Home, safe home In South Africa, parents are acutely aware of stranger danger, but some of the biggest threats to your children’s safety and wellbeing are in your own home. Catherine Hofmeyr gives tips on childproofing your home.

CHILDPROOF CHECKLIST 1. Remove any potential chokeables. 2. Poisons and medicines should be locked away and stored out of reach. 3. Cover electrical plug outlets. 4. Attach heavy furniture like TVs and bookshelves to the wall. 5. Block access to danger areas like stairs and open windows. 6. Blind cords and curtain ties must hang out of reach of the crib. 7. When cooking, use the back plates of the stove, and turn pot and pan handles inwards where little hands can’t grasp them. 8. Cover pools and never leave children unattended near water. 9. Prevent burns: hide the matches, screen the fire and supervise the braai at all times. 10. Install smoke alarms. 11. Turn down the geyser temperature. 12. Make sure all windows, doors and coffee tables are made of safety glass. 13. Knives, tools and glass objects must be packed away or displayed out of reach. 14. Pad sharp edges of furniture with special corner covers. 15. Be vigilant.

Dust off Granny’s old recipe books, because 2014 is the year to make your own. From pizza, pasta and puff pastry to bottling home-made tomato sauce and whipping up your own cheese, Katelyn Williams explains how easy it is to make these by hand. Pasta
