Protect Our Coast: No Offshore Drilling

Our Southern beaches are world famous destinations and our fisheries are among the most productive in the world. For 30 years, SELC has worked to protect our coastal resources and we remain a leading voice against opening the Southeast and new areas in the eastern Gulf of Mexico to offshore drilling.

Risks of Oil Drilling In early 2015, the federal government announced it was considering opening up the Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia coasts to offshore oil and gas drilling, a significant shift in federal policy that would jeopardize the communities, jobs, and beloved beaches that are the very heart of our coastal states. The possibility of drilling off the coast galvanized locals who knew the dangers it posed to the area’s economy and environment. Altogether, more than 100 communities up and down the coast passed resolutions opposing offshore drilling and the harmful seismic testing that precedes it. In response to the incredible opposition from coastal communities, in 2016 the federal government removed the Atlantic from its offshore leasing plan, protecting all that is special about the Southeast coast.

Coastal Riches The beautiful and biologically rich Southeast coastal areas and our Gulf Coast feature some of the most beloved places in the country, including the Chesapeake Bay, the Pamlico Sound, the ACE Basin, and Mobile Bay. Our coasts attract millions of tourists, anglers, and other visitors each year. Tourism and fishing – both commercial and recreational – are the economic backbone of hundreds of communities along our coasts.

Problematic Infrastructure The environmental impacts of offshore drilling and its accompanying infrastructure and refineries onshore were

well known even before the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Ocean rigs routinely spill and leak oil‚ and sometimes blow out. Even without a major spill, the industrialization and infrastructure associated with drilling – the rigs, refineries, pipelines, traffic, and routine spills and accidents – would irreparably change our coastal communities and economies.

Seismic Testing Even though they are closely related, offshore drilling is regulated separately from seismic testing, a process of using loud airguns to test the ocean floor for fuels. So despite the recent decision to protect the Southeast from offshore drilling, the oil and gas industry continues to push seismic testing and the federal government is currently considering applications for seismic testing in the Atlantic. Seismic testing is a means to one end: offshore oil and gas development, and it is widely opposed by residents, businesses, and local governments up and down the East Coast. There is absolutely no reason to allow seismic testing, harmful on its own, when the Atlantic coast has overwhelmingly rejected offshore drilling. SELC continues to work alongside coastal communities to ensure seismic testing does not move forward.

Not Worth the Risk The South has too much to lose and too little to gain by opening up the Southeast coast and eastern Gulf to offshore oil drilling. Instead SELC advocates increased energy efficiency and development of clean, renewable energy sources like offshore wind and solar.

Are you on vacation and trying to decide what to do now that you’ve spent a few too many hours in the sun? Would you like to enjoy the softer side of Myrtle Beach where you can be entertained rather than having to entertain? Stop by Duplin Winery and discover the slower pace of the south and relax with a glass of sweet, southern wine. But before you visit, we’d love to share our story with you. It’s a tale of two brothers, their families and what makes our sweet, southern Muscadine wine stand out from all others.

ow does one tell a story about a vineyard that unexpectedly grew into something far beyond the original expectations? In what way can we properly recount the memories and sacrifices of a family to be an inspiration to all, including future generations? By telling their story, from the beginning. In a small, rural town in North Carolina in the early 1970s, two brothers sat slowly rocking on their porch, pondering new ways to provide for their families. Those brothers, Dan and David Fussell Sr., decided to take a chance on growing Muscadine grapes after discovering a big city winery in New York would pay $350 for a ton of grapes. Teaming up with their father, known to all as Big D, they invested and put everything they had into building vineyards they hoped would produce the South’s sweetest grapes. Four years passed and just before the first harvest, the grape prices fell to less than half the original price. Dan and David now wondered with dismay, “what in the world are we country boys going to do with a bunch of grapes?” They decided to make wine! On The Beach 2017 33

