hether you want to slow it down or ramp it up, either pace suits Rossland. That’s the diversity of the Kootenay lifestyle -- it’s like one ‘place’ fits all. Rossland’s reputation at first blush is that of a four-season recreational Shangri-La. Spring, summer and fall serve up world-class mountain biking, hiking, and golfing. There’s a healthy glow in people’s cheeks as they stride down the revamped downtown core. The sidewalks are vibrant with browsers and shoppers and the sound of patio chairs sliding out from under tables as people gather to fuel up or wind down. Rossland’s wintertime legend as a big mountain experience with a genuine, smalltown vibe continues to spread. Red represents the very heart and soul of skiing in Western Canada. It boasts the first Canadian Ski Championships and the first lift in Western Canada. The famous * Photo Francois Marseille

Rossland
Facts
Incorporated in 1897
Founded by Ross Thompson – hence “Ross”land. Rossland is situated within an extinct volcano. At an elevation of 1023m, it is one of Canada’s highest cities. By 1887 Rossland had a population of 7,000 with 42 saloons, 4 banks and 17 law firms. The Centre Star, War Eagle and Le Roi mines produced 96% of Rossland’s one and a half million tons of ore by 1903. In 1929, after forty exciting years of mining gold, and a combined output worth almost 165 million dollars, the treasure vault on Red Mountain was closed. Olaus Jeldness was inducted into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame in 1988.
Olympic gold-medal skiers Nancy Greene and Kerrin Lee-Gartner both earned their chops on the slopes of Red. Today, Red Mountain Resort — a mere 5-minute hop from downtown and actually within city limits — continues to pile up the awards. In the last couple years: #8 on the New York Times top 10 places in the world (not just ski areas, but places in general!) #1 ski town in Powder Magazine’s Ski Town Throw-down, and #1 most underrated resort. Last year, the Most Improved North American Resort and Best Upcoming Resort in the 2014 World Snow Awards. Check out page 11 for a few more. Downhill skiing is only part of our winter life. Just beyond the ski lifts, there’s cat skiing, back country touring, world-class cross-country skiing, and as many miles of snowshoeing in the winter as there are mountain biking trails in the summer. It’s all here. But Rossland is so much more than just a place to play. There’s a vibrant arts and music scene that seems to grow *
Voted as Canada’s #1 outdoor town by Explore Magazine, Rossland is widely renowned for its rugged outdoor adventure, small-town warmth and hospitality. Visit the Rossland Museum for the complete story on the area, or pick up a copy of the Historical Heritage Walking Tour brochure, avail-

stronger every year. Catch a concert at the historic Miners’ Union Hall, built in 1898; our arts council brings in amazing talent for a town this size. And the Gold Fever Follies runs a lively summer stock theatre show that reflects Rossland’s rich mining history. Watch can-can dancers whoop it up like they did when the gold was flowing in the early 1900s. If it’s shopping or browsing through art galleries you’re after, you’ll find Rossland’s pretty and compact downtown a refreshing departure from the usual freeway strip malls. Our downtown core — all four blocks of it — is a postcard of local art galleries, boutiques, cafes and specialty retail shops. Sorry, no big box stores or chain outlets. Not here. Of all the different experiences you can enjoy here, it’s the people that visitors tend to talk about the most... people like Jenny Baillie. Each summer, Jenny and a group of her fellow Kootenay artists get together in the mountains for a week of painting, hiking and kinship. They take what would normally be a solitary pursuit of their art and turn it into a great excuse for getting together to share their passion for painting and love of the mountains. That’s pure Kootenay style. Then there are the wolf packs of renegade trail builders like Ryan Kuhn and his pals who lug chainsaws and hoe-dads into the surrounding mountains to build new mountain bike trails. No pay, thanks, it’s just for kicks. That’s Rossland — pay it forward by creating some fun that everyone can enjoy. Or how about the gang of ex-RedMountain employees who are still driven enough by kinship and community spirit to host dances and community socials some 20 years after they cashed-in their last paycheque from Red. This group arranged to *

