Happening Around Town
It’ll be summer soon and many businesses in Charleston are dropping the mask mandate for those who have been vaccinated. That is a huge step toward normalcy, but it will be a while before crowd capacities will be as they were “preCOVID”. It still feels great to come to town and see our friends and neighbors! “Food Truck Friday” is the newest event to begin in downtown Charleston. It is in conjunction with the closure of Capitol Street during weekends for outdoor dining. “Live on the Levee” will begin in July. In the meantime, the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center (the CC&CC) has several events scheduled throughout the month. The “Monster Truck Jam”, the “WV Home Show”, “BrickUniverse LEGO Fan Festival”, and “Disney on Ice” are all coming to Charleston in June. “Mountain Stage” returns to the WV Culture Center for TWO shows. However, for now, they are seating at 25% capacity. Unfortunately, the first show this month is already sold out. Hopefully soon, with the restrictions easing up, subsequent performances will have bigger audiences. “Symphony Sunday” will be held at a different venue this year. It will be at the Appalachian Power Park and the audience will be seated in the stadium instead of everyone bringing their own chairs and quilts for picnics. Appalachian Power Park is
being utilized by different businesses and organizations. It is a great stadium in a prime location. It’s terrific that it can be enjoyed by the entire community. The WVSO plans to return to the University of Charleston lawn for the summer 2022 event. “FestivALL” is returning with some live performances and some virtual events. Many of the in-person concerts and exhibits will be held outdoors. Instead of the usual arts & crafts sales during FestivALL, artisans and vendors will be selling their goods at a booth located at the “FestivALL at the Capitol Market: Summer Art Fair”, from May 1 through July 11. This is a wonderful opportunity to support our local artists and crafters several weeks throughout the summer. The Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences is open during weekends, Friday-Sunday. Their capacity is limited & reservations are recommended, but not required. Their museums, planetarium, and theaters are open with special events for children. It has been a tough 15 months, adjusting to so much more than any of us could have ever imagined. But, there is light at the end of the tunnel and all of us will appreciate everything Charleston has to offer with even more gratitude and excitement! Have a great June!!!

... at Wine Cellar Park
Wine Cellar Park, also known as Dutch Hollow Wine Cellars, is located at 1101 Dutch Hollow Road in Dunbar. Not overly large, it is one of the more picturesque parks in the Kanawha Valley. A popular venue for outdoor weddings, the park provides a lovely backdrop of three brick arches framing the entrances to the cellars. Constructed in 1860 by vintner Tom Friend, the Dutch Hollow Wine Cellars served as storage for locally produced wine. They are the last known remnant of what was once a thriving industry in West Virginia. In the 1870s, West Virginia had a role in the business of producing wine. The state had warm and long enough summers to be a prime location for the growth of grapes. There were nearly 1,000 acres of vineyards in the state at that time, with around 700 acres in Ohio County alone. The crops of grapes from that county were valued at over $100,000 and shipped to Boston, Pittsburg, and New York. The type of grapes grown in Kanawha County varied but was likely to be primarily Concords. They were harvested, pressed, fermented, and casks set in the cool Dutch Hollow cellars to age. The barrels were then transported to Charleston by oxcarts and loaded onto steamboats that carried them to Cincinnati. After the Civil War ended, labor became more costly, and the production of grapes for wine didn’t remain profitable. By 1904, only one winery remained in West Virginia. The wine cellars in Dunbar were abandoned after only a few years of use. Then, the shipments of wine leaving Charleston were supplied from vineyards in Virginia and Ohio. The cellars were comprised of three separate but con-