With experimentation and determination, they taught themselves how to coax the sweet, natural flavor from the Muscadine grape. But now the brothers needed to find a way to bottle their wine and discovered the price of wine bottles was far too high for them to afford. Refusing to be discouraged, the brothers sauntered into their local hardware store in Rose Hill and headed straight for the owner. “We need a bunch a mason jars and some more sugar,” they declared. A mere 12 miles from Myrtle Beach, Conway is a jewel of “Americana.” Conway is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina. Originally named Kingston, the town was created in 1734 as part of Royal Governor Robert Johnson’s Township Scheme. It was laid out on a riverbluff in the center of what became Horry County.

Many area residents fought in the American Revolution and small engagements were fought near Kingston. Francis Marion, who was known as the Swamp Fox, had an encampment near Kingston just across the Waccamaw River.

After the war, patriotic citizens wanted to discard the name that honored Great Britain’s King George II. The County’s name was changed to Horry (pronounced O-Ree) in honor of General Peter Horry in 1801 and a courthouse was established in Kingston. Kingston’s name was later changed to Conwayborough for General Robert Conway. 76 76 On On The The Beach Beach 2014 2017

North Strand Bald Head Island Club was designed by George Cobb and opened for play in 1974. This beautiful private golf course in North Carolina is reachable by ferry from Southport, NC. The course was recently restored by Tim Cate, who breathed new life into course, making it much more natural looking and challenging. In addition to new Miniverde greens, new bunkers and a new irrigation system, Cate transformed 35 acres of rough into sandy areas with native grasses. Ocean Ridge Plantation is home to the award-winning Big Cats Courses of Grand Strand golf. Lion’s Paw Golf Links, designed by legendary architect Willard Byrd, is a links setting where big hardwoods frame generous, rolling fairways. The Grand Strand favorite was outfitted with MiniVerde™ ultra-dwarf greens in 2010, providing a premium putting surface for years to come. Lion’s Paw has been awarded four stars by Golf Digest. Winding its way through a pristine nature preserve, Panther’s Run Golf Links is a wild and scenic ride from start to finish. Rolling fairways and deep sand bunkers lurk throughout this gorgeous championship layout and the newly installed MiniVerde greens putt fast and true. Business NC Magazine ranked Panther’s Run Golf Links 4th among all coastal region courses in their “Best Bang for the Buck” category. Tiger’s Eye Golf Links is one of Tim Cate’s greatest creations and is a regular on Golf Digest’s list of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses”. The G2 bentgrass greens, native grasses and wildflowers along with unique elevation changes and coquina boulder bulkheads make Tiger’s Eye a very special golf experience. Tiger’s Eye was once again ranked in the Top 10 among GOLF Magazine’s Top Public courses State by State for 2014 and the par 3 11th hole at Tiger’s Eye Golf Links was listed on the NC Golf Panel’s “Dream 18,” a fantasy layout featuring the best golf holes in the state. Leopard’s Chase Golf Club opened to rave reviews in the spring of 2007. The 7100+ yard layout features TifSport Bermuda fairways and perfectly manicured L-93 bentgrass greens. The level of detail for this spectacular layout with its natural elevations, scenic landscapes, native grasses and that beautiful white coastal sand used for the waste areas, creates a series of flowing, picturesque holes unlike anything in the area. GolfWeek Magazine ranked Leopard’s Chase #8 in NC on their list of “The Best Courses You Can Play- State by State” for 2014. The Thistle Golf Club is a 27-hole Tim Cate design. The course and clubhouse were inspired by an ancient Scottish golf society called Thistle Golf Club. Documents and artifacts from the old club are on display in the clubhouse. The course features three nines that present expansive vistas with wide fairways and generous green complexes. The openness provides ample room off the tee and invites the prevailing ocean breeze. Stacked sod bunkers and the surrounding vegetation create strong resemblances to the great links courses of Scotland. For over twenty years Oyster Bay has been a favorite of Myrtle Beach golfers. Oyster Bay is a rare, harmonious blend of the penal, heroic and strategic philosophies of golf course architecture. A course where variety and innovation are the name of the OnTheGreenMagazine.com

