Weather permitting, our outdoor ice rinks and sled hills are great ways to get the kids outside and enjoy some good old fashioned winter fun. Outdoor skating is available at three parks where a flag system is used: South Ridge, Fabbrini and Evergreen. We have two sled hills at Pine Park and Seascape Family Aquatic Center. Please follow the flag system to ensure your safety – a yellow flag means proceed with caution, a red flag means it is not safe. Remember, ice skating is not permitted on lakes and ponds without a flag system or where a red flag is displayed. You can always check our website or mobile app for the conditions of our sled hills and skate ponds. A perfect opportunity to get outdoors is Winter Fest on Sat. Dec. 12 at Bridges of Poplar Creek. We’ll have a variety of fun activities, crafts and game. Come out before or after Winter Fest for Breakfast with Santa. And, the tradition continues on Sunday, Dec. 20 when kids can Skate with Santa at the Triphahn Center Ice Arena. If indoor recreation is what you’re looking for, we offer several convenient drop-in sports programs for adults, where no registration is required. Simply stop at the front desk and pay the drop-in fee. Drop-in Pickleball is available at Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center for 50+ adults (pg. 34). Drop-in exercise classes and Volleyball can be found at Triphahn Center for 50+ adults (pg. 24). Open Gym Basketball (pg. 29) and Ice Hockey (pg. 26) are offered at the Triphahn Center. Willow Recreation Center offers Drop-in Volleyball (pg. 34).

Of course, all winter our three fabulous fitness centers will be buzzing with our local community coming together to work toward fitness goals. Stop by for a tour of Prairie StoneTM Sports & Fitness Center, Triphahn Center and Ice Arena or Willow Recreation Center. On behalf of the Park Board of Commissioners and the entire staff of the Hoffman Estates Park District, I wish you and your loved ones a happy holiday season and a safe and prosperous new year! The winter months can be a wonderful time to enjoy nature and the beauty of our parks. While there aren’t as many outdoor activities during the winter, don’t let the winter weather keep you indoors! Fresh air and Vitamin D are beneficial for kids of all ages, not to mention the sense of well-being that is gained from time spent in nature. Take a winter walk through your neighborhood park and you’ll be surprised at what wonders you may see. For a full list of our parks and our new Park Map see pages 38-39.

Who Are We? It is in the best interest of our whole community to encourage a healthy lifestyle for all. The Friends of HE Parks Foundation is a dedicated group of community volunteers who raise money so that more residents can participate in and enjoy recreational opportunities, regardless of their social, physical or economic circumstances and limitations. Studies have shown that physical activity and recreation are imperative to maintaining health. It is the mission of the Hoffman Estates Park District and the Foundation to promote the health and well-being of residents through first class facilities and programs. What Do We Do?

The Friends of HE Parks Scholarship Fund seeks to strengthen community and family ties by providing a funding source to finance recreational scholarships to the disadvantaged in the Hoffman Estates community, while also funding special recreation projects. The recreational scholarships help families facing financial hardships with an opportunity to enjoy the same recreational and leisure opportunities as their neighbors. The Friends of HE Parks Scholarship Fund also helps fund needed community programs that enhance the physical, recreational, educational and cultural life for Hoffman Estates residents, wheelchair accessible school bus for summer camp, community field trips and the jumbo movie screen for free family movie nights.

Our teachers combine this diverse curriculum with a nurturing environment and a healthy balance of playtime to encourage students’ physical, emotional, social and creative development. And through encouragement, understanding and respect, they help provide a positive atmosphere for learning. We believe that children learn best when parents and teachers work together and support each other, therefore, we encourage the active involvement of parents.

On My Own

Sticky Fingers

Kids Yoga

Children will gain independence through fun and socialization in this class. Activities include crafts, songs and stories. This is the perfect first experience of working towards being on my own. Parents will stay the entire first class and 1/2 of the second and third class. Parents will not attend class after the third week.

Playdough, silly putty and “clean mud” are just a few of the soft, squishy concoctions we will be making and playing with in this hands on class. The children will help follow a recipe to create gooey mixtures out of everyday, household ingredients like flour, liquid soap, salt, water and even glue. Math and science concepts will be incorporated as we count and measure ingredients and watch one form of matter transform into another!! Please wear clothes that can get messy or bring a smock. Come join the sticky fun!

Yoga comes to life in these fun and creative classes designed to stimulate a young child’s growing curiosity. Playful yoga poses, animated breathing exercises, and imaginative relaxation techniques will advance the child’s language development, motor coordination, and play skills.

Each week children will travel into “storybook land” by reading a classic children’s book. Children will expand on the ideas of the book by creating an art project, singing songs, participating in fingerplays and through creative movement. Enrich a child’s mind through books. Different books are covered each session. Children enrolled in Willow class should bring their own lunch; class time includes lunch time. Instructor: Monique LiPetri (TC) & Dilnaaz Rustomji (WRC). Bye Bye Birdie Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace

One of the most captivating musical shows of our time, Bye Bye Birdie is a satire done with the fondest affection. It gives an insight into the everyday life that is very much part of us all. It is the tops in imagination and frivolity; a show that will be enjoyed by the cast as much as the audience. It tells the story of a rock and roll singer who is about to be inducted into the army. Watch as the singer, Conrad Birdie, an Elvis Presley type, bids a typical American teen-age girl goodbye with an all-American kiss. Show ticket, lunch & Park District transportation included in fee. Please select entrée upon registration. All entrées will be served with the soup of the day, dinner rolls, a choice of one beverage, and the chef’s selection of potato, vegetable, and dessert. Junior Wolf Pack Starter Skating Program

Wolf Pack Hockey Skills Development

Skating is the most important skill required to properly execute the other 4 major skills (stickhandling, passing, shooting and safe checking) and enjoy playing the most enjoyable sport there is for life. This program is designed to give all young starter hockey players the essential skating foundation to progress into the renowned Hoffman Estates Park District Development Program. Getting it right from the beginning is very important. Our superb professional instructors will ensure keen students enjoy great progress in a fun environment.

