Six Steps to Success Graduation is a special moment – a time to celebrate achievements, and also a time of some consternation as to what the future may hold. For today’s graduates, the world is more uncertain than ever due to the speed with which technology is changing the world, bringing advances including big data, artificial intelligence and robotics. Many jobs of the future do not even exist yet, so how can today’s graduates be best prepared for them?

Those points were highlighted by Ms. Louisa CHEANG, an alumna of The University of Hong Kong (HKU), and the only female CEO among Hong Kong’s blue-chip companies, who delivered the keynote address at the 200th Congregation of the Faculty of Business and Economics (the Faculty or FBE) held on 12 November 2018. Ms. Cheang had some excellent practical suggestions to offer graduates as they face a future that is largely unknowable. ‘The journey ahead will be different for each and every one of you’, she said. ‘Furthermore, the environment in which you will be making career and other life choices is evolving at an exponential pace’. She suggested six strategies to navigate the continually shifting landscape. Climb Without a Ladder Career progression today is like rock climbing, she said. You might need to move sideways or even down to achieve your goals. Develop creativity, foresight, flexibility and adaptability to deal with unexpected shifts, and resilience and strong problem-solving skills to overcome challenges and setbacks.

Instead of being stuck behind the people in front, the upside is greater freedom to chart a unique course of your own. Think Like an Entrepreneur That means creating opportunities instead of waiting for them to appear, identifying and solving problems, taking informed risks, and treating failure as a learning opportunity. Speak the Language of Technology Demand is rising for faster communication, streamlined processes and more convenient services. Graduates can keep their technical skills updated by following the news, communicating w i t h c o l l e a g u e s a n d j o i n i n g p ro fe s s i o n a l associations and forums, but without becoming a slave to technology. ‘Technology is a tool for making you more effective and more valuable in your job’, she said.

‘Interacting with a diverse group of individuals will feed your creativity and generate new opportunities’ Never Stop Learning ‘It is no longer possible or wise to assume that what you know today will be sufficient to tackle tomorrow’s challenges’, advised Ms. Cheang. Instead, nurture a learning mind-set that encourages experimentation.   Stay Agile and Develop Resilience The days of a job for life are over and businesses today place more emphasis on resilience, adaptability, problem-solving abilities and creative thinking. Keep an open mind and learn from others, especially leadership and communication skills. Build a Strong Network and Connections ‘Interacting with a diverse group of individuals will feed your creativity and generate new opportunities’, she advised, adding that people perform better when they feel connected to family, friends, colleagues and the wider society. Ms. Cheang ended with a final, inspiring thought. ‘An established career ladder might provide a steady and secure route, but using your creativity, instincts and unique talents to freestyle a route to a new height is a lot more exciting. Life is an adventure. Never stop exploring’.

Miss Ven SZE proposes a vote of thanks on behalf of the graduating class of 2018.

Award-winning Faculty Members The outstanding work of two faculty members was recognised with awards presented at the Congregation on 12 November 2018. We congratulate both members, whose work highlights, respectively, the importance of financial education and the value of great feedback. Not-so-lucky Money Many stock market investors make their trades with the same mind set as gamblers. That’s good for the market, as it means more trades and more money spent, but it leads to far lower returns for investors. The finding was the work of FBE’s Professor Tse-Chun LIN, who won the Outstanding Researcher Award 2017-18. Up to ten per cent of investors treat their trades as a form of gambling, he found, based on a study of the Taiwan Stock Exchange and the theory that on days when big lottery jackpots were on offer, these traders would buy fewer stocks, as they would substitute one form of gambling for another. ‘Our results showed that large lottery jackpots significantly reduce individual trade volume among stocks that are favoured by retail investors’, he explained. ‘On days when the lottery has large jackpots (in excess of NT$500 million, or US$15 million), stock trading falls in general’.

Finance Professor Tse-Chun LIN wins Outstanding Researcher Award 2017-18.

