How to Get the Most out of Substance Abuse Rehab

Don't View It As Some Kind Of Punishment

★ Whether you went to rehab voluntarily, at the request of an employer or spouse, or even because the courts "suggested" that you go, remember that rehab is not a punishment. ★ It is a solution to a problem you are having. It is an opportunity. It is a gift that may save your life. Keeping this in mind will make your experience far more positive.

Don't Worry About What Is Going On Outside Of Rehab

★ Be present while you are at rehab. You are there to work on yourself, so let everything else go. ★ Don't worry about your relationships, leave behind any drama and make yourself and your recovery a priority. When you do that, everything else will fall into place.

Be Open Minded

★ Living in recovery is a whole new experience. You are used to doing things a certain way, and in rehab you will have to change your routine, and rethink much of what you know and are comfortable with. ★ Try to stay as open-minded as possible. It's not easy, but it will give you the opportunity to grow in new ways.

Be As Honest As Possible

★ This is essential to your success. You don't have to hide who you are or what you have done in rehab. ★ The people there aren't judging you, they want you to get better. Being honest allows you to get the help that you need. People can't help you if you aren't honest with them.

Don't Leave Treatment

You may be tempted to leave at some point. Perhaps you feel uncomfortable, or maybe you are having strong drug cravings. Or, maybe you are feeling wonderful, and don't have any urge to use. You're cured! Leaving early robs you of the full benefits of treatment, and increases your chances of relapse. Stay for the duration.
