Design Entrepreneurship und ­Design Research mit gesellschaftlicher Relevanz

Design Entrepreneurship and Design Research with a Social Impact

Flore Pillet, Ina Navahrodskaya, Nina Paim, Peter Kessel und Petr Vanek schlossen im Januar 2017 ihr Studium in Design Entrepreneurship oder Design Research ab. Damit sind sie die ersten Absolventinnen und Absolventen des neuen MA Communication Design. Der Studiengang unterstützt Studierende dabei, die Komplexität sozial relevanter Probleme zu erfassen, zu interpretieren und innovative Lösungen zu entwickeln. Studierende der Vertiefung Design Entrepreneurship absolvieren ihr Studium mit einem Konzept für ein design-basiertes Produkt oder eine Dienstleistung, welches sie zur Grundlage einer anschliessenden unternehmerischen Karriere machen. Studierende der Vertiefung Design Research absolvieren ihr Studium mit einem Plan für ein Forschungsprojekt, das sie in ihrer anschliessenden akademischen Karriere durchführen. Finden Sie heraus, welche individuellen Projekte unsere Studierenden aus diesen Vorgaben entwickelt haben.

Flore Pillet, Ina Navahrodskaya, Nina Paim, Peter Kessel and Petr Vanek finished their studies in Design Entrepreneurship or Design Research in January 2017. They are the first graduates of the new HKB / MA Communication Design – a study programme that supports its students in grasping the complexity of socially relevant problems, in interpreting them, and in developing innovative solutions. On the Design Entrepreneurship track students conclude their studies with a concept for a design-based product or service that they can make into the basis of a subsequent entrepreneurial career. On the «Design Research» track students conclude their studies with a plan for a research project that they will carry out in their subsequent academic career. Enjoy finding out how our students interpreted those speci­ fications to develop individual projects.

The most powerful tools for learning are the ones that students love to use. Flore Pillet believes in historical knowledge as an essential skill for everyone. This is why she has designed e-History, a new history teaching tool that creates unique opportunities and learning experiences for teachers and students in high schools. It changes the way teachers teach and students learn. e-History is a digital tool that provides teachers with everything they need for teaching. It is a web platform where teachers can write about subjects for their lessons and can publish articles that include videos, podcasts, images and books. Teachers can create their own history textbook and finally teach in the ways they’ve always imagined. e-History is a dynamic tool where students and teachers can like, comment, highlight or save articles. Using all the platform‘s functions, students and teachers can express themselves individually on different subjects. Furthermore, the platform is accessible on every device to all students from the same class. Flore Pillet is working in collaboration with students and teachers to help them to become comfortable with new technology. In so doing, she helps them to integrate the platform into their curriculum, and shows them how to create engaging articles. In addition, e-History provides a series of workshops designed specifically for educators.

Endlich ist ein aktuelles Online Magazin sowie Marktplatz mit dem Ziel, ein stärkeres Bewusstsein für zeitgenössische Bestattungskultur zu schaffen. Es bietet den Lesenden Informationen und Zugang zu neuen und alternativen Ritualen, Produkten und Diensleistungen auf diesem Gebiet. So fördert Endlich individuelle Ansätze im Umgang mit Tod, Trauer und Gedenken für die Sterbenden und ihre Hinterbliebenen. Die Idee ist es, eine zentrale Anlaufstelle für neue Bestattungskultur zu schaffen: für die Produkte, Orte und Dienstleistungen, welche sich bereits heute den wachsenden Bedürfnissen einer sich verändernden Zielgruppe angepasst haben. Digitalität, regionale Ungebundenheit, Ansprüche an Nachhaltigkeit und Ästhetik sowie gesellschaftliche Veränderungen prägen unser Leben. Jedoch haben diese Themen kaum Einfluss auf unseren Umgang mit Tod, Trauer, Gedenken und Bestattung. Beim Verlust einer geliebten Person entscheiden sich immer mehr Menschen unter hohem emotionalen und zeitlichen Druck für minimalistische und anonyme ­Lösungen. Denn die Bilder der heutigen Bestattungskultur – geprägt durch christliches Brauchtum, Friedhöfe und die Schaufenster traditioneller Bestattungsunterhemen –, passen nicht zwangsläufig zu individuellen Lebensläufen und darin begründeten Bedürfnissen. ­Jeder Mensch ist einzigartig! – Und so sollte auch jeder Mensch Zugang zu einer Bestattungskultur haben, die zum eigenen Leben passt.

