Illustrated Music A production from

HINCHILFFE

Thomas Hinchliffe

Illustrated music For this brief we were asked to come up with ways of promoting music by using illustration.

These were just a few of my initail ideas. I concentrated alot on the illustration as i thourght that the marketing side of this was a little too much out of my comfort zone. •It is almost always impossible to know what a song is about unless you are the writer so this is what I believe these songs are about.

Bon Iver Bon iver is a band consisting of a folk musicians yet their outcome is more than folk music it has a mystical vibe to it. sometimes its almost like a choir of monks. I wanted to keep my work solemn, well quite solemn. as the topics that are sung anout are often serious to the writer.

Skinny Love Come on skinny love just last the year Pour a little salt we were never here My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer I tell my love to wreck it all

Cut out all the ropes and let me fall My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Right in the moment this order’s tall I told you to be patient I told you to be fine I told you to be balanced I told you to be kind In the morning I’ll be with you But it will be a different “kind” I’ll be holding all the tickets And you’ll be owning all the fines Come on skinny love what happened here Suckle on the hope in lite brassiere My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Sullen load is full; so slow on the split

Who will love you? Who will fight? Who will fall far behind? Come on skinny love just last the year Pour a little salt we were never here My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer I tell my love to wreck it all Cut out all the ropes and let me fall My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Right in the moment this order’s tall Come on skinny love what happened here Suckle on the hope in lite brassiere My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my Sullen load is full; so slow on the split Who will love you? Who will fight? Who will fall far behind?

• His ‘skinny love’ means there is not much love, on the skinny side or maybe refering to his girlfriend, probably both. • He tells her to cut all the metaphorical strings that bond them and let him go. • I get the feeling that he has wasted his love, gave much but didn’t recieve it back Bon Iver’s music is gentle as the main man is a folk singer. There music is almost mystical yet you can still tell it is modern. I’ve tried to capture the feeling of the music with all of the tracks by listening over them whilst working.

Blood Bank Well, I met you at the blood bank We were looking at the bags Wondering if any of the colors Matched any of the names we knew on the tags You said, “See, look, that’s yours! Stacked on top with your brother’s See how the resemble one another Even in their plastic little covers” And I said I know it well That secret that you know But don’t know how to tell It fucks with your honor And it teases your head But you know that it’s good girl Because it’s running you with red Then the snow started falling We were stuck out in your car You were rubbing both of my hands Chewing on a candy bar You said, “Ain’t this just like the present To be showing up like this” As a moon waned to crescent We started to kiss And I said I know it well That secret that we know That we don’t know how to tell I’m in love with your honor I’m in love with your cheeks What’s that noise up the stairs, babe? Is that Christmas morning creaks? And I said I know it well I know it well . . .

• This songs meaning is clever as it doesn’t tell you what it is about. • They’re keeping something a secret. •It fucks with their honour but they know its good • You said, “Ain’t this just like the present to be showing up like this” ( a suprise) • The part that gives it away ‘What’s that noise up the stairs, babe? Is that Christmas morning creaks?’ (The sound of a child on christmas morning)

• I don’t feel I ever finished this but they are bonded with love and singing of the same hymn sheet ( the same patterns) • Only he knows

Nick Drake

Nick Drake was a shy and introspective man so when his album was released and only sold 3-4000 albums this made him question himself, resulting in him been a depressive. It is a shame people didn’t realise how good he was. The album artwork was done by his sister’s partner, Michael Trevithick. It is surreal with an sense of Dali. I kept all of this in my mind when drawing

Parasite Lifting the mask from a local clown Feeling down like him Seeing the light in a station bar And travelling far in sin Sailing downstairs to the Northern Line Watching the shine of the shoes Hearing the trials of the people there Who’s to care if they lose Take a look you may see me on the ground For I am the parasite of this town Dancing a jig in a church with chimes A sign of the times today Hearing no bell from the steeple tall People all in dismay Falling so far on a silver spoon Making the moon for fun Changing a rope for a size too small People all get hung Take a look you may see me coming through For I am the parasite who travels two by two ake a look you may see me on the ground For I am the parasite of this town And take a look you may see me in the dirt For I am the parasite who hangs from your skirt

• I thought this song gives itself away in the title ‘parasite. • He basically feels like he doesn’t belong and finds it hard to understand the world

Nick Drake seemed a lonely man through listening to his music. I choose to make my illustrations appear desolate and out of touch with the world we live in.

Pink Moon Saw it written and I saw it say Pink moon is on its way And none of you stand so tall Pink moon gonna get ye all And it’s a pink moon I saw it written and I saw it say Pink moon is on its way And none of you stand so tall Pink moon gonna get ye all And it’s a pink moon Yes, a pink moon

• If you replace ‘pink moon’ with death it makes alot more sense • An hour glass because time will ‘get ye all’

Jose Gonzalez Jose Gonzalez always has amazing animations for his music videos. He seems to always have spiritual references with in his videos. Andreas Nilsson is the director behind most of his videos and always seems to have an almost amature style but makes it work extremely well.

Hand On Your Heart Well it’s one thing to fall in love But another to make it last I thought that we were just beginning And now you say we’re in the past Look me in the eye and tell me we are really through You know it’s one thing to say you love me but another to mean it from the heart And if you don’t intend to see it through why did we ever start? I wanna hear you tell me you don’t want my love Put your hand on your heart and tell me it’s all over I won’t believe it till you put your hand on your heart and tell me that we’re through Put your hand on your heart They like to talk about for ever Most people never get the chance Do you wanna lose our love together Do you find a new romance I wanna hear you tell me you don’t want my love Look me in the eye and tell me we are really through Well it’s one thing to fall in love But another to make it last I thought that we were just beginning And now you say we’re in the past Look me in the eye and tell me we are really through You know it’s one thing to say you love me but another to mean it from the heart And if you don’t intend to see it through why did we ever start? I wanna hear you tell me you don’t want my love They like to talk about for ever Most people never get the chance Do you wanna lose our love together Do you find a new romance I wanna hear you tell me you don’t want my love

Jose Gonzales work to go with his work is always spiritual and almost tribal sometimes. I choose to do the hand as I did to make it spiritual, like ‘the hand of god’

• This is a song about trying to cling on to someone who doesn’t want you

• This song is about a catch 22 with drugs • They are destroying him but are also allowing him to be free • This was intended to be animated but got written off before that stage.

• I have tried with the help of tutorials to animate this in 3D and have itv moving in sync with the music. • This was taking up far too much time and decided that the 3rd year wasn’t the right time to throw myself into something new that seems so time comsuming. • This project has ended up been more on the T+P side of work trying to learn sound trap and lightwave.

Lemon Jelly

Lemon jelly have an extremely recognisable style to their albums. All of the artwork is done by Fred Deakin or at least done by his design studio, Airside. If you didn’t know Fred Deakin is also 50% of lemon jelly the other 50% been Nick Franglen. Everthing about lemon jelly is playful from the videos to the music. They’re playful with the samples they use and they’re playful with how their scenes inter link in their music videos.

In the bath What do you do, What do you do in the bath, Oh, What do you do in the bath, Oh, What do you do in the bath.

Lemon Jelly are literaaly playful with their music. This is why I like them and that’s the style I choose for them.

• I thought that pretty much anything went when it comes to the meaning of this song • I took it that nobody really knows what each other do in the bath.