In the winter
of 1899-1900, when Canadian women were subjected to Victorian era pressures to present themselves as prim, proper and feminine, …the women of Rossland started up the town’s first women’s hockey team. In fact, they had enough women hockey players for two teams. In a time when women were not even in the Olympics yet, Rossland held the 1900 Rossland Winter Carnival Ladies’ Hockey Championships of BC. Wearing the Victorian requisite long dress uniform to ensure they didn’t show too much leg (but hey at least they didn’t have to wear a corset on the ice...), the Rossland Ladies Hockey team won the first championship against Nelson, 4-0. The 6 days a week of team practise paid off. Of the winter 1911-1912 team, the local Daily News reported, “Madge Keating… handled stick and puck as if she had been playing hockey with a senior men’s club for 10 years.” In 1911, Rossland Winter Carnival held the “Ladies Championship of the World,” and the Rossland Ladies Hockey Team won. For Winter Carnival 1913, it was held again… and they won that one too. They received gold lockets as prizes instead of medals. 1916, the Rossland Women hockey team won the “Ladies Championship of the World” yet again…but they don’t win the right to vote in federal elections until 1918. The culture of strong, trailblazing Rossland women goes back even further than our federal right to vote! raise a statue in honour of Rossland’s original ski bum, Olaus Jeldness. They sold raffle tickets, organized fund-raising dances, and begged for sponsorship support. Two years ago, the larger-than-life bronze was raised in tribute to this very special character who embodies the Spirit of Red. Jeldness was a Norwegian miner who was drawn to Rossland in 1897 as word spread around the world of the rich gold strikes on Red Mountain. Jeldness was also a great promoter of skiing and, as it turns out, a great guy for organizing a party. He organized the first Rossland Winter Carnival in 1898 that included Canada’s first ski championship --which he won handily, of course. He also organized a less formal, but equally famous, ski race that became known as the “Tea Party.” There were bottles of liquid courage buried in the snow on the uptrack on Red Mountain while the skiing on the way back down was splattered with garage-sale crashes. *

oday, the Rossland Winter Carnival is as wacky as ever. Picture this: teams of four, dressed in all manner of ridiculous get-ups and colourful wigs, rocketing down the streets of Rossland on homemade bobsleds at 80 kph. Indeed, the spirit of Olaus is alive and well today. Today, the 3,500 people who call Rossland home are an eclectic, live-and-let-play mix of people. Blue collar smelter workers live next to orthopedic surgeons who live next to ski bums. A growing number of ‘nomadic entrepreneurs’ — self-employed freelancers — are trading time spent commuting to work in the big city for taking a couple runs down Red or sneaking a quick outing on a nearby trail. Call it the “Rossland coffee break.” So let’s run Rossland’s checklist one more time: world-class four-season recreation, no crowds, quaint small-town charm, a diverse, balanced sense of lifestyle, and low cost of living. ED Mountain is the last great, unspoiled resort. Located right above Rossland, along BC’s famous “Powder Highway,” RED delivers 4,200 acres of pristine skiing unfettered by overdevelopment. Foot-for-vertical-foot, it’s one of the best powder experiences you can get without hiring a helicopter. With 300 inches/7.6m of annual snowfall, wideopen groomers, epic vertical (2,919ft/890m!), inbounds cat-skiing, 360-degree descents off select peaks, a rich tradition, and -- phew! -- the BEST tree runs in BC, it’s no wonder The NY Times voted us their #8 “Best Place in the World to Visit in 2013.” (Yeah: the World!) Other recent accolades include #1 in Powder’s Ski Town Throwdown, Most Underrated Resort from Skiing, and Canada’s Hottest Ski Resort, 2014, from The Telegraph (UK). Why? Well, around here we pride ourselves on fresh turns that you don’t have to fight for… And that Kootenay powder is just as fine as it was 111 years ago when our hill attracted its first hungry skiers in their leather boots. In the last two years, RED has also added nearly 1,000 acres of mostly-intermediate terrain on Grey Mountain, an entirely new peak. This 2013 expansion was described as “staggering” by USA Today. Meet Butch Boutry Surrounded by beautiful mountain vistas and living within city limits of the best ski hill in North America, it’s only natural that the ski world’s best will either start out here or end up here. An example of one of Rossland’s favourite local ski celebrities who both started out and ended up here, is Butch Boutry of Rossland’s longest standing business, Butch Boutry Ski Shop. Among Butch’s many ski career milestones: • 1954-64 Red Mountain Ski Team member • 1959-63 Canadian National Ski Team member • 1963 winner of the Western Canadian Men’s Ski Championships. • Veterans Champion three years in a row • 1973-76, Butch coached the Canadian National Ski Team • 15 years as Head Coach of the National Disabled Ski Team. He coached the Disabled National Ski Team at 7 Olympics • 1988, Butch took the World’s Disabled Ski Team to the Calgary Olympics as a demonstration sport • Coached the Red Mountain Racers for 2 years and many Summer Ski Camps including Oregon International Summer Racing Camp and the Kokanee Summer Camp. Butch also taught at Mount Tremblant • Course director for Canadian Ski Coaches Federation for four years. Butch is a level 4 coach and has a life-time membership to this organization • Western Program Director for the Canadian Ski Association and is responsible for coaches, courses and clinics for the National Ski Team in Western Canada • 2002, Butch was entered into the Canadian Ski Coaches Hall of Fame. Butch Boutry Ski Shop, a throwback to the days when ski shops were devoted to skis and all employees were longstanding technical experts, is where he and his wife Enza now spend their winters. Butch Boutry Ski Shop is in its original location, run by its original owners, since 1976. Over the 39 years the ski shop has been in operation, they have had a total of only 5 employees! This longevity and lack of employee turnover are great indications as to just how seriously Butch and Enza take the business of equip-

