01 Net-zero urban intervention Documentation | Survey | Analysis | Architecture | Urbanisim Site: Cedar Rapids Fall 2017 Team member: Erin Copeland Faculty: Ulrike Passe

The project was a design competition entry for COTE 2018. As the increasing demand of the growing population is intensifying the pressure on our ecosystems and natural resources, we are forced to alter our traditional framing techniques to practices such as using nitrogen based fertilizers to increase crop yield. Iowa, who devotes 89% of its land to farming, suffers from issues such as degrading water quality standards and irrecoverable soil depletion due to the rate of chemical run off. The project seeks to place intervention in the system for managing resource resiliency by incorporating an aquaponic, greenhouse, production center, market, and residential unit within the city of downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This program forms a closed loop system in an urban fabric that allows Iowa to maintain its rank as a top farming state while reducing its impact on environment, and providing a basic need for surrounding community members.

Dye-sensitized solar panels on the horizontal and vertical facade diffuse harsh summer solar heat gain

Unlike traditional farming aquaponics get its water source from below, allowing for the system to reuse grey water without contaminating the edible part of plant

Dye- sensitized solar panels produce a red glow from the diffused sunlight that expedites the photosynthesis process in the plant grow beds

02 Development of religious precinct and waterfront

In the context of Hindu mythology, Indian rivers have been holding great religious importance, signifying the cycle of birth and death constantly. Moreover, the place itself with an attached sacred value brings the people to inhabit in its context as settlements. The relationship of the geography of the place and its various association leads to the human construct. These constructs brings about religious idea in the making of the town.

Documentation | Survey | Analysis | Many beliefs and importance is expressed in the built forms and archetypes of religious architecture. Built forms like Ghats and Architecture | Urbanisim Temples become very strong feature in the river towns. They build a Site: Chandod, Gujarat, India universal relation between river and people. In some Indian towns, this Year: 2016 relation is so strong that it goes beyond the edge of the river and Team member: Individual penetrates into the fabric of the settlement. One such town is Faculty: Advaita Jhalan Chandod, Gujarat, India know for after death rituals.

Architecture for the Public Domain is emphasized through detailed analysis and study of a town and its parts. The objective was to design a solution for a project in the urban Development of fabric selected within a given town, which is part of AVKUDA (Anand Vidhyanagar Urban Development Authority). degraded ravine AVKUDA is promoting a planned & controlled urban Documentation | Survey | Analysis | development in the developing areas of Anand, Vallabh Architecture | Urbanisim Vidhyanagar and Karamsad of Gujarat, India. Currently, 34 Site: Vasad, Gujarat, India villages and 3 Municipalities are covered in AVKUDA. It was Year: 2016 divided into 7 areas between different groups of 6 students Team member: Analysis and documentation to gained understanding about dealing with complex issues of any city, town or a place and suggest appropriate solution (Group of 6); urban insertion ( Individual) for it by using Transect Study as a tool.

The emphasis of the project was to create a housing proposal for the dierent user groups, communities and age groups at Diu. Diu is mostly known as a tourist destination so most of the user groups would be present for a short period of time during the year but there are local community requirements which need to be addressed as well. These consist of various types of housing such as serviced/ studio apartments, pensioner's apartments and individual dwellings for both tourist and local users. Diu also has lot of history and a dierent identity which shall become the essence of the proposal.

Since project involved wide range of typologies and user group, the main concept was to maintain serenity and capture maximum view of the sea. This was achieved through peripheral access to the site . The spatial arrangement was done in such a away that there were large number of deďŹ ned landscape pockets which can be used as evening leisure space by children and elders. Various recreational spaces like cafeteria, library and gym were also provided.

As a part of sfera blu, Ahmedabad. I worked simultaneously on 3 projects, which involved architecture as well as interior design project. Neonz Resort and Spa was divided in 3 phases, I was involved with schematic conceptual drawings, followed by working drawings along with electrical layout, door window details, client meetings and on-site visits for water chalets which was the residential zone of the resort.