On those days, trades of stocks typically favoured by institutional investors, such as mutual funds, are not affected, while smaller stocks with more lottery-like features often favoured by retail investors tend to underperform, resulting in lower returns. Professor Lin said that his work shows that financial education would be much more effective if it was based on a better understanding of retail trading behaviour. That could help to encourage investors to trade more rationally and reduce the impact of social problems caused by trading losses. Better education would also benefit the industry, as institutions could reduce the number of disputes if they could better manage excessive risk-taking.

Giving Back Feedback is a valuable component of education that if done well can lead to better performance and higher confidence levels in students, believes Dr. Olivia LEUNG, Principal Lecturer in Accounting and Assistant Dean (Undergraduate) at FBE. ‘If feedback is constructively formulated and positively delivered, it will significantly increase students’ confidence and motivation, leading to higher achievement’, she said. Dr. Leung was awarded the Teaching Feedback Award 2017, a student-led award that recognises teachers who have provided excellent feedback to students.

Dr. Olivia LEUNG always gives constructive feedback to her students.

She expressed her gratitude at receiving the award, which she called ‘a form of feedback provided to me by my students in return for the feedback I have given to them during lecture activities, presentations, case competition training, academic advising, and postinterview or post-event reflections’. She said feedback should be constructive, be based on demonstrable examples, and be delivered in an appropriate way. Demonstration, for example, enhances learning. When Dr. Leung wants her students to link their analysis in a case study with outcomes, she first shows them how to build these links using a similar study. ‘Therefore, students receiving my suggestion know exactly what to do now to make their solutions more convincing’, she explained. Feedback can be delivered in public, in small groups or in private, and Dr. Leung listens closely to her students to identify the most effective delivery method in each case. ‘By listening, I can quickly refine my feedback delivery method and style, and revise my comments to make them more feasible for students to act upon’, she said. 8

20th Anniversary of HKU-Fudan IMBA: Be Together, Be Better! 2018 marked the 20th anniversary of the Master of Business Administration (International) Programme (IMBA). A series of events were organised in Shanghai and Hong Kong, gathering faculty members, students and alumni to share their fond memories of the past two decades and to envision a brighter future together.

Launched in 1998, the IMBA programme was the Faculty’s first education venture outside Hong Kong in collaboration with the School of Management of Fudan University. It was also among the first batch of joint programmes to be approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in China. The Tale of Two Cities 'IMBA Programme firmly adheres to the spirits of HKU and Fudan University – two centuryold world-leading institutions – and fully reflects the characteristics of Hong Kong and Shanghai, two international financial centres', HKU ViceChancellor Professor Xiang ZHANG remarked at the 20th Anniversary Celebration Ceremony in Shanghai on 21 October 2018. 'The programme plays an important role in facilitating China’s integration into the world economy: it has successfully nurtured over 4,700 business talents with international perspectives, met the growing demand of professionals while China’s undergoing economic reform, and set up a new model of MBA education in China'. 10

Themed as "The Tale of Two Cities", the celebration ceremony and forum was attended by around 500 business leaders, academics, and alumni. Group Chairman and CEO of Nan Fung Group Mr. Antony LEUNG was the keynote speaker at the forum. In his speech, Mr. Leung said, ‘20 years ago, I had the pleasure to attend the inauguration ceremony of IMBA, and 10 years ago, I came for the 10th anniversary. Today, it gives me great delight to join you again to celebrate the 20th anniversary of such a distinguished programme, and to witness the achievements it has made’. Regarding the future development of Hong Kong and Shanghai, Mr. Leung said that rather than a tale of two cities, China is now creating a tale of two bay areas: the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and the other one comprising eastern cities like Shanghai and Hangzhou. ‘These two bay areas are similar in size, population and GDP. Instead of competing with each other, they should cooperate’, he said.

The US and China: A Rocky Road Ahead For the last 70 years, the US has been the predominant power in the Asia Pacific, but that order is now changing. Many people believe that the fast-paced rise of China and the Trump presidency in the US are the two key factors to a changing world order whose ultimate outcome is as yet unclear.

Professor CHAN Heng Chee (7th from left), Professor Edward CHEN (7th from right), Dean Professor Hongbin CAI (1st from right), Ms. Tara JOSEPH (6th from left), Honourable Jeffrey LAM Kin-fung (6th from right), Professor CHAN Ka-keung (5th from right), Professor Frederick MA (3rd from right) and other distinguished guests take a group photo.