Our inspiring slopes and deep ski culture have a long history of breeding world class athletes. Check out the Wall of Fame in Rafters and you’ll get the picture. Olympic gold medalists Nancy Greene and Kerrin Lee-Gartner highlight the ranks of the many national team skiers who’ve earned their stripes here. Dane Tudor, Colston VB, Simon Hillis, Ian Lockey, and Kimberly Joines are all RED locals and the list goes on and on. But don’t worry: you don’t have to be as talented as these athletes to enjoy RED’s bounty. Aside from all that, RED boasts fantastic cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, and après action galore. Our new craft beer festival, Beer Goggles, is quickly gaining a reputation as a “must” while the Skullcandy Music Series in Rafters, “North America’s Best Ski Area Bar” according to Powder Magazine (and us…), means international bands in an intimate venue. Modern ski in/ out lodging, fine dining, a professional ski school, guiding, high-performance rentals, day care steps away from gourmet espresso, and a free shuttle to Rossland round out our offerings. Throw in our legendarily friendly locals, and it’s clear that RED Mountain Resort is the full vacation package: everything you need. Nothing you don’t. The only fluff we offer is our snow! v 14

Keep the Round Side Down OUNTAIN BIKING
has become as much a way of life around here in summer as skiing is in winter. Long before the ski lifts stop turning, the shovels come out to clear the snow off a trail on the south end of town appropriately known as Spring Cleaning. In Rossland, summer activities start before the winter ones have finished. The network of trails that radiate out of Rossland’s town centre have been built and maintained by a variety of people networks. We have a local trails society that is constantly building, signing and maintaining trails. Unofficially, local chainsaw gangs are always working on some new pet project trail, or constructing another bridge, or skinny, or launch pad. Word spreads like wildfire, and new trails like Larch Ridge or SuperMegaDeath (which is anything but) suddenly become the talk of the town. If you’re just earning your mountain biking chops (or feeling lazy), take a flat cruise on the old rail grade. On the other end of the scale, tackle the Seven Summits — a 30-km International Mountain Bike Association “epic” where a solid bike, solid legs, good bike skills and extra water are a must. The Kootenay Columbia Trail Society’s extensive trail network spans 170 km, including Rossland’s “urban trails” that thread through town. The Seven Summits trail was awarded the 2007 “Trail of the Year” by Bike Magazine. Seven Summits, one of only 36 IMBA “Epic” rated trails, is a 30.4 km ridge ride that passes within a half hour ascent of seven major peaks in the Rossland area. Rossland has hosted several mountain biking races, including the Rossland Fat Tire Festival, the Rubberhead, and a Noram.

