“While this piece is obviously referential, I do not think of it (or any of my work) as representational, and certainly not allegorical. I enjoy thinking of my work as being in conversation with history, either real or imagined. I see this particular work in dialogue with the Venus of Willendorf. They have much in common: both are done in stone by hand using simple tools, and they are nearly the exact same size.

I imagine the Venus of Willendorf as talismanic: calling down fertility or companionship, or erotic, maybe a fetish object, or a vehicle of worship of some deity. Our power to simply make a telephone call and get what we want or need parallels this, and our needs or desires are increasingly embodied in these objects (our phones) that are now fetishized themselves and held in places of great importance in our lives.

I intend this object to be read however it may be read. I believe the surface of it, the form, is beautiful and interesting, and that most readings of it will begin there or end there, in the simple visual experience. However deep one wishes to go or not go beneath the surface is fine with me, because I have no way of knowing what another person may bring to their reading of this sculpture. I hope that people will find it amusing or moving or beautiful or absurd, because I find it to be all of these things. It is very gratifying for me to imagine that I am in communication with unknown persons, either in the past or in the future.”