That is also the view of Professor CHAN Heng Chee, who says that tension between the two powers is rising. She quoted former US Secretary of the Treasury Hank PAULSON who has said that since late 2017, the US sees China ‘not just as a strategic challenge to the US, but also as a country whose rise has come at America’s expense’. What impact will this rivalry have on the rest of the world, and in particular the Asia Pacific region? These were questions addressed by Professor Chan in the Edward KY Chen Distinguished Lecture Series 2018, which was presented by the Faculty on 19 November 2018, and in a panel discussion that followed the lecture.

12

Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). Both were largely welcomed by ASEAN members because they provide options for some countries that have no other access to finance and development. However, others say that China is creating indebtedness. In 2017, President Xi outlined plans for China to be a global leader in innovation by 2035 and a global leader by 2050, a speech widely understood by US leaders as a worrying signal of China’s ambition.

Professor Chan, who is Chairman of Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities, Singapore University of Technology and Design as well as Ambassadorat-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore, addressed the topic of ‘The United States and Asia: The New Geo-politics and Geo-economics’.

The Trump Factor President Donald TRUMP’s focus on America First and his rejection of globalism have effectively ended 70 years of US foreign policy and its support of the liberal international order. Trump has pulled out of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP), the Paris Agreement and the UN Human Rights Council. He aims to rebalance trading relationships in America’s favour through aggressive bilateralism.

The Rise of China China has risen in terms of economic power, political influence and military power. President XI Jinping introduced two important strategies: Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Asian

Trump’s current focus is the trade deficit with China. He imposed tariffs on US$250 billion of China exports, and China retaliated with tariffs on US$60 billion of US exports to China.

F E AT URE China 2025 The ‘Made in China 2025’ project is the root of the discord. Americans believe that China is unfairly reworking technology developed by American firms, making China a real challenger to US dominance. New Geo-political Order? The upheaval in US-China relations is encouraging realignments. Some countries are forming their own coalitions to counter China’s rise. Japan took the lead in the TPP and created the ‘Indo-Pacific’, comprising India, Japan, Australia and the US, aimed at countering the influence of BRI. ‘What is striking to note is that in the new geopolitics, realignments are taking place and some groupings are beginning to be formed without the US’, said Professor Chan. ‘Countries are beginning to see the US as not an inevitable or necessary player in international initiatives, and the US no longer sees itself as an indispensable power’. For example, the nuclear deal with Iran has been upheld despite the departure of the US. The US-China conflict could lead to a multi-polar world where small and mid-size countries gain power as both powers compete to influence them. Countries affected by BRI have seen China prepared to renegotiate with them, and the relocation of supply chains from China to other countries brings new opportunities. ‘We see the dismantling of an established international trading system, but we are not sure what will emerge in its place’, she said, noting that the US and China together account for 40 percent of the of world’s output and more than 50 percent of global growth. ‘If each were to withdraw into its own exclusive sphere, it will have a devastating effect on other economies’, she said.

Professor Edward CHEN gives closing remarks.

is an asymmetrical multipolar order where the US dominates. Despite disruptions, US supremacy is unlikely to change. Panel Discussion Professor Chan’s address was followed by a panel discussion with Professor CHAN Ka-keung, former Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the Government of HKSAR; Ms. Tara JOSEPH, President of American Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong, and the Honourable Jeffrey LAM Kinfung, Legislative Council Member and Member of the Executive Council of the HKSAR. Professor Edward K Y CHEN, Chairman of HKU SPACE delivered closing remarks. Professor Chan Ka-keung said President Trump is unique in thinking about trade in terms of the deficit, and that China hawks in the White House are using Trump’s presidency to advance their policy goals. ‘[…] of course this is more than trade – this is really a long-term strategic rivalry between the two and I believe there is no way the US will accept a rise in China’s position to challenge the US’, he said. Ms. Joseph saw three reasons for the current impasse. First, the US was caught off-guard by the speed and breadth of China’s rise. Second, the Internet has completely changed the dynamics of communication, and technology companies have become the source of economic growth in the US. Third, the presidents in the US and China are both strong leaders from very different systems. Honourable Lam said trade war had evolved into a political dispute because of the economic and technological competition between China and the US, and the rise in populism globally.

