Merge Chapters Using Word's Master Document feature

Step 1

Insert citation For each chapter, Insert

Step 2

the citations from Endnote.

Unformat the bibliography of each chapter From the Endnote

X3 tab, select > Convert Citations and Bibliography > Convert to Unformatted Citations

The in-text citations will be changed to unformatted citations in curly brackets.

Step 3

Close all chapters

Save and close all the Word documents. Step 4

Create the master document Open a new

Word document.

This is the master document.

Merge chapters (a)

Go to the View tab > Document Views group. Select Outline.

Go to the Outlining tab. Click Show

Document.

Click Insert and then select Chapter 1.

(d)

Repeat step (e) till all chapters have been added to the master document.

Format the bibliography Go to the Endnote

X3 tab > Bibliography group. Click Update Citations and Bibliography.

Unlink with individual chapters

(a)

Go to the View tab > Document Views group. Click Outline.

(b)

Go to the Outlining tab > Master Document group. Click Show

(c)

Place your cursor anywhere in the first chapter.

Document

Then click Unlink.

This will remove the link with the chapter documents. The lock icon will disappear.

Remove field codes

(a)

Go to the View tab > Document Views group. Click

Save a backup for the current master document

(c)

From the Endnote

Print Layout.

X3 tab, select > Convert Citations and Bibliography > Convert to Plain Text

What If… … the font style (font type and size) of the reference list does not conform to the overall format? 1. Highlight the reference list. 2. Go to the Home tab > Styles group. Click Normal.