But what about.................... road riding? THERE IS A GROWING cadre of thin-tired road-toad cognoscenti who will tell you that the road riding out of Rossland rivals the quality of mountain biking. Routes directly out of Rossland are in the advanced or difficult category so you’ll need strong legs. But head down to the Columbia River valley — either 10 km down the hill to Trail, or 20 km across the line to Northport, Washington — and you’ll find a wonderful mix of rolling terrain, sparse traffic and stunning views. There’s enough riding to keep the most adventurous rider happy. Here are just a few of our favourite rides: Seven Mile Dam/Waneta Highway: (Moderate: 40-60 km) You can adjust your starting point to make this ride longer or shorter, but be sure to include the flat and scenic warm-up down the Waneta highway. Then turn up the Seven Mile dam road with its stiff but short (3 km) climb to the Pend Oreille River valley. This quiet back road is the perfect place to practice pace-lining or to spin easy and simply take in the views.

Nancy Greene Lake: (Moderate-Difficult: 30 km) Head north out of Rossland up Highway 3B and start climbing up and over Strawberry Pass (1,600 m) and then down to the refreshing waters of Nancy’s namesake. The inclines aren’t too steep and the road offers a couple of flat reprieves. This out and back is a great ride on a hot day. Rossland/Northport loop: (Difficult: 63 km) Don’t forget your passport! Start off by rocketing down the 7 to 10 per cent grade into Trail and then roll downstream along the mighty Columbia River, crossing the border into the U.S. and down a sleepy backroad to the small town of Northport. Enjoy the river views and make a game of counting the traffic (usually on one hand.) At Northport, grab an espresso and start the rewarding grind back up to Rossland — 25 kms of steady climbing. v

The annual Rossland Mountain Film Festival, held in November, showcases local filmmakers and any other quality expression of mountain culture on film, as well as workshops, famous guest speakers, and fantastic live musical entertainment. On the stage, you can take in summer stock theatre with a historical twist at the Gold Fever Follies. The live musical theatre group has been performing in the restored 1898 Miners’ Hall during July and August since 1987. This lively show brings to life stories from Rossland’s rich gold mining history. Great for the whole family! Or you can catch the production that the Rossland Light Opera Players, British Columbia’s oldest amateur musical theatre group, stages each winter. The Rossland Council for Arts and Culture is Rossland’s pipeline for local culture vultures. Live music and theatre make up their Performance Series, all of which make the Miners’ Hall the go-to place throughout the year. And on the third Sunday of every winter month you can take in the Joe Hill Coffee house, where local talent each get their ten minutes at the mic. The impressive acts range from local rock stars to the Boomtown Garter Girls, whose can-can dance has been going strong for over 30 years. The beautiful new Rossland Art Gallery in the old Bank of Montreal building is now home to rotating art exhibitions, ranging from sculpture to painting to fabric to graffiti art. And in the summer, the Rossland Mountain Market creates a Thursday streetscape of live music, artists and artisans, fresh local produce and yummy treats.v
ROSSLAND VACATION GUIDE 2015 ~ WWW.ROSSLAND.COM
As any great turn of the 19th-century gold-mining boomtown would have, Rossland has a very story-filled past. As one of the many initiatives taking place to ensure we never lose touch with this fascinating history, in 2009, Rossland City Council created the Heritage Commission. The Heritage Commission is made up of a group of knowledgeable local volunteers working with the City of Rossland to ensure conservation of our heritage landmarks and associated history. But Rossland doesn’t just focus on the past. In 2009, Rossland City Council also created the Sustainability Commission to focus on our future. The Sustainability commission is made up of Rossland citizens working with the City of Rossland to facilitate the implementation of the Strategic Sustainability Plan. This is a unique document specifically created by Rosslanders and City Hall to describe the desired vision of Rossland through to 2030, and set out the goals to get there. There are many unique and progressive initiatives in Rossland such as these, with Rosslanders concerting their efforts and energy into strengthening the stability of the lifestyle in their beloved town. In a time when rural areas are struggling to uphold their presence and identity, Rossland shows exemplary balance Photo Rossland Museum
of focus between honouring its fascinating history and heritage and creating a progressive future. More information on the Heritage Commission and Sustainability Commission can be found on the City’s website www.rossland.ca and www.visiontoaction.ca