Professor CHAN Heng Chee delivers a keynote speech.

Summary A multi-polar order is emerging due to disagreements on trade, IP and technology between the US and China and because of the structural challenge posed by the rise of China. It

He suggested that Hong Kong seek out new trade opportunities. ‘Maybe this trade war is happening at a good time when all the technology and knowhow has not yet shifted from China’, he said. ‘Maybe we should look north of Hong Kong. The US is very important — we need that market — but we should also look at the China and ASEAN markets’.

Dean Professor Hongbin CAI kicked off the event with his welcome remarks highlighting the importance of fostering faculty-level corporate partnerships as part of his commitment to improving co-curricular development. ‘Through engaging with our corporate partners along with the work of our Careers Team as well as other colleagues in the Faculty, we will strive to ensure that our students are equipped with relevant and up-to-date skills and knowledge, so they may be better prepared for the challenges and opportunities they will face’, he said. Esteemed business leaders Dr. George LAM, Chairman of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited and Mr. Bruce LARSON, Managing Director and Head of Human Capital, Asia Pacific of Goldman Sachs, shared with our

students the skills and qualities needed to thrive in today’s fast-changing world in their keynote speeches. During the mingling session, students were given the opportunity to learn more about the hiring and recruiting process, corporate culture, and career advancement opportunities in different companies. They were encouraged to make connections with their dream employers by giving an elevator pitch in order to nail down any possible mentorship and internship opportunities. ‘I was able to put up to five contact cards with my personal details into the collection boxes of different companies to show my interests’, said a final-year business student who gave this event a positive review. Unlike a recruitment talk, this networking event offered every student participant the chance to meet one-on-one with corporate representatives looking for the right candidates to join their company. Through understanding the job expectations from our students, companies can also fine-tune their talent acquisition and retention strategies. 15

Forging a Strategic Partnership with China Life Insurance (Overseas) FBE and China Life Insurance (Overseas) Company Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a strategic partnership to promote knowledge exchange and drive talent development in both parties. The partnership is in line with FBE’s long-term strategic goal of strengthening ties with the business community. The MoU was signed by Dean Professor Hongbin CAI (2nd from left) and Ms. Maria CHING (2nd from right), Regional Chief Education and Learning Officer of China Life (Overseas) on 21 September 2018, and witnessed by Professor Haipeng SHEN (1st from left), Associate Dean (Executive Education) and Mr. Anlin LIU (1st from right), Deputy Chairman and President of China Life (Overseas). On the heels of signing the MoU, China Life (Overseas) pledged an initial donation of HK$200,000 to set up a scholarship for outstanding students studying in the Master of Science in Business Analytics Programme with an aim of nurturing business analytics professionals for the insurance sector.

Green Business As concerns about climate change grow, a new partnership between the Faculty and Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI) will see the introduction of education about green finance into the undergraduate curriculum. A new three-credit elective course called Impact Investing will be launched in the 2019 academic year covering the developing, financing and evaluating of green projects. Students will have opportunities to take up internships at Climate Bonds Initiative, a not-for-profit organisation that aims to inform and educate market participants about the benefits and challenges of green bond issuance and the need to speed up green financing as economies switch to a low-carbon model. ‘Harnessing green capital, building knowledge and skills around green finance is crucial to mobilising the public and private investment required to meet the urgent climate challenge we all face’, said Sean KIDNEY, CEO of CBI. The partnership will also see CBI and the Faculty working together to raise awareness of the importance of achieving a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy in keeping with the Faculty’s leadership in promoting awareness of climate change and taking action against it. The partnership will also build on the Faculty’s aim to nurture excellent business leaders and complement efforts by the Hong Kong government to create a local talent pipeline.

Accounting for Asymmetrical Information For top managers in conglomerates, gathering information from their divisions that is both complete and accurate is not an easy task, while for capital markets, it’s crucial that the information shared externally is of the highest quality. Five accounting experts found that when internal information asymmetry occurs, the quality of that information suffers.

