“I felt inspired to take part” A gruelling eight-day trek has helped Headway Devon staff members Maxine Gazzard and Natalie Clapshaw to raise over £3,600 for local people with brain injuries. The expedition through the Peruvian Andes to the world famous site of Machu Picchu saw the intrepid pair climb to over 4,600m above sea level.

Maxine explained, “After seeing first-hand how the charity’s work makes a difference to the lives of local people, I felt inspired to take part in the challenge and raise as much as possible.” If you’d like to support the girls you can sponsor their trek by filling in the donation form overleaf.

“Headway has helped me so much” In May, Nigel Teague took part in a 100ft abseil to raise money for Headway Devon, the charity who he says “have helped me so much.” But nearly twenty years ago, things were very different for him. In 1992, Nigel was in a motorcycle accident that left him with badly broken legs and a brain injury. As a result, Nigel had problems with his memory, couldn’t hold down a job and spent a lot of time on his own. Nigel got in touch with Headway Devon and he now attends the centre in Torquay. The structured activities and chance to meet new people have made a real difference to Nigel, who reflects, “Before I didn’t do anything, I just lived for seeing my kids but now I have the support of Headway and my fiancé I can do things like go swimming in the week and meet with friends at the centre.”

Anne Mattock, Headway Devon’s Chief Executive, says: “thank you so much to everyone who got involved in Action for Brain Injury Week. The huge range of events across the county helped to raise vital funds for Headway Devon and boosted awareness of the life-changing disabilities that brain injury can cause.”
