Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far. This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds. Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses. The Government is committed to promoting the development of arts and culture in the city, and we are blessed to have the support of devoted sponsors and donors who join us in making the Hong Kong Arts Festival an international success. This year, we take the notion of "what’s real to me" to celebrate the realities created through the artistry, creativity and thoughtfulness of our participating artists. Many works are informed by highly personal views, whether responding to some aspect of human experience as a matter of artistic motivation, or as a narrative device. Taken as a whole, I hope this Festival will provoke us to think about – and perhaps to question – our own understanding of what’s real. I hope that you will allow yourself to be immersed in the realities presented on stage at this and many other performances at the 46th HKAF, and enjoy the resulting co-created experience. I would also recommend the many PLUS performances and events that have been designed to enrich your Festival experience. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts Festival In, Of and For Hong Kong

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres, such as*: • Western opera: Bavarian State Opera, The Bolshoi Theatre, The Mariinsky Theatre • Chinese opera: China National Peking Opera Company, Hebei Clapper Opera Troupe, Shanghai Zhang Jun Kunqu Art Center, Suzhou Kunqu Opera Company of Jiangsu, Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe • Classical music: Cecilia Bartoli, Riccardo Chailly, Gustavo Dudamel, Philip Glass, Yo-Yo Ma, Anna Netrebko, Gianandrea Noseda, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Christian Thielemann, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rundfunkchor Berlin, Thomanerchor Leipzig, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra • Jazz and world music: Bobby McFerrin, Youssou N'Dour, Esperanza Spalding, Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, Pink Martini • Dance: Mikhail Baryshnikov, Sylvie Guillem, Akram Khan, John Neumeier, American Ballet Theatre, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Hamburg Ballet, New York City Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch

• Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

Resident at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, WNO Orchestra is one of two permanent, full-time ensembles at the heart of the Company, alongside WNO Chorus. Former Music Directors of Welsh National Opera and its Orchestra include Carlo Rizzi (now WNO Conductor Laureate), Lothar Koenigs and the late Sir Charles Mackerras. Tomáš Hanus joined the Company as Music Director in August 2016. In addition to a substantial operatic remit for WNO, the Orchestra’s stature and reputation as a worldclass ensemble in its own right is demonstrated by its distinguished involvement in the International Concert Series in Cardiff each year. Born in 1862 in a suburb of Paris, Claude Debussy’s parents were not from a wealthy background, but their son’s clear gift at the piano meant that he was able to enter the Paris Conservatory at the age of just 11. Debussy’s original approach to harmony and musical structure was hugely influential, utilising scales and tonal structures that firmly rejected the tradition of the 19th century and are considered of seminal importance in the 20th century canon.

Pelléas et Mélisande is Debussy’s only completed opera, and his intention in composing it was to create a dream-like atmosphere that rejected big, showy scenes and the predominance of overly grand scores for voice and orchestra. In his mission to achieve this his discovery of Maurice Maeterlinck’s play provided the perfect material. Containing the composer’s recognisably delicate approach to orchestral colour alongside the complex and subtle harmonies that he is famous for, Debussy’s Pelléas is considered one of the great 20th century opera masterpieces.

Synopsis Act One

Act Three

While out hunting in the ancient forests of Allemonde, Golaud, a widower and the grandson of the aged King Arkel, loses his way and stumbles across a frightened and mysterious girl sitting by a pool. Deep in the water there is a crown, but the enigmatic Mélisande refuses to allow Golaud to try and retrieve it for her, despite her distress. He persuades her to come with him, leaving the forest behind.

Pelléas comes to the tower to bid farewell to Mélisande, but he is entranced by her long, flowing hair, and kisses it. Golaud reprimands them for behaving like children and leaves with his halfbrother, taking him to a gloomy and oppressive vault. When they emerge, he warns Pelléas that Mélisande is expecting a child.