What happens when a conglomerate lacks full knowledge of what is going on across its internal divisions, and how does that impact the quality of the information that the firm shares externally in its communications with capital markets? That was the crux of a question that five finance and accounting experts set themselves the task of finding out. The results are published in a paper entitled ‘Clarity Begins at Home: Internal Information Asymmetry and External Communication Quality’, published in The Accounting Review in January 2018 and written by Professors Chen CHEN of Monash University, Xiumin MARTIN of Washington University in St Louis, Sugata ROYCHOWDHURY of Boston College, Xin WANG of HKU and Matthew T. BILLETT of Indiana University.

informed about their business’s internal working including knowledge about the customer base, competitive advantages, supplier relationships, operations, and opportunities for investment. Division managers report this information from their business to the firm’s CEO and CFO, who are usually responsible for the firm’s overall strategy and performance. In turn, the CEO and CFO sign off on the financial statements and other disclosures that are critical to capital markets’ knowledge and understanding of the firm. In many firms, the knowledge held by the CEO and CFO is superior to that held by the divisional managers, allowing them to efficiently and fully assess and then share the firm’s overall strengths and weaknesses and strategic direction. In other cases, though, the information from the divisions that lands on the desks of the CEO and CFO may be incomplete or inferior to that held by the divisional manager. In either case, this difference in the information held between top managers and divisional managers results in what the study’s authors term ‘internal information asymmetry’, or IIA. ‘ I I A a r i s e s w h e n to p m a n a g e r s p o s s e s s significantly superior knowledge about their firms relative to divisional managers, or divisional managers possess appropriate information about firm value that top managers lack’, the study’s authors explained.

The importance of the question was clear. Firms share many kinds of financial information with capital markets in their quest to increase the firm’s value and to ensure optimum asset allocation. Capital markets rely heavily on the financial statements, earnings announcements and other disclosures provided by a firm to evaluate a firm’s internal operations, strategies, financial performance and overall state of health. In large conglomerate firms, this external communication becomes particularly complex because of the very different types of business that are typically included in the firm’s overall reporting. In a typical conglomerate, divisional managers run each of the separate businesses. They are thus the best 18

The reasons for the asymmetry may be manifold. One reason is the nature of the information itself. Soft information may be difficult to communicate in a meaningful way to those at the top of a conglomerate’s hierarchy. Internal competition between divisions for a share of the firm’s resources could encourage managers to distort or withhold information, as could an individual manager’s career ambitions. The implications of this asymmetry are many. CEOs have been shown to rely on the input provided by division managers for decision-making and internal capital allocation. In large conglomerates with multiple segments, this reliance is even more pronounced. Lack of access to the full information held by division managers makes it more difficult for top managers to issue accurate

earnings forecasts. This can result in less specific forecasts as managers seek to avoid being inaccurate and creating a tendency in managers to lower market expectations on earnings.

forecasts at all. When they do issue forecasts, the study shows that they are more likely to avoid details and to dampen earnings expectations for fear of being inaccurate, and it’s a fear that is well placed.

Given the importance of the quality of information that a firm shares externally, the study’s mission was to find a way to measure the IIA and then examine its influence on a firm’s external communications. The authors sought to find a method that included not just uncertain information, but the asymmetry in the information held by divisional and corporate managers.

The study resulted in several other observations. For one, physical distance plays an important role in levels of information sharing. Information asymmetry was lower when top managers in headquarters were able to travel more easily to divisional locations. When new flight routes connecting the two were in place, cutting travel time, there were significant declines in DIFRET. This could be because site visits allow top managers to see for themselves how the business is doing, as well as gaining insights into soft information such as employee morale and the peculiarities of local markets. Physical proximity may also encourage division managers to share more information with top managers, as they are more likely to feel that their efforts will be understood and rewarded.