MYRTLE BEACH GOLF game. Golf Digest has repeatedly rated Oyster Bay HHHH 1/2 stars and ranked it the “Best New Resort Course of the Year.” The clubhouse has been renovated and upgraded to enhance guests’ experience. Colonial Charters Golf & Country Club features a number of memorable holes defined by mature hardwoods and strategically placed water hazards. The 6,427 yard layout features two iconic green-side waterfalls and tree-lined fairways. Long Bay Club is a unique Jack Nicklaus Signature Course with Champion UltraDwarf Bermuda greens, deep pot bunkers, vast waste areas and mounding along the fairways. Close by, Aberdeen Country Club is a 27-hole course designed by Tom Jackson that features Tif-Eagle Bermuda greens on three, 9-hole layouts with a Scottish theme in different natural settings. River Hills Golf & Country Club is a Tom Jackson parkland-style design blending modern and traditional elements. The fairways of this 18-hole course make their way through a picturesque, heavily-wooded terrain but its rolling hills are River Hills’ signature feature. Eagle Nest Golf Club acts as much as a wildlife preserve as a golf course. The 18-hole layout was designed by renowned architect Gene Hamm, a Carolina native who has a reputation for carving classics out of diverse terrain. Opened in 1971, Eagle Nest has undergone several facelifts over the years, including a complete makeover of the layout and clubhouse in 2001. The crown jewels of the Glens Golf Group collection are located on opposite sides of Highway 17 near Little River. Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links was named a “Top 10” Myrtle Beach area course by Golf Digest. Glen Dornoch features big Bermuda greens with bump-and-run fringes and spectacular finishing holes on both nines that overlook the Intracoastal Waterway. Heather Glen Golf Links offers 27 holes designed by Johnston and Willard Byrd. Acclaimed as “America’s Best New Public Course” in 1987 by Golf Digest, the three Scottish-inspired nines are set in a virtual nature preserve of old growth oaks and waterfowl habitat. A complete Glens Golf package features significant discounts for both golf and accommodations. With its unrivaled vistas, award winning layout, and showcase of southern elegance and charm, the legendary Tidewater Golf Club offers the perfect combination of natural beauty and challenging play. October 2014 marked the unveiling of Tidewater’s brand new, completely restored Mini Verde greens. During the extensive greens replacement process, Tidewater also completed fairway expansions, removal of over 400 trees, sod replacement on all green surrounds, as well numerous additional restoration projects-all to insure that the Tidewater golfer enjoys a golf experience second to none. Possum Trot Golf Club is a Glens Golf Group course designed by architect Russell Breeden. Great Tifdwarf Bermuda greens and generous fairways ensure a fun-for-all round at Possum Trot, which is also home to one of the area’s largest practice facilities at the on-site Glens Golf Academy. With names like Tom Fazio, Davis Love III, Greg Norman and Pete Dye, golfers know that they will be treated to some of the finest golf architecture in the world. On April 13, 2000 Barefoot successfully opened four championship courses simultaneously, making it the only time a developer has opened four new courses at the same time in the United States. The Norman Course is a southwestern style design with vast waste areas and several eye-opening holes along the Intracoastal Waterway. The Love Course was Davis Love III breakout design. It is a matchless creation that has elevated greens and generous fairways. The course has its own faux ruins of an antebellum plantation. The Fazio Course is a design that will delight all skill levels of golfers and is a terrific test of your game. It features undisturbed wetlands, native flowers and plants. You will also enjoy an abundance of wildlife. The Dye Course is the Pete Dye centerpiece of Barefoot’s semi-private club and offers a variety of bunkers, waste areas and Dye’s signature bulkheads. Each golf course has received national acclaim by all of the major golf publications. They include: Myrtle Beach’s #1 Golf Course ranking and “Americas Top 100 Public Courses” by Golf Digest, “Top 15 You Can Play in SC” by Golfweek and holds the distinction of being named both the Myrtle Beach and SC state “Golf Course of the Year”. Featuring all-inclusive golf packages with premium resort-style amenities, a state of the art lighted driving range, short game practice facility, full service restaurant and bar, everything you need can be found at the resort or just a short drive away. All this and more is conveniently located within minutes of fine dining, entertainment, shopping and the wide beaches of North Myrtle Beach. Let them help make your vacation one to remember. The Dunes Golf & Beach Club is a private club that was designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1948. It is only available to guests of members and to guests of certain hotels in Myrtle Beach. “Waterloo”, hole 13, is a legendary hole where Lake Singleton comes into play. “Waterloo” is recognized as one of the greatest golf holes in the world. Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club was the “Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year” in 2009. This Glens Golf Group course by architect Clyde Johnston was recently rennovated to include huge waste bunkers and new tee boxes. A traditional parkland-style design with meandering fairways in an expansive rural setting, the elevated A-1 bentgrass greens at Shaftesbury are beautifully conditioned and considered by local players to be the region’s best. Complete Glens Golf packages include discounted greens fees at this modern Grand Strand classic. Grande Dunes Resort Club was named one of the “Top 100 Public Golf Courses” in America by Golf Digest Magazine in 20112012. The Resort Club was also awarded “Course of the Year” by the National Golf Course Owners Association in 2009. Golf at Grande Dunes Resort Club feels completely natural yet effortlessly refined. The expansive Bermuda grass fairways ripple with subtle undulations onto large, modestly contoured Champion UltraDwarf Bermuda greens. The superior design unfolds itself 90 On The Beach 2017