nected vaults with barrel roofs. The measurements are roughly 40 feet wide and 19 feet high. The thickness of the walls varies from a little over a foot to over 3 feet. On the exterior, the center arch keystone has a wine cask in relief in the stone. In 1974, the cellars were purchased by the City of Dunbar to be included as part of the park. Now, Wine Cellar Park is a recreation destination. There are picnic shelters, a playground, and a walking trail. Laura Anderson Lake provides good fishing and beautiful scenery. The 7-acre lake is accessible to all who care to ‘wet a line.’ The lake was built by the city of Dunbar in 1984. According to the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the lake is an average of 18 feet deep with a maximum depth of 33 feet. The lake has channel catfish, largemouth bass, bluegill and is stocked with trout twice a year. Paths surround the lake providing easy fishing access or a short but pleasant hike in nature. In 2013, the inaugural tournament of a new disc golf course at the park was held. Seasoned Frisbee enthusiasts in attendance described the 9-hole course as ‘challenging.’ Dutch Hollow Wine Cellars was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Standing at the foot of a wooded hill in Dutch Hollow, they are a reminder of a long gone industry of the Kanawha Valley. Next month, Looking Back explores Charleston’s Coonskin Park.

Driving a little over three hours forty minutes southwest of Charleston brings you to Johnson City, Tennessee, a beautiful mountain town mentioned in the iconic 1970’s Wagon Wheel song by Old Crow Medicine Show. Johnson City often shies behind its bigger state counterparts, Nashville, Memphis, and Gatlinburg. Still, it is a fantastic weekend getaway with a vibrant downtown, a tasty food scene, and arguably the best beer in the state. Here are recommendations for your visit. 20 CharlestonHomeandLiving.com | JUNE 2021

The beer scene is alive and well in Johnson City, with nearly ten breweries, include Yee-Haw Brewing Co, one of the finest in the state. The taproom is comfy and welcoming, offering corn hole, games, and a massive fire pit. White Duck Taco Shop is next door so that you can enjoy delicious tacos and Mexican food with your beer experience. If cocktails are more your thing, the Windsor Speakeasy has a craft cocktail list with magical adult libation creations. Johnson City has a historic, walkable downtown area filled with locally-owned shops, eateries, coffee bars, a gaming store, and photogenic murals. Founders Park is a lovely five-acre green space with a walking path, lovely rotating art installments, and a water feature that adds the icing on the cake, but was designed for stormwater retention. lunch should be less crowded. Another option is Gourmet and Company, with the Appalachian Cobb Salad, a popular choice with chicken, Benton’s bacon, tomato, pickled eggs, and avocado. If you need something heartier, the Tuna Melt was the best I’ve ever had, nestled between cranberry raisin bread and topped with cheddar and provolone. Photo by Melody Pittman.
A unique attraction is the Gray Fossil Site & Museum, home to the ongoing dig site outback that has turned up hundreds of Miocene-early Pliocene era artifacts. At the same location is The Hands On! Discovery Center, an exciting science center with a climbing apparatus, musical Tesla coil, and many hands-on exhibits for kids.

You’ll be amazed at the sheer number of delicious dining spots around Johnson City. For breakfast, look no further than Pal’s Speedy Service, which you’ll see when you drive into town. Pal’s is the turquoise building with a hamburger, hot dog, fries, and shake jutting out from it. The kitschy eatery is also a good lunch or anytime option. Don’t miss the cheddar rounds. Java Juice House is another, with açaí bowls, fancy toasts, and great coffee and tea options.
Dinner options range from German to Indian, and one with an A+ for originality. At Freiburg’s, one of Johnson City’s international restaurants, try the German sausages or something more traditional like Schnitzel or Sauer Braten. For your Indian Fix, Sahib has all the favorites and impeccable service. Timber is themed after camping and National Parks, offering fried Brussels, succulent pork sandwiches, and a variety of vegetarian fare.

The room’s sleigh bed featured high-thread-count linens and all the amenities you could wish for.

Hopefully, you will be as bowled over by the fun, hospitality, and pride of Johnson City as I was. This is a city that is getting noticed and growing by leaps and bounds. If you still need more to do, consider a 17-minute drive over to Jonesborough, the oldest town in Tennessee. Happy travels.
