PostSpectacular&Manifesto Research Manifeso & PostSpectacular

A manifesto is a set of statements of intentions or rules that a person or group of people follow; they express a point of view. The manifesto I researched is the PostSpectacular manifesto ‘Rule making & breaking’. PostSpectacular is Karsten Schmidt’s design company, it is based in London, and he set up Postspectacular because he wanted to try something new, and focus on computational design, collaboration, open source and education. Most of the work is based on coding, and are in the format of moving image, or installations, mainly of which are interactive, and the open source of the coding allows other people to use and change the work, for example Decode Recode.

PostSpectacular Manifesto

The rule making and breaking manifesto opening line states ‘the below is a constant state of flux and serves as a rough guide and food for thought for my own creation process’’. This implies that Karsten Schmidt created this manifesto as a reminder for himself, and as a tool to use; as his work is based around open source, he made this public for people to read and to use and refer to their own creative work. I found it interesting that these are a set of rules, and the title implies this, but also it adds making and breaking, so therefore I think that this involves the reader of this is involved more, as they can make their own rules about this, and they can break some rules as well.

Group Presentation

As a group we presented our findings from our research into the PostSpectacular manifesto to the rest of the year, we also had a visual presentation to go along with this as well. I came up with a list of suggestions of topics we should cover in the presentation to ensure that we included all the information that we had gathered in a systematic way, this list was then discussed with the rest of the group, where we each took a section to present. We decided to write the script for the presentation together, and do the visual presentation together as well. I spoke about the rule making and breaking section. After we had presented, I realised that it might have been a lot quicker and easier if we had each taken a part to present and write it ourselves, as this can come across better in presenting because you put more feeling into it when you talk. We took this idea on board for our final presentation.


Collaboration Secondary Research Collaboration

I began by researching collaboration generally. I found seven rules for collaboration by Muneera Spence: ‘‘Look for common ground: find shared values, consider shared personal experiences, pay attention to and give feedback, be yourself and expect the same of others, be willing to accept differences in perception and opinions Learn about others: consider their perspectives and needs, appeal to the highest motives, let others express themselves freely Critique results, not people: do not waste time on personal hostility, make other people feel good, avoid criticism and put downs Give and get respect: show respect for others’ opinions, be considerate and friendly, put yourself in the other person’s shoes, be responsive to emotions, speak with confidence but remain tactful Proceed slowly: present one idea at a time, check for understanding and acceptance of each idea before moving on to the next. Speak in an organized and logical sequence. Be explicit and clear: share your ideas and feelings, pay attention to nonverbal communication, speak clearly and make eye contact, select words that have meaning for your listeners Remember the five “Cs” of communication: clarity, completeness, conciseness, concreteness, and correctness’’. [1]

Role of the Collaborator

The role that I researched was the role of the collaborator. ”strong collaboration involves a constantly changing roster of interchangeable people, and changing mainly at the whim of the participants themselves. For the most part at least, collaborators are not pre-assigned to play special roles in the project. There is just one main role–that of collaborator. And anyone who shows up and fits the requirements (bear in mind that some projects have almost no requirements at all) can play that role. Moreover, to the extent to which work is strongly collaborative, everyone has equal rights over the product. Everyone feels equal ownership and feels equally emboldened to make changes”. [2] In a group we each took a creative area to research about collaboration, I chose film. This was because I knew that it took a lot of people working together to create a film, and they all do a part that they specialise in, and come together and collaborate to get a film completed.

Characteristics of Collaboration

‘‘The Collaborator is the rare person who truly values the team over the individual. In the interest of getting things done, the Collaborator coaxes people out of their work silos to form multidisciplinary teams. In doing so, the person in this role dissolves traditional boundaries within organizations and creates opportunities for team members to assume new roles. More of a coach than a boss, the Collaborator feels their team with the confidence and skills needed to complete the shared journey.’’ [3] This states that the collaborator will ensure that each member of the team is working in the group, and may put them in groups to make them work better, being interested in the how the team will develop with the right people working together. The collaborator will encourage the team to get the job done. To get a clear understanding of the role of the collaborator and collaboration, I put together a mindmap of words to decribe the role.

Collaboration Primary Research Overview

After I carried out secondary research, it was time to put my knowledge to the test and create some tasks to go towards my primary research. As the role we were given was the role of the collaborator, we had to ensure that all group members worked together, to do a collaborative task that allowed us all to take part. These tasks were able to give me a better understanding of the role of the collaborator, and these would go towards generating ideas for our own manifesto, so we had a variety of researched sources, other than information that we had read or talks that we had listened to, we actually turned this into action and worked together. I think it also helped bringing in others from outside our group, to get fresh and new ideas and expand on the ones we already had.

Questions on paper task

The idea was to come up with questions or statements that people could respond to, and write these on A3 paper, and put them around uni for people to add to. My question was: “Doodle here’’ and the others were: “I would like to collaborate with ….because….” “Do you like/dislike Collaboration? And Why?” “Draw an example of collaboration…” “If I could be anything I would be…” I took photos of us putting them up and also of people contributing to the sheets. These received good feedback and so this proved that people were happy to collaborate, however, unfortunately with some discussion about this activity, we decided that it was more participation than collaboration because although we had collaborated on this task, we then put it up for anyone to come along and change, and therefore not knowing the full idea, it would have been more collaboration if everyone had been involved in the process and contributed. However, we still got ideas and we had learnt from this as well, as in understanding what doesn’t count as collaboration, which is also useful.

Interviews

We decided that we would ask other people about collaboration, and get their thoughts, this involved us setting up an interview type setting, whereby we asked selected individuals to answer questions; this allowed us to get other people’s views and opinions which helped us to get a better idea about collaboration, and we also asked about their own experiences, we found out that everyone had done some form of collaborative work, be that professionally or in school or collage. They also had similar views on what makes collaboration good, for example, working together equally and sharing, and giving respect to everyones ideas. I took part in the task by asking questions to many of the interviewees and also being interviewed, so I got both sides of the process. I also set up a camera in the studio where we were doing the interviews to record our process of doing this task, other than just having the video of the interviewee answering questions. It was good to look back at the set as a whole and see and what worked well and where we could have made improvements.


Final Group Manifesto Planning

To plan for the manifesto, as a group we carried out a task, which allowed us to collectively gather characteristics for the role of the collaborator. We wrote these on post it notes and stuck them down, so we could see visually all the ideas coming together. My suggestions: -Teamwork -Co operation -Common goal -Organized -Keep calm and carry on -Learn -Sharing ideas -Communication -Respect -Pay attention These went towards the recipe idea that I came up with. We all then researched into existing recipes to get the language that is used, so we could write our own based on it. We then chose the best ones that we thought described collaboration. The next step was to write the method for the role of the collaborator, using the ingredients that we had come up with. This was quite easy once we got the first few down and could follow on to the next one.

Using Our Manifesto ‘Recipe’

As a group we wrote up our manifesto on a public chalkboard and video recorded us doing it, however, we thought that we should do something with it. So after we had created our manifesto, as it was a recipe, we decided we should make something to represent collaboration. We made cupcakes, and used the real ingredients as a representation for the ingredients for the recipe for collaboration; to do this we used handmade labels. We recorded this process by video recording, and taking photographs. The process of collaboration was highlighted by the fact that as a group we made them, taking turns to do each process to complete the task. The idea was to then give them out at our presentation but this didn’t go according to plan because the cakes didn’t turn out as well as expected, however it was the idea and process that was the important part.