Months later in the royal palace, Golaud’s mother Genevieve reads aloud a letter from her son. Golaud writes that he has married Mélisande, and swears he will sail away forever if the king disapproves of his bride, whose identity still remains a mystery. The King forgives Golaud, and charges Pelléas – his other grandson and Golaud’s half-brother – with relating the news of his approval. Pelléas asks to be allowed to bid farewell to a dying friend, but the King reminds him of his duty: Pelléas must await his brother’s return, attend to his ailing father, and greet Golaud’s bride, Mélisande. At Geneviève’s bidding, Pelléas takes Mélisande into his care, and together they watch the departure of a ship. Act Two Deep in the park, Pelléas and Mélisande come across a well; Mélisande is playing with her wedding ring and she accidentally drops it into the water. Simultaneously, deep in the forest, Golaud is struck by a sensation of great loss, and his horse bolts. Mélisande tends to him in his weakness, but she begins to weep, explaining that she longs to escape the castle. Golaud notices that her wedding ring is missing, and he sends Pelléas and Mélisande away to find it in the grotto where she has falsely said she lost it to avoid arousing suspicion. Mélisande is terrified by the sinister, moonlit grotto, which is full of sleeping beggars, and she begs to be taken away.

Pelléas and Mélisande meet in the castle alone, and Golaud is devoured by jealousy. He orders his young son from his first marriage, Yniold, to observe the couple; although the frightened boy reports nothing improper, Golaud remains suspicious. Act Four Pelléas resolves to leave the castle, and arranges to meet Mélisande one last time at the well where she lost her ring. King Arkel tries to reassure Mélisande that the castle will be happier once Pelléas’ father recovers from his illness. He is mortified when Golaud accuses Mélisande of infidelity, and throws her to the floor. She weeps in sorrow, and Arkel is full of pity for her. By the well, little Yniold is trying to find a ball he has lost; however he is distracted by the sight of sheep being led to the slaughter and wanders off. Pelléas and Mélisande meet there once again, and quietly declare their love, unaware that Golaud is spying on them. The enraged husband strikes Pelléas down, and chases the pregnant Mélisande. Act Five Mélisande has given birth prematurely. Golaud is full of remorse, but despite Mélisande’s suffering he demands to know whether she was unfaithful to him. Arkel brings Mélisande her baby, while she, growing weaker, maintains her innocence….

Director’s Note Director David Pountney explains how the melancholy Symbolist language of Pe l l é a s e t Mélisande teases out the ability of characters who live “beyond the rules” to cause destruction and mayhem among those of us whose lives are governed by more prosaic realities. Mélisande appears in the world without progenitors – she is “found” by the side of a pond by Golaud, who is himself lost – so it is open to question right from the start with regards to who found who. There is a crown lying in the water: “C’est la couronne qu’il m’a donnée”, and the implication is that its previous “owner” (Lover? Husband?) has done violence to her, and apparently got rid of her in a hurry. We are from the start therefore predisposed to feel sympathy for her, but the outcome of her long battle with Golaud (or is it his long battle with her?) is, again, violence. Her method, if it is a method, is passive, which gives her the illusion of innocence. She allows her wedding ring merely to slip from her grasp into the well, as if it had a will of its own, but in the very same moment Golaud is thrown from his horse and badly injured. Does Mélisande really possess such power? She certainly possesses a sort of helpless guile. Having lost the ring, she allows Golaud to order her to go with Pelléas to look for it, having deceived him about the place where it was lost. After the several lies she has uttered in this scene, we may not be prepared to take her exclamation of shock: “Avec Pelléas?” quite at its face value. And by the end of the opera, all the men in the melancholy castle of Allemonde have declared their love for her in one way or another, including the blind and aged King Arkel.

David Pountney Mélisande inhabits a lost and remote world, deep in the forest, a haunting realm of morbid, repressed desire bordering on the perverted. One of the most dangerous seductive techniques of these “innocents” is to propose or inhabit alternative realities where we can escape the dread imperatives of the real world. Arrested development is a powerful theme in these pieces – Mélisande never shows any sign of taking responsibility for the erotic havoc she has brought about, despite being sexually active with two men in the castle. For Mélisande, there are equally parallels and prototypes for the dreamy, seemingly innocent girl, starting with Trilby, the eponymous heroine of George du Maurier’s novel (and after whom the hat is named), who is hypnotised into performing as a singer by Svengali but never remembers anything about it afterwards. Everyone falls in love with her of course. Then there is the maddeningly enigmatic Julietta in Martin ’s opera of the same name, a sort of Cheshire cat of a character – you are never sure if she is really there. Like Lolita, all these characters pose the question of who is innocent, and who is ultimately responsible for what happens. The power of Maeterlinck’s beautifully poised ambiguity in the play on which Debussy based his opera is that we are gripped by the impossibility of knowing. We can hardly avoid recognising the darker psychological implication beneath the fairy tale setting.