One difficulty the authors faced was how to assess the impact on external communication of information even top managers themselves may not know is lacking. To overcome that challenge, the authors based their research on the reasoning that if managers in a firm have information about their own business divisions that they do not share with others inside the firm, for whatever reason, then the actual returns, or ex post profitability, of their trades in their own firms’ stock will reveal this information. ‘When insider trading profits are higher for the average divisional manger than the average top manager, it is much more likely that top managers lack access to divisional managers’ private information’, they explained. Along with other data, this trading data was thus keenly scrutinised to find the signed difference in profitability in insider trades between those by divisional managers compared with those of top managers. This difference is called DIFRET, defined as the difference in their respective trading profits on their own company’s stock. Overall, the implications of the findings are substantial. ‘Our primary results imply that when IIA is high, various aspects of external communication appear to suffer’, the report said. ‘Managers’ voluntary earnings forecasts are less accurate, less specific, more negatively biased, and less frequent. Mandatory financial statements are more subject to error-driven restatements’. When the level of internal information asymmetry is high, the quality of information shared externally with capital markets is lower. Not only that, but the recognition or suspicion of top managers that they may not be seeing the full picture of the divisions’ business performance can deter them from issuing

There is no suggestion that division managers should share all the information they hold. In a large conglomerate that would be cumbersome and unnecessary. It is normal and useful in most cases for division managers to hold a great deal of private information that never reaches top management, for example, in businesses that are decentralised and where division managers are responsible for making decisions on key issues such as internal investments. At the same time, firms should note the implications of what can happen when top managers lack crucial information. As the authors put it, ‘… the quality of decisions taken within a firm is primarily determined by the internal information advantage of the parties in control of those decisions. Thus, when top managers are at an information disadvantage, the quality of external communication suffers’.

P E O PL E

A Warm Welcome to New Faculty Members In the academic year 2018-19, the Faculty welcomes seven new faculty members. They are all distinguished scholars and experts in their respective fields. Professor James Kai-sing KUNG Professor (Economics) Isaac R Souede Professor in Economic History MPhil & PhD, University of Cambridge BA, University of Guelph

‘Experience suggests that passion and curiosity are important elements of success in one’s career’

My research interests span the economic history of China, its institutions and its political economy of development. Particularly, I am interested in the civil exam system, ‘keju’, because this meritocratic system for selecting officials based on a series of exams appeared in Song Dynasty of ancient China almost 800 years before a similar system was introduced in Europe. This institution has likely bred a culture of valuing education. The meritocratic nature of the civil exam system has an intriguingly strong parallel with the bedrock of China’s economic reforms — one designed to reward individual officials who have achieved robust economic growth in their administrative jurisdictions with promotion to the next level. As an undergraduate, in order to broaden my horizon I took as many electives as possible: anthropology, comparative literature, economic history, philosophy, you name it.

Professor Jin LI Professor (Management and Strategy, Economics) PhD, Massachusetts Institute of Technology BS, California Institute of Technology BA, Wesleyan University

‘Stay open, stay curious, and keep learning new and exciting things’

My main research area lies at the intersection of organisational economics, personnel economics, and labour economics. My research focuses on the dynamics of informal relationships and explores how firms can design organisations — by choosing organisational structure, allocating decision rights, adopting performance review and compensation methods — to align incentives and build trust. This research sheds light on how organisational design can be a source of competitive advantage. I became interested in these topics because they are obviously important, extremely relevant, and fundamentally, immensely fun to work on.

Dr. Shuqing LUO Associate Professor (Accounting and Law) PhD, University of Pittsburgh MSc, Nanyang Technological University

‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step; work ten years like one day’

My research interests are mainly in the role of information in facilitating managers and capital market participants to make sound decisions. Toward this end, I researched 1) the incentive design that helps achieve the desired organisational purposes; 2) the type of information and the quality of such information that can facilitate the decision-making and incentive design, and mechanisms to obtain this information. My advice for FBE students is never think of college as your final stop in learning. Think of college as the years that shape your learning horizon, and build your self-learning and critical thinking skills. These are much more important for your life and self-development than learning the knowledge from one or two textbooks.

