hat’s your style?”- Pulling it all together

Modern mix is all about finding what works for you. Each space and situation is unique. As an interior designer, I am often asked “what’s your style?” Style, which is defined by Webster’s dictionary as “the choice of arrangement” serves a different purpose when working in interior design. There’s a famous Miesian quote in the design industry that “form follows function”. I remind myself of this Mies quote quite often, as this design principle is truly a part of daily modern life.

Style must succeed both form and function. Once the client needs have been assessed, and a plan has been approved, I begin the furniture and finish selection. This is what most people recognize as “style”. Furniture, finishes, and colors must be appropriate for a space’s architectural composition. This, many times tells us which direction to take in selecting the elements that pull it all together. By understanding your wants and needs within your space, form will follow function, which is how a style evolves.

“Many times the design process begins long before there is even a job site.” We began looking at land with the clients in certain neighborhoods that would be a great place to raise a family. Once we picked the neighborhood and lot, everything came together. “When it comes to making a home feel like it’s uniquely yours, nothing beats new construction.” We worked with the client to learn what

was important to their family. This meant developing a functional architectural layout, maximizing square footage, and putting everything in just the right location. All of these decisions made early on, led to an efficient home that the family really enjoys.

Kitchen Update | Residential

Kitchen Update Hinsdale, IL “The difference is amazing. Everyone tells us how much they love the new kitchen.” It’s not always possible to completely re-design a kitchen. “There may be time and budgetary restrictions. Many times, a well planned update can deliver maximum results.” In this kitchen, for a busy family, there were architectural limitations. “There was a wall separating the kitchen from the family room. We took it out to connect the two rooms.” We decided to keep things simple, and start with squaring off the island to allow

for seating. “The homeowners wanted a place for the kids to do homework, and entertain friends. Squaring off the island, and adding stools made that possible.” We also painted the cabinets and installed new hardware. A large sink, along with vintage looking faucets, a basket weave backsplash, and new granite was added. We installed stainless steel appliances, plantation shutters, and re-stained the hardwood floors.

Geneva State Bank Geneva, IL “We planned for a fantastic coffee station, and a kids play area. The president of this suburban bank wanted us to create a warm and elegant bank where customers could help themselves to a gourmet cup of coffee, and kids could enjoy themselves in a comfortable play area. We planned for a fantastic coffee station, and a kids play area. Traffic flow, and positioning of reception areas, tellers, and personal banking areas worked in sync.

The coffee area was designed with practical finishes, including wipeable surfaces, and stain proof seating. A hand painted mural filled the walls of the play area, and work spaces were placed to allow for effective banking practices. Everything turned out great, and customers loved the concept.

PED Stores

Bolingbrook, IL Everyone loves an inviting and cheerful work environment... and the founder and president of PED stores wanted his PED plex to be just that. We worked with him to develop a relaxed work space. This was achieved by selecting a welcoming color scheme and furniture that blends with the company’s existing prairie-like setting.

“Dr. Kraff gave us clear direction on the details and color scheme he wanted for the facility. When it comes to healthcare facilities, there are usually specific needs reflective of the type of care given in the facility. We worked closely with Dr. Manus Kraff and his staff in designing a series of spaces that allowed him to effecitvely see patients in difference stages of the exam process. 14