Elusive half-lights A m o n g t h e m os t p o e t i c wo rd s o f t h e Fre n ch language, crépuscule – usually rendered in English as twilight – encapsulates the mood of the Symbolist aesthetic with which Debussy was connected in finde-siècle Paris when he began work on his operatic adaptation of Maeterlinck’s play Pelléas et Mélisande in 1893. Describing the eerie half-lights between sunset and the deeper obscurity of night, crépuscule is darker and more ominous than dusk, and evokes the melancholic world of mystical dreams and imaginings beloved by the Symbolists that also inspired Debussy. Subdued, intimate and mysterious, the orchestral sound-colours of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande oscillate between elusive half-lights and the sultry intoxication of a seemingly unending night where glimpses of light are fleeting and distant. The brief appearances of day when Mélisande flirtatiously loses her wedding ring in Act Two, Scene One, and when Pelléas emerges from the depths of the castle vaults in Act Three, Scene Three, serve to emphasise the oppressive gloom in which Maeterlinck’s characters are otherwise entrapped; the creeping shadows of the labyrinthine forest are never far away. While Mélisande both craves yet fears liberation through her instinctive yearning for light and love, she remains imprisoned in the half-light, breathing her last as the fading rays of a setting sun glint through an open window. Debussy’s music sounds one last memory of the seductive motif associated with her cascading hair before evaporating into silence as the pervading darkness of the mysterious Allemonde subsumes existence. Debussy’s musical explorations of these ominous half-lights have parallels in painting as well as in literature. His rich orchestral colourism, harmonic sensuality and fascination for sound as timbre reveal new textural relationships that equate with the ways certain painters sought new means of depicting light – or darkness – and blending colour.

Caroline Rae While Debussy abhorred the word Impressionism, which he considered merely a term of abuse (his cantata Printemps (1887) was attacked for its “vague impressionism”) he admired the work of the Impressionist painters who, like himself, were concerned with developing innovative techniques in a precise if radically different way. Intrigued as much by the difficulties of documenting the transient effects of light at night, as well as during the hours of day, Monet, Pissarro and Van Gogh all completed night paintings, as did their English predecessor and Impressionist forebear Turner whom Debussy described as the “greatest creator of mystery in art”. Monet’s nocturnal paintings of the sea Marine, effet de nuit (1866) and Port du Havre, effet de nuit (1871) suggest the mysterious seascapes with tiny pinpoints of shimmering light that were later evoked in Pelléas et Mélisande as the antithesis of Allemonde’s stifling gloom. At the time of composing his opera, Debussy was particularly attracted to the “Nocturne” paintings of the American-born artist James McNeill Whistler from whom he borrowed the title for his orchestral triptych Nocturnes (1899), a work originally named Scènes au crépuscule. Like Debussy, Whistler frequented the Symbolist circles of 1890s Paris and also attended the 1893 production of Maeterlinck’s Pelléas et Mélisande. Just as Whistler’s seascape Nocturne (1870-1877) and his near abstract Nocturne in Black and Gold – The Falling Rocket (1875) explore subtle harmonies of colour in restricted palettes of darks and greys delicately accentuated with fragments of glittering highlights, Debussy’s sound-world in Pelléas and in the Nocturnes is similarly subdued yet paradoxically intense. Such a moment of powerful intensity occurs in Act Three, Scene Two when the jealous Golaud leads Pelléas to the depths of the castle dungeons in one of the darkest and most ominous sections of the opera. While quiet and understated, an atmosphere of terrifying brooding tension is

evoked through pianissimo low strings coloured with murmuring timpani, horns and bassoons to underline the stench of death emanating from the stagnant pool at the bottom of the dungeon; the use of the whole-tone scale in fleeting melodic fragments on oboes at their lowest register obscures the tonality to emphasise Golaud’s sinister objectives. When Pelléas escapes into the daylight in the following scene, the music is at once more animated and rapidly ascends to the orchestra’s upper registers with brilliant arpeggio flourishes on flute and harp, shimmering tremolando strings creating an explosive crescendo to a rare più forte as he exclaims, “At last I can breathe again”. Both Whistler and Debussy enhance the mystery of darkness through momentary glimpses of light, and in so doing connect with the Symbolist aim to evoke and suggest rather than merely describe.