Dr. Dan YANG Associate Professor (Innovation and Information Management) PhD, University of Pennsylvania BS, Peking University

‘Work hard and play hard’

My research interests are mainly in data science, which analyses and enriches data. Modern technology has led to datasets of increasingly large and complex structure, which prohibits the direct application of conventional methodology. This type of phenomenon is omnipresent in various areas such as economics, business, finance, biology, healthcare, etc. My primary research focus is to design efficient and effective tools to cope with massive amounts of data, which will eventually advance science, improve business and enhance wellbeing. My advice in my own teaching is always ‘give a man a fish and feed him for a day — yet teach him to fish and feed him for life’, and therefore my advice to students is ‘learn how to fish instead of asking for a fish’, which is the most crucial ability one should learn in college. 34

P E OPLE Dr. Jinzhao DU Assistant Professor (Marketing)

‘Be open-minded, make friends, learn from each other, and understand that there are many perspectives of viewing the world’

PhD, Duke University BS, Tsinghua University

My research interests lie in the area of multi-sided markets, including media markets and matching markets. The evolution of the media industry is happening at an unprecedented speed. The entire ecosystem involves many participants, including media platforms, advertisers, content suppliers, search engines, ad exchanges, news aggregators, consumers, etc. I believe the research in this area will generate important managerial implications such as media platform pricing, content provision, news aggregation, as well as useful policy guidance. My advice to FBE students is that learning does not only happen in classrooms. In fact, most learning happens outside classrooms.

Dr. Ye LUO Assistant Professor (Economics & Finance) BS & PhD, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

‘My task is to bring students closer to real world data science, teach them the principles as well as practices’

My research interests lie in applying machine learning and AI to economics and finance. On the one hand, the potential and benefits of implementing data technology in areas such as business operations, economics and finance are growing fast – for example, digital economy, logistics and financial technology. On the other hand, the data technology itself – namely, machine-learning algorithms – have been developed and are still under fast development. I believe that, for students of business schools, it is important to be aware of the opportunities in the joint field of data science and business. With data science technology, the old business systems become more efficient and new business models rise. I think the training programmes of FBE in data science will broaden our students' vision and future career development.

Dr. Wataru MIYAMOTO Assistant Professor (Economics)

‘Before joining HKU, I have worked at the Bank of Canada so I would like to share the work experience there as well as my research with the HKU community’

MA & PhD, Columbia University BA & MA, University of Tokyo

My research focuses on business cycle fluctuations. I have recently worked on two topics. The first topic is about the role of fiscal policy in counteracting economic downturns. Specifically, I estimated how government spending and tax changes can affect the macro-economy such as GDP, inflation and exchange rates. The second topic focuses on business cycle transmission across countries. In one of the projects, I study whether more international trade leads to large fluctuations in the economy.

An Eye-opening Experience to the World of Finance A group of 15 penultimate year students from the Bachelor of Science in Quantitative Finance Programme went on an international field trip to London in the summer of 2018. They visited not only global financial institutions such as BlackRock and HSBC, but also Wellington International Ltd., a reputable fund management firm, and Ebury, a late-stage FinTech start-up, where they learnt how artificial intelligence is applied to facilitate B2B payments. Throughout the eight-day trip, students were able to network with over 20 financial market practitioners from different business lines, including portfolio investment, risk management, equity research, sales and trading, and FinTech. Finding the Leader in You A new student enrichment programme – Leadership Boot Camp – was introduced exclusively for all first-year students in the Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business and Global Management Programme (IBGM). The aim was to help polish students’ leadership skills and improve freshman team-building through a series of workshops and activities held at a local campsite. During the boot camp, students met with five senior managers who shared their stories on the transition from worker to leader. Through the sharing, students were able to learn about the differences between leadership and management roles, identify and avoid the common pitfalls of new leaders, and discover the route to leadership. IBGM freshmen learn to sharpen their leadership skills and build stronger bonds with their peers through joining the camp.

CHUNG Sin Ming Florence, Year 1 ‘This leadership boot camp was definitely a good experience for university freshmen like me to get to know more people, to expand my social circle, to jump out of my comfort zone, and to develop communication skills and leadership skills. I was able to get to know more about myself and find my strengths and weaknesses’.

