But conducting a yearly competitive scan is helpful when determining fundraising goals. It’s especially important for younger organizations with little historical data. Looking at the field is absolutely crucial to see what is possible. Think about the financial collapse in 2008 and the massive decline in donations that followed. It would have been crazy for any nonprofit to not factor in these national trends into planning after that. So how do you attempt to forecast donations you might ask? There are many different options but I would suggest using the Giving USA report which provides an unbiased look at philanthropic giving trends in the United States and makes predictions for future years…
