Eighty years ago this spring, the USS North Carolina was commissioned – the first of two fast battleships in her own class. After briefly serving in the European Theater as a counter to a Tirpitz attack that never materialized, she was shipped to the Pacific where she rode out the duration of the war as a support vessel in the Guadalcanal, Eastern Solomons, and Philippine campaigns, among others.
