FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: DAVID CRUZ 201.455.4001 Mayor cancels senior shuttle on Election Day; Occhipinti to provide free service In a shameless attempt to further disenfranchise the 4th ward’s most vulnerable residents, the Zimmer administration announced today that the senior shuttle service would be suspended on Election Day, stranding hundreds of seniors who depend on the shuttle to get to the polls. Independent 4th ward city council candidate Tim Occhipinti announced that his campaign would provide a free shuttle service for any seniors who need it. “This speaks volumes about what the Lenz campaign thinks about the 4th ward’s senior citizens,” said Occhipinti. “The Lenz campaign is saying that if you don’t vote for them, you don’t count. But our senior citizens should be advised: we will be there for you on Election Day.” Occhipinti said his campaign would provide free shuttle service to the polls for all seniors at 400 1st Street, those most affected by the suspension of service. The shuttle will be clearly marked for seniors to see and will operate for the entire day. “It is outrageous to think that any elected official would be a party to these kinds of tactics,” added Occhipinti. “Any seniors who want to vote must be allowed to vote, regardless of whom they support.” Occhipinti decried the desperate last-ditch tactics of the Lenz campaign, which have included pasting Occhipinti stickers on private property and coordinating – along with their enlisted bloggers - the distribution of incendiary flyers. “They have tried to challenge legal votes. They have tried to smear private citizens who support us. They have tried to intimidate our neighbors,” said Occhipinti. “Now they are trying to cut off the transportation service to seniors who they know have rejected their sleazy campaign tactics. It’s all an indication of how desperate they have become. Any opportunity for a dignified election process is now clearly out the window.”
