile equipment is available for coursework and projects.

JOURNALISM Launch your career in New York City with access to the world’s most renowned news outlets. Gain expertise in news writing and reporting, shooting and editing video, digital storytelling, podcasting, social media, and using the latest industry tools and software. You may pursue a concentration in either Broadcast Journalism, with such coursework as multimedia journalism, feature reporting, newscast producing and anchoring, or a concentration in Sports Journalism, focusing on sports reporting for print, television, digital, radio and podcast formats. The journalism program is fully accredited, distinguishing it as one of the finest in the country. The WABC-TV/Eyewitness News Long Island Bureau, located in WRHU’s newsroom, gives students exposure to professional journalists, internships, guest speakers, and other special events.

MASTER THE TRENDS THAT SHAPE YOUR FUTURE. Discover the aspects of media that most interest you and build an in-depth understanding of how media works and how it impacts society. You will have the choice of pursuing one of three concentrations: Media and Culture; Urban and Suburban Communication; or Media, Law, and Policy. A versatile degree in Mass Media Studies is a gateway to a rewarding career in a wide variety of fields such as law, management, politics, journalism, and education.

Prepare for an exciting and creative career that combines a passion for writing, current events, popular culture, and media, with the ability to solve problems, think strategically, and communicate effectively. At the Herbert School, you will develop skills in digital and social media, integrated marketing, crisis communication, online video content, copywriting, and media relations. A concentration in Entertainment Public Relations provides knowledge that surveys celebrity culture and entertainment-focused media, while the Sports Promotion concentration focuses on coursework in sports reporting, promotion, sports media, branding and culture.

This flexible, 30-credit graduate program can be completed in as few as three semesters and personalized to meet your professional goals - with optional concentrations in Crisis and Reputation Management or Marketing. Pursue your passion for the art of filmmaking and learn the cinematic storytelling fundamentals applicable to all branches of the industry - from production design to management companies to the director’s chair. Study the great filmmakers, develop your unique vision, and apply the skills you’ve mastered to write, direct, produce, design, and edit your own projects. SCRIPTED SUCCESS START HERE. Prepare to stand out in any writers’ room, starting inside the Herbert School’s own dedicated space for scriptwriting, teleplays, and screenplays. The BFA in Writing for the Screen provides you with the necessary tools for writing across all platforms. As the demand for new material continues to increase, start crafting your own portfolio in one of the most exciting and creative fields in media.

A BFA in Filmmaking guides you toward the complete process of creating a film. Building on a foundation of production and writing, and complemented by film history, theory, and aesthetics — you’ll receive an in-depth education in your specific field of interest. Take a wide range of specialized courses, whether your interest is cinematography, sound design, editing, screenwriting or directing.

Located within the Herbert School, WRHU Radio Hofstra University is dedicated to providing pre-professional broadcast training. Representing more than 60 years of broadcast excellence, WRHU’s impressive alumni span leadership and talent positions across the media industry.

The four-time Marconi Award-winning station has been home to the New York Islanders for more than a decade. WRHU was the first student-run station to receive the World Radio Day Award, presented by the Academy of Radio Arts and Sciences of America to stations that exemplify the best attributes of the radio industry. The station has also received first place rankings from The Princeton Review, College Media Association, and BestColleges.
