WWI

When World War II began in 1939, the United States was behind the major European states in the advancement of tank technology. The fall of France ignited a change in American tank development, and the M4 Sherman was built with designs that emphasized speed and mobility. The tank entered active service in October 1942, and with the production of about 50,000 M4 Shermans, the Allies were able to win the ground war.
