Opportunities for giving abound this season

or those who believe the true spirit of Christmas is in giving, the Dripping Springs community offers several opportunities to share the joy of the season. Helping Hands, the Hays County Sheriff’s office, and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul gather donations to provide food, toys and gifts for local families in need during the holidays.

Helping Hands’ Elf Project has been helping local families during the Christmas season for more than 25 years, providing toys, clothing and books for children who otherwise might go without this time of year. Head Elf Jacquie Pinholster coordinates a crew of about 40 helpers that will distribute more than 1,800 gifts on December 20, in time to help create a happy holiday for many families in the Dripping Springs Independent School District area.

Beginning in September each year, Jacquie explains, Elf Project volunteers accept requests from parents for help with Christmas. Information listing each child’s age, gender and special gift requests is printed onto paper “mittens” that decorate evergreen trees located at 25 churches, businesses and schools around Dripping Springs from November through December 12.

Each child receives one toy and one clothing request, along with a book. Community members are encouraged to select a mitten from a tree and purchase the requested item ($30 spending limit). The Elf Project also seeks new or gently used children’s books and cash donations, which are used to purchase requested items.

The North Pole is abuzz with activity December 15-20, as volunteers busily sort all the donated gifts by family and child, ready for the joyful pickup on December 20. Help of all kinds — including sorting, stacking, shopping, wrapping and cleanup — is needed and welcomed by the crew of volunteers.

Helping Hands, Inc., with a motto of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors,” also sponsors a twice-weekly food pantry in Dripping Springs and a yearly school supply drive, “Stuff the Bus.” Their sole fundraiser is the Empty Bowl Project at Sunset Canyon Pottery each November.

The Hays County Brown Santa program, run by volunteers from the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, accepts donations of toys, canned goods and money from local businesses and citizens to assist families in need in Hays County.

Dripping Springs residents can donate locally at the Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace’s office at 195 Roger Hanks Parkway.

Brown Santa accepts new toys for children up to the age of 16. Gift-wrapped toys should have a tag identifying the toy, along with the appropriate age and gender of a recipient. Unwrapped toys are accepted through December 12; wrapped gifts through December 15. The Sheriff’s department will arrange pick up for donations, if convenient.

All toys will be wrapped on December 13, 2014 from 9 am to noon. Children are welcome in the warehouse to help out!

Deputies and helpers will deliver toys and food Saturday December 20 from 7 am until approximately noon. Any family requesting assistance from Brown Santa can sign up at the Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace’s office by December 11 at 5 pm.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Dripping Springs provides toys, clothes and HEB gift cards to needy families in the north Hays County area. Volunteers accept requests for assistance, and the names of recipients are written on paper ornaments that are taken by donors, who then do the shopping (two gifts per child, $30 limit). The fifth grade class at St. Martin’s also makes Christmas cards for the families.

The cost for the Winter Wonderland Art Camp is $49 for one day, $90 for both days (plus $5 an hour for aftercare). Extended care will include a wintertime-themed movie and more crafts.

December 29-30, kids can enjoy Art Around the World Art Camp. Students can learn about art and cultures from all around the world as they create batiks, Native American dream-catchers, and paint a ceramic Chinese dragon. Along with those projects, campers can look forward to learning Japanese origami, painting canvas and drawing. Art Around the World Art Camp funs from 10 am to 2 pm ( with the option to extend until 6 pm). t’s served as everything from a post office to a brothel, with a short stint as an army barracks (though which war that was for is not clearly remembered now).

Over more than 150 years, the small frame building that forms the core of the now-rambling structure housing both 290 West Bar and Grill and Robin’s Grill in Cedar Valley has been moved, had the county line shift back and forth beneath it, been added to and has even purportedly been haunted by a ghost.

And today, the old structure has melded with later additions so that the original lines are barely traceable in the beadboard ceiling.

Owner James Faron points to a faint yellow line along the ceiling that once marked the county line.

“You could buy your beer on that side of the line,” he says, indicating the bar on the far side of the room, “but you had to walk over here to drink it.”

When Faron (as everyone calls him) was cleaning up the building before opening his 290 West Bar and Grill 12 years ago, he found a layer of robin’s egg blue paint beneath other paint on the ceiling.

That, he contends, hails from the building’s days as The Blue Goose, a notorious bar and brothel run by Amanda Hudson and “her girls.”

To conduct her business, Amanda had small concrete rooms constructed along the outside of the building. “I saw remnants of those,” Faron recalls.

“In fact, those were knocked down just a few years ago.”

What has remained, he believes, is a ghost. Several bartenders have seen it, Faron claims, including himself.

“I was standing at the bar at closing time one night, and felt a strange charge,

It was short and wearing a woolen hat. I ran towards it, yelling, but it avoided me and then floated right through this wall!” he gestures towards the rear of the bar.

The bartenders regularly find that a certain locked door has come open, a favorite trick of the ghost, Faron believes.

obin’s 290 Grill advertises food “just like your mama’s,” but more precisely, owner and cook Robin Collins makes comfort food just like her grandmother in Jonesboro, Arkansas, made for her when she was a child.

“My earliest memory is of my grandmother giving me pieces of biscuit dough to shape,” Robin recalls with obvious fondness. Robin’s own biscuit recipe—along with her pot roast, cobbler (with dough that rises through the fruit, in true Southern style), and many other recipes—are straight from her grandmother’s kitchen.

Robin’s food may be familiar, but not common. Her burgers are hand-patted, her salad dressings all homemade, her lasagna a three-day process. Then, there are the little specialities of her own concoction, like Bacon Cheddar Biscuit Bites with fresh homemade strawberry jam,that she uses to really “wow” her customers.

When the former mortgage broker tired of the craziness of that business in 2011, she first thought of opening a food trailer. But instead, she talked James Faron into leasing his (unused) kitchen at The 290 West Bar and Grill to her during the hours before his bar opened, piggy-backing two separate businesses into a single venue. Robin’s 290 Grill serves breakfast and lunch. After she closes around 2 pm, The 290 West Bar and Grill takes over the facility for drinks and evening entertainment.

The benefits are mutual. Breakfast diners can have a Bloody Mary or mimosa with their morning meal. Old-timers from the area tend to gather for Tuesday lunch, and then spend the afternoon playing dominoes, drinking beer and reminiscing about old days in Dripping Springs.

During the month of December, Robin transforms the dancehall in the building into a Winter Wonderland especially for a dinner she caters for a corporate Christmas party, and then leaves the decorations up for other events/parties/nights during the remainder of the month. When the bar goes to no-smoking in January, Robin plans to begin a once-a-week evening meal.

Along a back wall, sliding barn doors open to reveal a 3,000-square-foot dancehall, complete with bandstand for live music, a large dance floor and the “Chicken Coop” table seating area along one side, perfect for private parties.

In good weather, large doors along the sides slide up to open the dancehall to a large patio and grassy yard beyond.

Every Friday evening (and some Sat-

urdays) live bands play for crowds of dancers and listeners, with never a cover charge, says Faron. Wednesday nights, there are pool tournaments, with karaoke on Thursdays, he adds. And beginning in January 2015, smoking will be limited to a small area outside.

“That’s been a hard sell,” he admits, “but I’m sticking to it. I think lots of people will appreciate the change.”
