What kind of saver are you? Do you hide, hoard or hope when it comes to saving? Helen Ueckermann decodes five different saving personalities – and explains how they can affect your financial wellbeing.

You just can’t help yourself. Every spare rand has to be invested so you can reap the benefits of a solid nest egg in a few decades’ time. Don’t recognise yourself? Thought so. You aren’t alone. Most of us desperately want to save, but don’t know how, or believe we just don’t earn enough to make a worthwhile start. It may be we simply lack confidence. The wonderful thing about saving is that just doing it gives confidence, says Candice Paine, Retail Head: Strategic Partners at Sanlam Investments.

“Once you have even a small amount in your bank account, saving becomes a pleasurable and rewarding exercise. Seeing your money grow is equal to safeguarding your future.” Just imagine: when your car breaks down, there are funds in your emergency account; that dream holiday won’t plunge you into debt to be settled long after the fun is forgotten; and the thought of retirement does not fill you with absolute dread. What kind of saver are you? Read the full article in the autumn edition of reality magazine.
