A HANDSOME COUNTRY TOWN IN A DEEP VALLEY, YOUNG OFFERS THE FULL URBAN EXPERIENCE, WITH COMFY ACCOMMODATION, AWARD-WINNING CAFÉS AND BOUTIQUES SET AMONG GRAND 19TH CENTURY BUILDINGS. Prior to European settlement, a family group of the indigenous Wiradjuri Nation, the Burrowmunditroy people, lived in the region. Burrangong Station was established in 1826 by James White, the first European settler to the area. Gold was first discovered in 1860 and saw an influx of immigrants from Europe and China, all seeking their fortunes. Exminers from Croatia planted Australia’s first commercial cherry crop and today, Young is known as the ‘Cherry Capital’ of Australia. Visiting Young in Spring is reminiscent of a European landscape with patterned olive groves and blossoming cherries, plums, apricots and almonds.
