Déboucher (Uncorking) from Monseigneur le Vin by Louis Forest CHARLES MARTIN (French, 1884/88– 1932/34) • Published by Etablissements Nicolas, Paris Chromolithograph print, 8 1/4 6 in., 1927

IT GOES WITHOUT saying that before drinking, there must be uncorking. As the French wine writer Alexis Lichine said, “There is no substitute for pulling corks.” The removal of the cork augurs an ambrosial aroma, a sip to savor, a festive feast, or perhaps a bibulous banquet.

“DRINK WINE. THIS is life eternal. This is all that youth will give you. It is the season for wine, roses and drunken friends. Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life.” —Omar Khayyám, The Rubáiyát

WHILE YOSHITOSHI MADE many tranquil or haunting ukiyo-e prints, he also made some that are frightening or violent. This one lands somewhere in between—a rowdy party hosted by the police superintendent. This guzzling fellow in his fern-patterned suit should perhaps have remembered the Japanese proverb, “Wine begins with formalities and ends in a riot.”

The Wineglass (detail) JAMES MCNEILL WHISTLER (American, 1834–1903) Etching, 3 3/16 2 3/16 in., 1858 Harris Brisbane Dick Fund, 1917 17.3.22

THE 19TH CENTURY saw an explosion of new printing techniques that led to mass production of images. Some artists, like Whistler, rejected the new methods and participated in a revival of etching, creating prints of breathtaking subtlety. With fine variations in the density and proximity of the hatchmarks, he describes the clarity and limpidity of a wineglass.
