Bush fires By Tiffany Sarich

• There have been many bush fires in cities, states in the past couple of years all over Australia. The most popular state is Victoria in march 1942 people lost 20 homes and 2 farms and more recently black Saturday happened. • Bush fires can be very dangerous and a lot of people can die because they can not escape because the fire is all around them and traps them. • There have not been many Bush fires in Perth and down south but we have seen them in the past , not as bad as some in the Eastern States though.

How many bush fires have been in Australia over the past 12 hours • Over the past 12 hours there have been 42 bush fires in Australia. See map below from Spatial Genie.

Where the fires started and what caused it to start? • Bush fires can start in many places like up north or in tropical places. • Bush fires can be started naturally for example the sun can heat dry areas of bush which catch fire or sometimes people are careless with bbq’s or even cigarettes they throw in the bush. Weather can also cause the fires.

Black Saturday bushfires. • The Black Saturday bushfires were a series of Bushfires that ignited and burnt across the Australian state of victoria on Saturday 7th February 2009. The fires occurred during extreme bushfire- weather conditions and resulted in Australia’s highest ever loss of life from a bushfire , 173 people died and 414 were injured as a result of the fires.

Conditions • Background temperatures reached 46 degrees Celsius (115 °F) and northwesterly winds were over 100 km/h (62 mph). This had been precipitated by an intense heat wave and almost two months of little or no rain. A cool change hit the state in the early evening , brining with it lower temperatures but gale – force winds in excess of 120 mph. This change in wind direction caused the fires to become massive and they burnt with great speed.

Causes • The majority of the fires were ignited by fallen or • Clashing power lines , or were deliberately lit. Other suspected ignition sources included lightning , cigarette butts and sparks from a power tool.

How long did the Black Saturday fires last ? • The "Black Saturday" bushfires in Victoria officially lasted almost 5 weeks - from their beginning on 7 February to 12 March when Victorian authorities announced that the last of the worst bushfires
