WELCOME

Resilience

Dear Film Lovers, Welcome to the 16th Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival! We're proud to once again bring you a jam-packed week of films showcasing high-quality international talent and creativity. With a mix of satire, suspense, the serious and the surprising, we have chosen exceptional films to suit every taste. Some will keep you on the edge of your seat, while others will make you laugh til you cry. Though there were several close contenders for a theme this year, we picked Resilience. Many of our films have strong protagonists who take fate into their own hands, acting wisely in the face of adversity and making tough decisions that affect their world, and at times the course of history itself. The ability to overcome challenges while turning misfortune into success is something we can all aspire to... A special thank you to our many supporters and sponsors, who make this Festival a reality. Thank you also to my wonderful committee, without whom there would be no festival at all. Looking forward to seeing you at the movies, and as always we welcome audience feedback, because this Festival is for you.

Debby Amias chair

ď€ ď€ Message from the Israeli Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong

Congratulations on the 16th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival! We are dedicated to promoting trade and development between Hong Kong SAR and Israel for mutual benefit. Our loyalties lie first and foremost with our members, acting as their voice in advising the Israeli Government in matters affecting businesses and the economy, providing members with business information and opportunities, and facilitating networking through a variety of Chamber activities. The Jewish Community and the Chamber members have enjoyed the spectacular movies we have seen the past 15 years. Thanks to Sharon Ser and her team. Movies are wonderful entertainment. You can express happiness, love, sorrow and harmony. I see this event as a significant culture exchange between the Jewish nation and the Chinese society in Hong Kong as well as the rest of the community. We couldn’t have come this far without you. Best wishes

Maccabi World Union (HK Chapter) Ltd. Hong Kong – Macau – China

Looking forward to the 20th Maccabiah Games in 2017 *World’s 3 rd Largest International Sports Event* Congratulations on the 16th Anniversary of the Hong Kong Jewish Film Festival! The Maccabi spirit is working wonders all over the Jewish world. MWU has enjoyed a year of excellent mass events infused with Jewish and Zionist motivation, all working towards the Maccabi answer to the difficult times that we live in. Ten years ago, the 17th Maccabiah Games took place on 11th July 2005 in Israel was absolute success, especially when China, Hong Kong and Macedonia participated in the games for the first time since 1932. We, Hong Kong brought some medals back. I would like to share with you my personal experience at the European Maccabi Games which opened in Berlin on 28th July this year at the stadium where Hitler (May his soul be forgotten forever!) opened the 1932’s Olympic Games. The significance of Jewish athletes returning to the Olympic Park of Berlin, the very place where 79 years ago Jews where prohibited to participate in the Olympic Games, cannot be stressed enough! It is difficult to describe the emotional feelings I had during the opening ceremony, again showing the survival and revival of the Jewish people! There, at the center of Hitler´s Olympic Park when thousands of Jewish athletes and supporters from 36 countries sang the Hatikvah and said the Kaddish by the Chief Rabbi of Berlin for the memory of our love ones, we proved that we are alive. Many great sports results were achieved, and many medals were awarded in the 19 types of sport fiercely contested at the 14th European Maccabi Games in Berlin, all in the wonderful spirit of friendship that marks Maccabi events, but another type of record – the really important, and my personal favorite – was set on the Friday evening, when 2370 athletes and guests set the Guinness Book of World Records mark for the Largest-ever Kabbalat Shabbat under One Roof! Today, we are looking forward to the 20th Maccabiah Games in 2017. With even a larger team from Hong Kong, Macau, China which will participate in the games. Please start saving your money for the trip to Israel. I promise you will have the best time of your life.

CHAZAK CHAZAK V'NITCHAZEK!