Ina Navahrodskaya Who planted trees? (EN) A social/educational project Specialisation: Design Entrepreneurship Mentors: Jacqueline Baum This project was inspired by a book by the French author Jean Giono: The Man Who Planted Trees, and is a transdisciplinary project combining design with the «Art-based Environmental Education» (AEE) research method. It aims to raise awareness about the importance of trees in our life, and to promote the idea among children of protecting and respecting nature. The project is a non-profit initiative and doesn’t aim to make any financial profit. Its goal is to develop a new educational programme for schools based on AEE, and a web archive with children’s drawings on the topic. An exhibition and an archive of interviews offering diverse opinions will complete the project. Participants from different countries will be able to upload their own artworks individually to the website. The workshop plan can be used by educators worldwide and is available for download. A printed study kit can also be purchased. Furthermore, the web page/online archive will contain information about organisations that support planting trees and play an active part in decreasing deforestation worldwide. 282

Petr Vanek Coffee Ground Lab (EN) Products based on coffee waste Specialisation: Design Entrepreneurship Mentors: Anna Comiotto and Ondrej Tichy «What happens with the rest of the coffee that remains on the bottom of your daily cup of espresso?» This question motivated Petr Vanek to take a closer look at coffee waste. Food waste is one of the biggest components of our municipal waste. More than 93% of coffee grounds end up in landfill. The remaining 7% are used as fuel, biopolymer, in cosmetology, for growing mushrooms, for making paper, and for planting. In one average café in Basel, customers drink about 150-300 cups of espresso daily, which produces about 5 kg of waste. Most cafés just dispose of it as common garbage, even though coffee grounds are a valuable material. The goal of this project is to use discarded coffee grounds to develop a fully biodegradable material that is recyclable and can be easily broken down in nature. To this end, Petr Vanek established the brand Coffee Ground Lab, which will focus on sustainable products


from coffee waste. The brand’s first product is a planting kit. It consists of a planting cup which is sealed with a wooden lid and contains seeds according to what the customer wants. The cup can be inserted directly into the soil, supports the growth of flowers and protects them against insects and slugs. The planting kit could appeal to people living in cities who plant their own food, and also might interest bigger horticultural and gardening centres. Within the framework of the Coffee Ground Lab, material experiments will be carried out to determine the best combination of materials. At the same time, relationships between cafés and urban gardens will be maintained in order to support local businesses and a zero-waste philosophy.

Nina Paim Learning from Niggli (EN) Specialisation: Design Research Mentors: Sundar Henny, Robert Lzicar and Catherine Ince

MA Communication Design

Learning from Niggli is a historiographic account investigating the publishing strategies of the Swiss publishing house Verlag Arthur Niggli as it was established and led by its original founders and main protagonists: Ida and Arthur Niggli. The project will be concluded in a multilingual publication directed at designers, historians, book collectors and the general public. Niggli Verlag is an established publisher, recognised both in Switzerland and abroad. Its name has entered the canon of history predominantly through the fields of arts, architecture and design. Today, Niggli is mostly remembered and celebrated for its typography manuals, most of which went through several re-editions and reprints, several having been widely distributed internationally, with a few achieving cult status or becoming collector’s items. However, in its first phase of existence, Niggli’s programme was remarkably diverse, expanding far beyond the fields of architecture, arts and design. With an overall interest in informative and pedagogical books, Niggli published books in various other areas, such as literature, the regional and the folkloric, music, sexuality and cooking – a fact which today remains largely unacknowledged. Niggli Verlag still exists, and today it is the property of its fourth consecutive owner. However, despite its long tradition and proven track record, the history of Niggli Verlag is still largely unexplored, and thus the totality of its publishing programme remains virtually unknown. At the same time, the image of Niggli Verlag stands as a homogenous, simplified one: that of a publisher which excelled at and promoted modernism and international Swiss Style. Embodying Walter Benjamin’s idea of brushing history «against the grain», the project Learning from Niggli aims at providing a historical account of Niggli Verlag that includes its complexities and contradictions.