MYRTLE BEACH GOLF in a relaxed, gracious manner enticing golfers with beauty while taunting them with danger. Myrtlewood Golf Club offers golfers a choice of two 18-hole layouts conveniently located in the heart of Myrtle Beach. The Palmetto Course is a traditional design with fairways that gently twist and turn their way towards large, TifDwarf greens. The eighteenth offers a dramatic finish along the Intracoastal Waterway. The Palmetto Course was honored by Golf Magazine as the “Local’s Favorite Course”- 2005. In contrast, the PineHills Course is a modern classic designed by Arthur Hills. Contoured fairways and undulating greens provide an excellent test of golf, one you’re sure to enjoy. PineHills was honored by Golf Digest as a “Top Ten Course” in Myrtle Beach. Pine Lakes Country Club has been an icon in the Myrtle Beach golf scene since 1927, and is also referred to as “The Granddaddy.” After an extensive renovation to the golf course and clubhouse, you can now experience The Granddaddy as it was in the spirit of the 1920s. Many of the historical golf holes were maintained while twelve new holes were created to improve the golf experience that visitors have come to associate with Pine Lakes. The creation of an extraordinary, four-star design golf club, true to the classic architecture of Pine Lakes, has achieved a dynamic expansion, historical restoration and full blossoming of this prominent facility. Arrowhead Country Club is one of Myrtle Beach’s premier 27-Hole golf complexes. With a canvas of 419 Bermuda grass fairways and MiniVerde Bermuda grass greens, the team of Ray Floyd and Tom Jackson have created a 27-hole masterpiece along the scenic Intracoastal Waterway. Arrowhead features three unique 9-hole tracts: The Waterway, The Cypress and The Lakes, each one with a feel all its own. Arrowhead is conveniently located five minutes from the Airport and within fifteen minutes of downtown Myrtle Beach. Ask about the seasonal special where you can play all 27 for the 18 hole rate! Wild Wing Plantation is home to the award-winning 18-hole Avocet Course and the 9-hole Hummingbird Course. Designed by U.S. Open and two-time PGA Champion Larry Nelson, the Avocet features unique greenside mounding, extensive fairways and green contouring, and an imaginative routing plan that includes several double fairways and a double green. The course also features exceptional MiniVerde Bermuda greens. Wild Wing was named “Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year” and “South Carolina Golf Course of the Year” in 2002. Wild Wing Plantation has recently won awards from Golf Digest “Best Places to Play” (2008-2009) with a four-star course rating on both the Avocet and Hummingbird courses. Wild Wing also won a Zagat survey award for “America’s Top Golf Courses” (2009/2010). Wild Wing uses the “Single Tee” method to start players on both courses so there is no delay at the turn. Myrtle Beach National Golf Club is home to three Founders Collection Courses including: SouthCreek, West Course, and the renowned King’s North. Arnold Palmer, along with Francis Duane, designed all three layouts: King’s North, opened in 1973 and totally refurbished in 1996, was most recently honored by OnTheGreenMagazine.com