Another important artistic influence on Debussy during his Symbolist years that climaxed with Pelléas et Mélisande was the work of the English Pre-Raphaelites which he first discovered in the 1880s. Their sensuality, fondness for mythological subjects and pseudo-medieval imagery chimed with Debussy’s attraction to Wagner whose music epitomised the Symbolists’ quest for the exotic “other”. The paintings of Dante Gabriel Rossetti such as The Blessèd Damozel (1875-1878), which illustrates the poem that inspired Debussy’s deeply Wagnerian lyric cantata La damoiselle élue (1889), portray a new kind of ethereal yet melancholic feminine beauty that exudes a sense of tragic innocence closely related to Debussy’s characterisation of Mélisande, whose similarly cascading hair engulfs and intoxicates the observer.

Rossetti’s haunting images of the seductive yet chaste Pre-Raphaelite woman often suggest a yearning for fulfilment of love in death. While ideas of the love-death are supremely redolent of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, they are also echoed in the unfolding tragedy of Pelléas et Mélisande, a connection underlined by Debussy’s Tristanesque harmonic references in the seductive balcony scene opening Act Three, as well as in their love declarations of the last scene of Act Four. If Debussy’s self-declared objective in Pelléas et Mélisande was to write music that could explore the mysterious affinity between nature and the imagination, the opening Prelude presents the essence of what the opera is about in a mere 23 bars while establishing a palette of orchestral sound-colour that is a masterful representation of fleeting musical half-lights. The potentially unending forest theme whispers its brooding

presence on pianissimo low strings and bassoons with a repetitive melodic line outlining bare fifths that symbolises both the circularity of the plot as well as inescapable oppressive gloom. The woodwind interrupt with a more rhythmically assertive idea, oscillating around two notes, that is associated with the blustering and insensitive Golaud who strives for action yet achieves nothing. After more of the all-pervasive forest theme and another appearance of Golaud’s motif, the harmony momentarily clears for a delicately playful pentatonic melody on solo oboe over shimmering divisi strings that symbolises the vulnerable and confused Mélisande. The fragmentary nature of the Prelude with its constantly shifting harmonies and lack of cadences not only signals the dysfunctional relationship between Golaud and Mélisande but also the impending doom that is about to unfold within the dark psychological labyrinth that is the Forest of Allemonde.

David Pountney

Artistic Director and Director

David Pountney was born in Oxford and studied at St John’s College, Cambridge. In a career spanning over 45 years he has been Director of Productions at Scottish Opera and English National Opera, Intendant of the Bregenzer Festspiele and, since 2011, Artistic Director of WNO. Pountney's pioneering productions have won him Janá ek and Martin medals and Olivier Awards, while his original librettos have been set to music by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Elena Langer. He has also translated librettos into English from Russian, Czech, German and Italian. David Pountney is a CBE and has been decorated with civilian honours by Austria, Poland and France. Pountney’s recent directorial engagements include La forza del destino (WNO); Das Rheingold, Die Walküre (Lyric Opera of Chicago); and In Parenthesis (WNO). He will be directing Francesca da Rimini (Teatro alla Scala); Die sieben Todsünden, Pierrot Lunaire (Opéra National du Rhin) and Mahagonny Songspiel (Opéra National du Rhin).

Lothar Koenigs Conductor Lothar Koenigs was born in Aachen and studied piano and conducting in Cologne. From 1999 to 2003 he was Music Director in Osnabrück and from 2009 to 2016 he was Music Director of Welsh National Opera. Since 2003 Koenigs’ guest engagements have included the Wiener Staatsoper, the Metropolitan Opera, New York and the Teatro alla Scalla in a wide repertoire from Mozart to Berg with a particular emphasis on the operas of Wagner, Strauss and Janá ek. Koenigs recently conducted Der Kreidekreis (Opéra de Lyon); Wozzeck (Den Norske Opera); and Die tote Stadt (Polish National Opera). He will be conducting Ariadne auf Naxos (Bayerische Staatsoper).