Understanding Business Systems in Developing Economies First launched in 2015, the ‘Transformative Business Immersion in Developing Economics’ course offers students a total immersion experience into an unfamiliar business and social environment. After a preparation period in Hong Kong, students travelled to Bohol, the Philippines, where they consulted with local small businesses. Students were able to apply fundamental business principles as well as working on specific issues that the companies faced. While in the Philippines, students lived with local families in a homestay arrangement, allowing them to quickly understand the local culture, customs and business practices.

Students gain hands-on experience working in a local bakery in Bohol, the Philippines.

Study Tour to Greater Bay Area The Institute of Accountants Exchange organised a two-day study tour to Zhuhai for corporate members and university students from Hong Kong. Four FBE students joined the tour and were able to gain a profound understanding of the latest developments in the Greater Bay Area. They visited a wide array of centres and companies, including a 3D printing innovation hub, an entrepreneurship incubator, an international convention and exhibition centre, a leading supplier of unmanned boat R&D, and an international airconditioning company.

STUDENT SHARING Yuki LEUNG Hiu Wan, Bachelor of Economics and Finance, Year 2

Participants learn more about the development of and opportunities in the Greater Bay Area.

‘I was impressed by the recent development of Zhuhai, as it was transforming into a high-tech industrial development zone and a tourist destination at a fast pace. Talents were attracted by local policies and government support, and thus bringing industries in Zhuhai more innovative and constructive ideas. The IT-based industry was mature, given examples like the 3D printing technology and unmanned surface vehicles. As I am interested in technology development, this trip provided me an opportunity to know more about Zhuhai, and hence inspiring me to develop my future career here if possible’.

Understanding Consumer Behaviour in the Digital World Students enrolled in the ‘Consumer Behaviour’ course had the chance to learn more about digital marketing through a guest lecture delivered by industry expert, Mr. Jeffrey CHU, Director of You Find Limited, on 23 October 2018. Mr. Chu started off his business in digital marketing by offering search engine optimisation (SEO) solutions to companies back in the early 2000s. During the early years of his business, he was often turned away by companies because they believed that the Yellow Pages were good enough to get new customers. However, his persistence and determination finally paid off when digital marketing underwent a radical transformation in the past decade. ‘What are the major reasons for companies to go digital?’ Mr. Chu asked at the beginning of his lecture. He then debunked the common myth about digital marketing. ‘Digitalisation is not just for big corporations. Small and even micro-companies can build better branding, drive profitability, boost productivity and enhance analytics capabilities by leveraging digital technologies’. He also highlighted the importance of data-driven decision-making for organisations. ‘Data can provide insights that help business owners and managers make smart decisions’, he said. He cited an interesting example of how box offices can predict a film’s opening weekend revenue using search data.

Values-driven Innovation in Action

Earlier this year, Mr. Larry FINK, Chairman and CEO of BlackRock, sent a letter to leaders of major corporations on how companies must have a social purpose, signalling a major paradigm shift in the purpose of business. ‘To prosper over time, every company must not only deliver financial performance, but also show how it makes a positive contribution to society’. Mr. Fink wrote. In a similar vein, the ‘Values-Driven Innovation’ course was introduced three years ago through the Business Design and Innovation Promotion of the Faculty to enable students to critically rethink the role of business. Students learn how an organisation's values and purpose can become a key driver of innovation for different aspects of a business, from the business model, value chain management, talent management to the development of new offerings and customer experience. Students had a terrific opportunity to learn from the Stan Group about how businesses can create both financial and social returns. They had a taste of the Stan Group's corporate culture at their new innovation hub on Canton Road. Mr. Stan TANG, the Chairman of the group, shared with students how the company’s values provide the cornerstones for the organisation to transform itself and venture into new business opportunities to serve the changing needs of Hong Kong. In the final course assignment, students were asked to come up with innovative ideas on how the Stan Group can serve the silver-haired market in Hong Kong and how the Group can attract new talent to join the company. They presented their proposals to the senior management of the Stan Group and received valuable feedback on how a business should integrate its social mission with vigorous financial discipline and prudent risk management. Students were delighted to hear that the Stan Group would consider whether some of their ideas could be put into action. 38