MYRTLE BEACH GOLF inclusion on the Golf Digest list of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses 2007-2008.” The North’s Champion UltraDwarf Bermuda greens are superb and “The Gambler” is one of golf’s best risk-reward holes. SouthCreek was named among America’s “Top 100” by Golf For Women in 2002-2003 and features Champion Bermuda greens on a shotmaker’s layout. The West Course sports Champion Bermuda greens as well, in a parklandstyle design with minimal rough. World Tour Golf Links is a truly unique facility with designs inspired by famous courses like Augusta National, Doral, Pinehurst, Pine Valley, St. Andrews and Winged Foot. Named “National Golf Course of the Year” for 2004 by the National Golf Course Owners Association, World Tour’s new Mini-Verda Ultra Dwarf greens are well-conditioned, bronze plaques on each tee box describe the hole’s historic significance and the clubhouse features a golf “Hall of Fame”. Burning Ridge Golf Club, located on Highway 501, is the proud recipient of the 2006 Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year award and the 2006 South Carolina Golf Course of the Year award. Encounter elegantly shaped mounded fairways and large yawning bunkers before reaching smooth putting surfaces.

Legends Resort is one of the Grand Strands finest stay and play facilities. Legends guests enjoy two and three bedroom golf villas, a lighted 30-acre practice facility and an onsite Scottish tavern, the Ailsa Pub. The resort is home to three award- winning courses. The Heathland is a Tom Doak gem where the natural contours of the land dictate the flow of the course. This links course’s windswept hills and deep-faced bunkers are just a few of the challenges that await each player. The greens were recently renovated and Champion Bermuda is the new putting surface. The Moorland is a P.B. Dye design and was recently named by Golf Digest as one of the “Fifty Toughest Courses in America” at #37. It remains one of the most unique courses on the East Coast. Dye’s panache for multilevel fairways and greens and signature bulkheads has transformed this land into one of Myrtle Beach’s most requested courses. Moorland was voted “2014 Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year” and was ranked #6 in GolfWeek’s “Best Courses You Can Play in SC.” Moorland was also named the 84th Best Resort Course in America in GolfWeek’s Top 100

Resort & Residential Courses in America. The Legends Parkland stands on its own merits. The Parkland is modeled after the style of architects Alister MacKenzie (Augusta National) and George Thomas (Riviera Country Club) and was designed to compliment nature so closely as to make the layout indistinguishable from nature itself. Enjoy tree-lined fairways, vast natural areas, substantial undulating greens and experience a day of exceptional golf. All three of the Legends courses have been awarded HHHH 1/2 stars 94 On The Beach 2017

from Golf Digest. All three of the courses were named winners of the Myrtle Beach Chamber’s ‘People’s Choice Award for Best Golf Course.’

