EQUALITY & DIVERSITY ‘Equality’ means treating all groups of people fairly, providing equality of opportunity and removing barriers to success. It is not about treating everybody the same because different people have different needs. For example, making reasonable adjustments for people with a disability (like providing additional time in exams for students with dyslexia) removes barriers to equality of opportunity and helps prevent discrimination. Increasing our understanding of the needs of different groups of people promotes good relations between people. SUPPORT AVAILABLE AT HLC The College is committed to ensuring that students, staff and visitors are not subject to harassment or discrimination.

Supporting you Making decisions, balancing your life, studying hard – you might need some help along the way. We have an exceptional learner services team to support and guide you throughout your time with us at college, whatever challenges come your way.

4

The College is also able to provide help and support to individual students or groups on all of the nine protected characteristics. If you wish to talk or need help and support, please contact one of the following; your Tutor, Team Leader, Assistant Principal or the College’s Safeguarding Officer. Ali Wells, Safeguarding Coordinator T: 07790 833 601 E: wellsa@hlcollege.ac.uk

EQUALITY – PROTECTED CHARACTERISTICS Equality laws exist to protect the groups of people who have traditionally faced discrimination. These groups of people share ‘equality protected characteristics’ such as: Age Race Disability (including physical, mental and learning impairments) Sex Pregnancy, maternity and breastfeeding Gender identity Marriage or civil partnership status Religion or belief Sexual orientation Everyone has several of these protected characteristics, therefore

everyone is protected by equality legislation from discrimination in education, at work and in other situations. WHAT IS DIVERSITY? ‘Diversity’ refers to individual difference. People are unique and differ from one another in a range of ways. Differences may or may not be visible and may include personal characteristics such as background, culture and personality. We value diversity, which means that we aim to realise the potential of every individual student and staff member. We have developed policies and procedures that aim to meet this commitment. 19+ ADVANCED LEARNER LOANS Advanced Learner Loans provide financial support for those aged 19 years and above to access some advanced (Level 3) and higher (Level 4) further education courses. These loans operate

Supporting you in a similar manner to those available in higher education for tuition costs, and are managed by the Student Loans Company. This means that rather than an individual having to pay for their course upfront they have the option of accessing an advanced student loan. Students can apply from 1st April 2019 for courses starting on or after 1st August 2019. It’s easy to apply, household income isn’t taken into account and there’s no credit check. Students will not have to pay anything back until they finish their course and their income is over £25,000 a year. Further information is available by following the link below: https://www.gov.uk/ advanced-learner-loan/ overview FINANCE FOR UNIVERSITYLEVEL COURSES Whilst many university-level courses are labelled as ‘fulltime’ the attendance can vary greatly, sometimes being only one day a week in college or university. Detailed course and finance information is available at www.hlcollege. ac.uk or in the UniversityLevel Course Guide. We strongly recommend that you

refer to the most up-to-date information on our website so you can make an informed decision. CAN I PAY BY INSTALMENTS? You can pay by instalments on certain high cost courses. We regret that we are unable to offer this facility on courses where the total cost payable is less than £200. The instalment plan consists of two simple steps: 1) 25% deposit at enrolment 2) Followed by three equal monthly payments by direct debit commencing at an agreed start date Alternative payment options include bank transfer, credit/ debit card, cash, cheque or online via our website. Account facilities are available to employers, provided that written evidence is produced in advance of the student’s enrolment, indicating that the employer is willing to pay fees on the student’s behalf. WHAT HAPPENS IF I NEED A REFUND? Classes need to be viable in order to run. If there are not enough students, a full

refund will be paid. Refunds for any other reason are only granted in exceptional circumstances at the discretion of the College. WHAT FEES WILL APPLY IF I AM A STUDENT FROM OVERSEAS (NON-EU)? HLC welcomes students from overseas and we’re sure that you will find HLC an ideal place to study. HLC has attracted students from all over the world. Fees for students who are from overseas are applied at a different rate from those indicated in this guide. For information regarding course fees, when applying as an overseas student (this includes those who have not lived in the EU for more than three years), please contact: Admissions Team T: 0800 032 1986 E: enquiries@hlcollege.ac.uk