Rossland Beer
is the best in flavourful fresh local beer. Quench your thirst on handcrafted artisanal beer from small brewing batches drawn off the taps in growler-fulls, ready to take away… or let them pour a pint on site for you to sip as you saddle up to the bar and talk politics and passions with Petri Raito and Ryan Arnaud. These childhood friends from Winnipeg made their way west over the years, in search of powder and possibility, and landed smack in the middle of Rossland, just off the main drag, building and brewing our first locally made beer in a really long time. Rossland was ready and waiting for these two guys to roll up their socks and bring some of that salt-of-the-earth prairie-boy ethic to small business brewing in BC. Their flagship brand, Paydirt Pale Ale, a wonderful mix of fruit and hops complexity on the tongue, or their lovely smooth-in-the-mouth creamy, mellow-nut Helter Smelter Amber Ale, can be taken home in growlers and bottles and kegs most days, but their excitingly experimental lineup of revolving flavours might mean you make it home with one of these instead. Sample a taste of what fresh batch they’ve got on hand and you’ll be surprised at which one is your favourite. The entrepreneurial spirit, patience, hard work and elbow grease of Ryan and Petri that went into creating the Rossland Beer Company prove to be a perfect match for a thirsty, active town like Rossland. Amazing what a lifetime of beer loving can do for two guys and a ski town…. The Rossland Beer Company is winner of the prestigious British Columbia Beer Awards 2014: 3rd place in North American Ales for their flagship beer, “Paydirt Pale Ale” and Gold in 2014 Best of Business Awards by Kootenay Business for their business category.

InVESTING & RELOCATING Living the Dream FUNNY THING
happens in Rossland — people come to visit, then never leave! More and more “nomadic entrepreneurs” try Rossland’s skiing, or drive through on their way to somewhere else, but end up transplanting their lives and businesses to Rossland, drawn by the affordability and the quality of life. Meet Jim Firstbrook. Jim has climbed many mountains, both literally and in business. His love of the outdoors led him to guiding, outdoor instruction and seasonal stints as a tree planter, while his engineering physics degree led him to managing software development teams with various companies. But life in the mountains was always front of mind and so Jim made the move to Rossland. “There weren’t any software development jobs for me in this area when I first moved here in
2007,” says Jim. “And then I came across an idea that was a good fit for me, a start-up that I knew we could develop from a home base in Rossland.” His company is Thoughtexchange — an online stakeholder engagement solution. Between skiing in winter and mountain biking in the summer months, Jim worked hard to develop the company and get it up and running. “Our early investors naturally assumed we’d set up an office in Vancouver,” says Jim, “but we’re doing just fine working out of our Rossland and home offices.” “What I love about Rossland is the easy access to great recreation. I can ski from my back yard, drive five minutes and be at a world class ski resort, or drive 10 minutes and be in excellent back country skiing. And the mountain biking — which is equally fantastic

— is just as close. “And it’s a totally cool little town with friendly people, great shops and a thriving vibe of likeminded people. No reasons I can think of to be anywhere else.” If you’re thinking of transforming your life, make your first stop in Rossland at the Rossland Chamber of Commerce. They can help you with information about the community and starting up a business in our area. Members of the Rossland Chamber have access to a business service centre conveniently located downtown. Promotion, advocacy and a connection to the community are just some of the benefits of membership. The Chamber welcomes you to drop by for any information or assistance.