South Strand Voted the 2004-2005 Golf Course of the year, golfers playing Indian Wells Golf Club continue to rave about the appearance and layout which reminds many of a traditional US Open style course. Indian Wells is a course that places a premium on creative shot making and rewards the OnTheGreenMagazine.com

daring. After your round, enjoy the relaxing clubhouse and outdoor patio overlooking the 10th tee while being served by the past winners of the coveted “Myrtle Beach Golf News’ Hospitality and Operational Excellence Award.” The Tournament Players Club of Myrtle Beach was designed by acclaimed architect Tom Fazio, and has been a host of the Senior Tour Championship. Enjoy perfectly groomed fairways and greens and venture forth through towering pines and expansive wetlands. TPC Myrtle Beach was awarded Five Stars by Golf Digest. It is the only course on the Grand Strand to receive such an honor. Recently the course greens were replaced with MiniVerde Ultradwarf – the same type of grass that the PGA Tour used in its renovation of the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. The greenside bunkers have been refurbished with new drainage and sand. The Tradition Golf Club is a championship course that boasts the proud traditions of the great courses that have stood the test of time. Amenities abound at the Tradition, from comfortable dining to the elaborate practice facility. The Tradition was awarded four and 1/2 Stars in Golf Digest’s Places to Play 2008. Three of the South Strand’s premier layouts are Founders Collection Courses that are also near the oceanfront Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort. Architect Tom Jackson built River Club Golf Course around a network of spring-fed ponds and added more than 100 bunkers, but the immaculate Champion Bermuda greens are River Club’s most outstanding feature. The semi-private Litchfield Country Club offers limited public play on its Willard Byrd designed course with plenty of doglegs and fine TifDwarf Bermuda greens. Set among the former ricefields of two historic plantations, Willbrook Plantation Golf Club is a Dan Maples creation with Champion Ultradwarf Bermuda greens that was named on Golf For Women’s “Top 50” list in 2010. Built on two of South Carolina’s historic plantations along the scenic Waccamaw River, the Heritage Club is a favorite of Grand Strand golfers. Over 600 acres of giant magnolias, freshwater lakes and marshes have been transformed into a

MYRTLE BEACH GOLF golf course that rivals any course in the Southeast. Honored by Golf Digest as 46th among the “Top 100 Public Golf Courses in America” for 2007-2008 and rated HHHH 1/2 stars in “Places to Play,” the Heritage Club is a mixture of pure Southern charm and hospitality. Heritage Club was ranked #7 in GolfWeek’s “Best Courses You Can Play in SC.”

Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and True Blue Golf Club were both ranked in Golf Magazine’s “2014 Top 100 Courses You Can Play” list. True Blue is known as a dramatic, fun layout with vast fairways, undulating greens and impressive elevation changes. The rolling terrain and native vegetation of this former indigo and rice plantation make for a spectacular setting. Caledonia has been recognized for its design and incredible beauty. Caledonia is annually ranked on all major golf publications “Top 100” lists. The courses are land adjacent in Pawleys Island. Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club, a Nicklaus Signature course, features a classic Lowcountry design that you can play over and over and never have the same shot twice. With subtle greens enveloped by sand bunkers, challenging fairways dotted with water and unique obstacles evident on every hole, this is a player’s course that demands strategy, ingenuity and concentration. Pawleys Plantation was ranked by Golf Digest among South Carolina’s “Top 25 Layouts” in 2001. Golf Digest has further awarded Pawleys Plantation four and 1/2 stars in its “Best Places to Play.” Other accolades include Golf For Women’s “Top 10 Women Friendly Courses in America” 1999 and Travel & Leisure Golf’s “4-Star Golf” in 2001.

Founders Club at Pawleys Island was voted 2011 Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year by the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association. This course features impressive elevation changes, fairways defined by mounds with pot bunkers, and square “island” tee boxes set inside massive waste bunkers. Its elevated greens are the only ones on the Grand Strand grassed with the new heattolerant Emerald Bermuda that enables the greenskeeper to keep the undulating putting surfaces tight, fast and smooth in any weather.
