What an incredible time to be in the cattle business! Our cowherd has been built over 49 years and is continually improving. It is also continually staying true to cows that breed back, stay sound and raise a strapping calf, year after year, well into their teens. Herd longevity is one of the most economically important traits in cow/calf operations. Over the past 20 years the stayability trait of our Hillview herd has been an average of 37%, and up to 76%, higher than that of the Canadian Limousin Association herdbook average. Females that truly work in every way stay the course, and our cows work. We have worked diligently to select sires with intention and utilize those genetics strategically to produce bulls and females that will suit the various needs of our customers.
The 2026 sale marks 49 years raising registered Limousin seedstock, 40 years of bull sales and our 10th on-farm sale. Sincere thanks to all who have supported us throughout the years. We are tremendously grateful to each and every operation who chooses genetics from our program – we do not take this decision for granted as we know selecting sires for your herd is the single most important investment you are making to impact your herd and your bottom line for years to come. If you are in the market for a calving ease bull to breed your heifers you will be spoiled for choice in both the two year old and yearling bull groups. A phenomenal selection of performance geared bulls can also be found throughout both the yearling and two year old pens. We are extremely excited about the Martens Lieutenant 16L ET sons we have selected for the sale. These will be the first Martens Lieutenant 16L ET sons to sell at public auction, and a number of them at that as well as a heifer. We are exceptionally pleased with how Lieutenant crossed on our cow herd. The quality is very deep all the way through the sale offering. Many of our tried and true herd sires are represented. We are highly confident in all aspects of these reliable sires that we have been using for years and have numerous progeny working in herds across the country. Martens Kobe 6K progeny generated a lot of excitement and made a lot of friends in our 2025 sale. We have selected a top group of yearling bulls and one more heifer to offer this year. The Kobe daughters we calved out this year are fantastic in every way. The two year old bulls forage a large grass pasture all summer and fall and come in hardened, fit and ready to be grown out slow and steady for many years of breeding ahead. They will get ground and females covered. We have homozygous polled tested and will share those results online as soon as we receive them and will include them on the supplement sheet on sale day.
As photos and videos were taken in early January, we are confident you will find the cattle to be far better in person now, and even more impressive when they are delivered to you as they continue to develop on the same slow TMR ration they are grown on through to delivery. This year marks the milestone of 40 years of selling bulls in a public auction format and 10 years of hosting the sale at our ranch. It is also Raymond’s 70th birthday and oldest daughter Marissa’s 40th birthday within days of the sale so sale day will be a real celebration! BULL DEVELOPMENT Our feeding program is built to maximize forage utilization and gut health. Forages are sampled and analyzed to ensure quality. The bulls have been summered on grass, and wintered on a forage-based TMR that matches suitable protein sources to proper starch to develop and express their genetic potential and promote lean muscle growth. Organic minerals are used to ensure proper immune function and overall health. Throughout the fall and first part of winter they are fed in the field, for maximum exercise. They will continue on the same feeding program post-sale. They have been responsibly developed slowly for longevity in commercial conditions. HERD HEALTH Hillview Farms is on a complete herd health vaccination program. Calves receive Bovi-Sheild Gold One Shot and Vision 8 Somnus + Spur before they go to pasture and are boostered pre-weaning with the same two vaccines. The coming two year old bulls are also boostered in the fall. Breeding females receive Covexin Plus, Vira Shield 6 + VL5 HB and Scour Bos. Every animal also receives Solmectin in the fall and CyLence in the winter. All bulls have been scrotal measured, semen tested, and inspected by a veterinarian prior to sale. A copy of the test results will be provided to the buyer. Weights, scrotal measurements and homozygous polled results (where applicable) will be available prior to sale day. Heifers will be palpated by a veterinarian prior to sale.