OPENING NIGHT

On May 8 1972, hijackers from the Palestinian terror organization Black September took control of Belgian Sabena Flight 571 from Brussels to Tel Aviv, an event that marked the beginning of 30 nerve-wracking hours that riveted Israel. This captivating docudrama recalls the tense series of events surrounding the hijacking, through exclusive interviews with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as well as former prime minister Ehud Barak, former president Shimon Peres and the sole surviving hijacker, Therese Halsa. The film juxtaposes different versions of the hijacking, alongside archive material and cinematic re-enactment of the dramatic events. Recently premiered in Jerusalem in the presence of the prime ministers, who are depicted as young men in the film, Sabena poses tough political and historical questions that are not only still important, but have shaped Israel today.

In preparing for a play, a class of fourth graders from a small town in France discover a tragic episode of the Second World War - the story of 44 children detained and deported in 1944. The nine year olds travel to Izieu, the house where the Jewish children had lived, to perform in the garden of the house. This is a beautiful lesson in the transmission of memory, as seen through the playful and authentic eyes of the children.

SUNDAY

5:25 PM followed by Crossing the Line 2

Almost 70 years after the liberation of the Nazi extermination camps, some anti-Semites continue to deny the planned execution of the Jews by the Nazis. According to French historian Annette Wieviorka, the issue lies in the fact that following the war, many survivors did not wish to speak of their experience, or were simply silenced. This opened the doors to past perpetrators, collaborators, or anticommunist extreme rightists, to fill the silence with denials and their versions of history.

It took twenty years, at the Eichmann Trial in Jerusalem, to finally hear the testimony of 111 survivors. Nevertheless, despite the facts, deniers are still prevalent, focusing on technicalities of the Final Solution; and today, accusing Israel of having “invented” the Shoah to serve its own interests. Riveting and disturbing, this important documentary focuses on the evolution of different anti-Semitic tendencies.

This eye-opening documentary explores the hidden concept of 'sacred sperm' within the ultra-Orthodox Hasidic Jewish community, through the personal journey of the director Ori Gruder. We follow Gruder's attempts to fully understand one of Judaism's most difficult and important prohibitions - for men to avoid spilling their sperm - and his struggles to explain to his teenage son why he should keep this commandment, perceived by many as unreasonable and impossible to fulfil. Sacred Sperm highlights how we are all vulnerable in some way, as we watch Gruder, who became Orthodox as an adult, ask himself, “Am I worthy of teaching my son?" Press Following this film there will be a Q & A session with director Ori Gruder

Voice of Peace

SUNDAY

NOVEMBER

12:30 PM

Former fighter pilot turned political activist, Abie Nathan dreamed of a more peaceful world and not least a more peaceful Middle East. In 1973, he established the Voice of Peace, Israel's first pirate radio station anchored off the Tel Aviv coast. During the 70's the radio station had more than 20 million enthusiastic listeners all over the Middle East, and Nathan's concept of peace, love and good music elicited support from artists such as John Lennon and Bob Dylan. He also worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring Israeli and Arab politicians to the negotiating table. A fascinating portrait of a visionary dreamer.

There are actually more startups in Tel-Aviv than in the whole of Europe and more Venture Capital is invested per person than anywhere else in the world. This film follows four startup teams over the course of two years, as they progress from a simple idea on a napkin, until they hit the jackpot or go bust. Throughout their journey, we catch an intimate and exciting glimpse of how the 'High-Tech Nation' really works.

Rock in the Red Zone

SUNDAY

5:00 PM

Rock in the Red Zone is an intimate portrayal of life on the edge in the war-torn city of Sderot. Once known for its prolific rock scene that revolutionized Israeli music, for thirteen years the town has been the target of ongoing rocket fire from the Gaza strip. Through the personal lives and music of Sderot's diverse musicians, and the personal narrative of the filmmaker, who ends up calling the town home, the film chronicles the town's trauma and reveals its enduring spirit.

Press "Rock in the Red Zone" is the best and most important Israeli documentary I've seen in years. Nothing comes close to getting inside the Israeli psyche and soul." -Yossi Klein Halevi