Johan Engels

Set Designer

Johan Engels was born in Scottburgh, South Africa, and studied Fine Arts and Design at the University of Pretoria. He moved to the UK in 1980 and worked in theatre and opera around the world. Engels designed four productions for WNO, namely Don Carlos, Lulu, Chorus! and Pelléas et Mélisande. He worked with David Pountney on over 20 operas, including the current Ring Cycle at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Johan Engels died in 2014.

Marie-Jeanne Lecca was born in Bucharest and studied at the city’s Nicolae Grigorescu Institute of Fine Arts. A puppet designer and BAFTA-nominated costume designer, she was awarded a Martin Medal in 2000 for her designs for Julietta and The Greek Passion. She has worked frequently with David Pountney, including on the current Ring Cycle at the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Recent costume design credits include La forza del destino (WNO); Das Rheingold, Die Walküre (Lyric Opera of Chicago) and The Haunted Manor (Opera Narodowa). Forthcoming engagements include costume design for Francesca da Rimini (Teatro alla Scala); and overall design for Die sieben Todsünden, Pierrot Lunaire and Mahagonny Songspiel (Opéra National du Rhin).

Mark Jonathan is a lighting designer for theatre and arena productions. He worked on production lighting at Glyndebourne Opera for 14 years and was Head of Lighting at the Royal National Theatre from 1993 to 2003. Jonathan received critical acclaim for his work on Lulu for Welsh National Opera in 2013 and he is in frequent demand by Opera Holland Park, Scottish Opera, Den Jyske Opera and Los Angeles Opera. Recent lighting design credits include Zazà (Opera Holland Park); Semele (Garsington Opera); Jen fa (Kungliga Operan); forthcoming lighting design engagements include Madama Butterfly (Glyndebourne Festival Opera); Die Zauberflöte (Garsington Opera) and Vanessa (Glyndebourne Festival Opera).

Alexander Martin studied Music at St John’s College, Cambridge, and the piano at Royal College of Music. He then worked as répétiteur at Opéra National de Lyon, Hamburgische Staatsoper and Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden before embarking on a freelance career working as conductor, assistant and coach. Martin was Chorus Master at Stadttheater Bern and Opéra National de Bordeaux before joining Welsh National Opera in 2014.

Timothy Burke

Timothy Burke was born in Kingston and was a Choral Scholar at HM Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace. He read Music at Exeter College, Oxford, before training as a répétiteur at Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Burke worked as a répétiteur for Sir Colin Davis and Sir Charles Mackerras and joined Opera North as Chorus Master in 2008 before becoming Music Director of Tête à Tête in 2013. Recent production credits include conducting Tosca (WNO); Patience (English Touring Opera); and Le nozze di Figaro (Scottish Opera).

James Southall

Music Preparation

James Southall has been a répétiteur with WNO since 2008. He was an Organ Scholar at Queens’ College, Cambridge, before completing his Master of Music at the Royal College of Music. As a pianist he has won the Accompanist’s Prize in The Kathleen Ferrier Awards and collaborated with Bryn Terfel for a Royal Gala Concert at Buckingham Palace. Recent production credits include conducting Don Giovanni, Le Vin herbé (WNO); and A Christmas Carol (Teatro Comunale Bolzano).

Caroline Chaney

Revival Director

Caroline Chaney was born in Manchester and trained in ballet. After a degree course in education she worked as an actor and puppeteer. She then worked in floor management for the BBC, stage management for Welsh National Opera, The Royal Opera and Opera North, and company management for WNO and Glyndebourne before joining WNO full time as Staff Director. Recent revival directing credits at WNO include Don Giovanni, Eugene Onegin and Madam Butterfly.

Jurgita Adamonyt was born in Lithuania and graduated with a Master of Music diploma from the Lithuanian Academy of Music. She continued her studies at the Koninklijk Conservatorium, the Royal Academy of Music and the Cardiff International Academy of Voice. Adamonyt made her debut as Zerlina in Don Giovanni with the Lithuanian National Opera, and has since appeared at the Royal Opera House and at the Salzburger Festspiele. Recent stage credits include Meg Page in Falstaff (Festival Verdi), Ino in Semele (Garsington Opera) and Mélisande in Pelléas et Mélisande (Vilnius City Opera); forthcoming engagements include Stéphano in Roméo et Juliette (National Centre for the Performing Arts, Beijing).