This renowned training is for players 5-15 years that have graduated from the Jr Wolf Pack Starter Skater Program where the skating skills enable the learning and execution of the other 4 major skills (stick handling, passing, shooting and safe checking) Although the focus on the program remains the mastering of the “Sumo System” of skating it also includes training in stick work and small area games. The goal is to prepare players to advance to joining a Wolf Pack hockey team. Players are to supply USA Hockey approved hockey helmet with full face mask and a stick (purchase low cost stick that comes up to nose without skates and has minimal curve). All other equipment is available up to certain sizes. Price includes both days.

Figure skating is a technical sport with many intricate moves and elements that can take several weeks or months to achieve. Coaches provide the critical instruction needed to achieve the proper technique and desired look of the element, instant feedback and critique and training needed to learn new elements. Skaters learning the basics in classes will receive group instruction and will learn the breakdown and beginning steps to how an element like forward skating should be performed. In group lessons the instructor’s goal is for skaters to be able to accomplish the elements learned with minimal mistakes. Private lessons allow the skater even more in depth critique and mastery of the element.

Green Initiative/Conservation

We’re Embracing the “Park” in Park District. Here’s our green mission: To adopt environmentally friendly business practices that benefit the environment, educate the community and improve district wide efficiencies. When you see this symbol, look for tips on how to reduce, reuse and recycle at home. Read more about how the Hoffman Estates Park District works to be green at heparks.org. Social Equity

At HEPD, we value the philosophy that our parks and recreation programs are for all people – regardless of the color of their skin, age, income level or ability. It’s important that all people have access to parks, programs and facilities that enrich their lives and add value to the community. Where you see this icon, you’ll see programs, organizations and efforts that demonstrate that value. Health & Wellness

HEPD cares about your families health. HEPD seeks to provide the community with a variety of excellent tools and resources. One way to help an child have access to these resources is to purchase or renew a Park District Youth License Plate for your vehicle! With every license plate purchased or renewed, $25 is contributed to a grant fund to support programming for kids. Natural Area Management Plan

Early in 2010, the HEPD Board of Commissioners formally adopted the district’s first Natural Area Management Plan. We’ve changed the shorelines of our lakes by adding natural plant vegetation, called a natural shoreline. Natural shorelines, as opposed to rock borders or retaining wall shorelines, offer many benefits to the community. Natural shorelines add beauty to the landscape. They help reduce excessive growth of algae by protecting the water quality because they prevent the soil from eroding into the lake. Natural shorelines also keep litter from blowing into the lakes. The plants attract a great variety of wildlife such as birds, butterflies, frogs, turtles, and ducks which use the area for nesting, spawning and protection from predators. In addition, the vegetation deters nuisance species like Canadian geese which litter the lake and surrounding area with droppings. Further, by improving water quality and appearance, increasing wildlife habitat, a natural shoreline may even improve property values. For more information on the Park District’s green initiatives and natural area management, visit heparks.org. Natural Area Management in Action! See the beauty of our natural areas and read the full Natural Area Management Plan at heparks.org.

Anti-Bullying Policy

HEPD cares for the health and well-being of our community and our participants and will not tolerate bullying or harassment of any kind. The Hoffman Estates Park District’s Board of Commissioners has approved a comprehensive AntiBullying Policy to address bullying or harassment, and all forms of aggressive and violent behaviors. “We feel this is an important step to ensure the health and well-being of our community and our participants,” said Dean Bostrom, executive director for the HEPD. “We won’t tolerate bullying or harassment of any kind that might inhibit an individual’s ability to learn and participate.”“Bullying” or “harassment” is defined as any gesture or written, verbal, graphic, or physical act (including cyber bullying via the internet, cell phone, personal digital assistant) that is dehumanizing, intimidating, hostile, humiliating, threatening, or otherwise likely to evoke fear of physical harm or emotional distress. This also includes forms of retaliation against individuals who report or cooperate in an investigation under this policy. All employees and volunteers will be required to complete a training course each year and will be expected to refuse to tolerate bullying and harassment and to demonstrate behaviour that is respectful and civil. Visit heparks.org to read our Anti Bullying Policy. Northwest Special Recreation Association

The Hoffman Estates Park District is proud to be a member of Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA). Throughout the northwest suburbs, NWSRA is the leader in providing outstanding recreational opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. NWSRA’s team of full-time Therapeutic Recreation professionals and trained part-time staff offer a multitude of year-round program offerings including sports, camping, social programs and much more.

Having fun, being included, making friends, learning new things and going new places are just a few of the benefits of NWSRA programs! Inclusion assistance is provided by NWSRA to those individuals who wish to participate in their home Park District program. When registering, the parent of an individual with a disability should inform the park district (and NWSRA, if desired) of any accommodation needed in order for the individual to successfully participate in the program. The Park District staff will then contact NWSRA for assistance with the accommodation. Special Leisure Services Foundation, the fundraising arm of NWSRA, partners with public and private corporations, foundations and individuals to support and promote outstanding recreational opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. Throughout the year, the organization hosts a variety of fundraising events that help support accessible transportation, general programs, inclusion opportunities, the Kevin T.