• Classes may be cancelled if numbers fall below the minimum required • HLC reserves the right to alter or cancel courses or parts of courses for whatever reason, without prior notice • The Principal’s decision is final as to whether or not a student may be enrolled for any particular class or course Further details of HLC regulations are available from reception at the Hereford Campus. PLEASE NOTE All fee policies and concessions are correct at the time of printing; changes in government policy may mean that arrangements could differ when enrolment takes place from August 2019 onwards. Students should make enquiries to establish the current position prior to enrolment.

RULES AND REGULATIONS • Classes will not be formed unless enough students enrol to make them viable

HOW LONG IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? The minimum length of an apprenticeship is 12 months, but some apprenticeships will be designed to last two, three or four years. COLLEGE ATTENDANCE You may be required to attend college or other off-the-job training in order to gain certain skills and undertake certain assessments. This can be day release or block release, depending on the apprenticeship.

According to the National Apprenticeship Service,

65%

of apprentices stay working with the company that trained them.

How to apply & find an employer So you’ve chosen an industry and you think an apprenticeship might be for you. What next? You need an employer and there are a few ways to get one: 1. Approach them directly - you can contact an employer to see if they would like to take you on as an apprentice. They might not know that they need an apprentice until you contact them! Remember that you are hoping that they will take you on as an employee, so act professionally and make a good impression. If you can, find out a bit about the company first by visiting their website and preparing what you want to say. Remember there are other attributes that employers value, such as: • Enthusiasm • Willingness to learn • Reliability • Punctuality • Responsibility • Working as part of a team • Good sense of humour • Working on your own initiative 2. Call the College - many businesses contact HLC to find them an apprentice that would be suited to them, so there might be just the right job for you.

Get in touch on 0800 032 1986 and we can advise you on the next steps like sending us your CV and possible interviews. 3. Look for adverts - some companies advertise apprenticeship vacancies and they are looking for people like you to join their business. This could be in local press, national press, at job fairs, through recruitment agencies or online through sites such as: The College shows some vacancies online in its apprenticeship section www.hlcollege.ac.uk The Government’s job search site www.gov.uk/jobsearch The Apprenticeship Guide www.apprenticeshipguide.co.uk The National Apprenticeship Service www.apprenticeships.org.uk 4. Current employer - if you already have a job your employer might consider taking you on as an apprentice. If they need to find out more, direct them to the National Apprenticeship Service website for more information.

Ho w t o fi n d u s FINDING HEREFORDSHIRE & LUDLOW COLLEGE HLC has two campuses in Herefordshire: the Hereford Campus is situated above the city centre to the northeast and the Holme Lacy Campus is in a rural setting about 6 miles south-east of Hereford city centre.

HEREFORD CAMPUS - HR1 1LS This campus is just to the north-east of the city centre, conveniently close to both the train station and the central bus terminal and is served well by the regular public transport system. If you travel by car please note that a parking permit system operates on campus; full details are available from reception or on our website. The Campus was completely transformed in 2010 following a ÂŁ32 million development. If you would like to visit before you apply then see the details of our Open Events on page 3.

HOLME LACY CAMPUS - HR2 6LL This campus is located at the western edge of the village of Holme Lacy, approximately 4 miles to the south-east of Hereford on the B4399. A bus service operates from Hereford city centre although it is advisable to check times on the Herefordshire Council website. The campus is set above the River Wye in our 257 hectares estate which encompasses a mixed organic working farm, ancient and commercial woodlands and traditional parkland with ponds and streams. It also includes specialist learning facilities and the much acclaimed Straw Bale CafĂŠ development which has been the centre of focus for its sustainable credentials. If you would like to visit before you apply then see the details for our Open Events on page 3.