Jacques Imbrailo

Pelléas

Jacques Imbrailo is from South Africa and studied at the Royal College of Music. He was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House and won the Audience Prize at the 2007 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition. Imbrailo performed the title role of Billy Budd at the Teatro Real in a new production by Deborah Warner and has performed the role of Pelléas in Switzerland, Belgium, Sweden, England and Wales. Christopher Purves

Golaud

Christopher Purves was born in Cambridge and studied at the city’s university as a choral scholar at King’s College. He went on to become a member of the experimental rock group Harvey and the Wallbangers. Purves created the role of The Protector in George Benjamin’s Written on Skin at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and that of Walt Disney in Phillip Glass’s The Perfect American at the Teatro Real. He has also sung the title role of Peter Grimes at the Edinburgh Festival and at the Teatro alla Scala. Recent stage credits include Dreieinigkeitsmoses in Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny (Opernhaus Zürich), Créon in Oedipe (Festival Enescu) and Captain Balstrode in Peter Grimes (Edinburgh International Festival).

利亞-瑪麗安.瓊斯

珍妮芙

Leah-Marian Jones

Geneviève

Leah-Marian Jones was born in Wales and studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and the National Opera Studio. She was a Company Principal at the Royal Opera House for eight years, during which she sang over 30 roles, and has sung the title role of Carmen for English National Opera. Jones has sung the roles of Flosshilde and Rossweisse from Wagner’s Ring in performances around the United Kingdom and France and has hosted her own television series on S4C. Recent stage credits include Marfa Ignat vna Kabanová in Kát'a Kabanova (Opéra national de Lorraine), Hyppolyta in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Teatro Massimo di Palermo) and Flosshilde in Das Rheingold (Hallé Orchestra).

Rebecca Bottone Yniold Rebecca Bottone was born in Bedfordshire and graduated from the Royal Academy of Music. She has created a number of roles in new operas, including First Innocent in Harrison Birtwistle’s Minotaur at the Royal Opera House and Marie in Rufus Wainwright’s Prima Donna at the Manchester International Festival. Bottone performed at the 2015 BBC Proms and featured on David Starkey’s television series Music and Monarchy. Recent stage credits include Giunia in Lucio Silla (Buxton International Festival), Yum-Yum in The Mikado (Scottish Opera) and Queen Tye in Akhnaten (English National Opera).

阿凱爾

Alfred Reiter Arkel Alfred Reiter was born in Augsburg and studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich. He sang the role of Titurel in Parsifal for three consecutive years at the Bayreuther Festspiele and made his debut at the Royal Opera House in the same role under Sir Simon Rattle. Reiter has also performed under Rattle’s baton at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and the Salzburger Festspiele, and under Jun Märkl as Fafner in Das Rheingold at the Wiener Staatsoper. His recent stage credits include La Roche in Capriccio (Oper Frankfurt); Herr Zenk in Der Mieter (Oper Frankfurt) and Il Commendatore in Don Giovanni (Stadttheater Giessen) Forthcoming engagements include Fasolt in Das Rheingold (Oper Frankfurt) and Dansker in Billy Budd (Oper Frankfurt).

Stephen Wells Doctor Stephen Wells studied in New Zealand and at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he won the Brigitte Fassbaender Lieder Prize. His teachers included Neil Howlett, Patrick McGuigan and Enid Hartle. Wells joined the WNO Chorus in 2009. Recent stage credits at the WNO include Footman in Der Rosenkavalier, Dug Hoël in Le Vin herbé and Un servo in Roberto Devereux.

Recognised as one of Hong Kong’s foremost chamber choirs and with regular invitations to collaborate from eminent artists and organisations locally and abroad, Die Konzertisten (DK) have appeared in recent HKAF programmes such as the 2017 Festival Finale opera, Bright Sheng’s Dream of the Red Chamber and Gluck’s dance-opera Iphigenia in Tauris with Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch in 2014. DK showcases some of the finest choral talent in Hong Kong while also representing the region’s musical community.
