Dear Friends, My wonderful staff has given me this opportunity to express my undying gratitude to you all. It is my honor to consider such a number among my acquaintances. Your continued support of those who have been left in trust of my legacy and worldly goods is gratifying. Many years of travel, and diplomacy amassed those treasures they vigilantly maintain, protect, and share with the countless guests who are welcomed into my home. I am so pleased that the grand tradition of entertainment continues on the estate. To Frances’s chagrin, this house was made to entertain as has been exhibited by the many soirees thrown this year and those planned for the next. The open door policy I kept in my home is still in effect to all, yet there are those very special “members” who reserve special access for particular engagements. Never to be left behind the wave of new technology, I would invite you to “friend” me on the book of face, or Facebook as the children are calling it. They also have me “tweeting” although the format is not conducive to my grand and florid rhetorical style. One can also become a fan of the Seward House Museum on Facebook. It’s the easiest way to be the first to know about all things Seward.   As you may know my family bequeathed our beloved home to the community, a legacy that we are proud of and one that you can share in by making a legacy gift of your own. How honored I would be to count you amongst my Donors Diplomatic Gallery.  It does have its practical applications which are notated below.  I would impress upon you the urgency of such a pledge ahead of the blade of fortune, falling as it does at the most inopportune moments. In addition, the house servants have sent out a general appeal this year and would appreciate your support. Alas I linger on. I thank you again from the bottom of my heart for all of this attention. And “huzzah” for Doris ! It is so wonderful to welcome her back to Auburn. Your humble servant, William Henry Seward P.S. In regard to planned giving: 1. Planned gifts can offer estate tax benefits to donors.  2. Planned gifts offer donors a say in how the funds will be used; enable the donor to ensure that his or her heirs will be financially provided for, alongside supporting a charitable cause. 3. Planned gifts allow donors to support a cause without affecting the donor’s current financial situation. 4. Planned gifts give non-profits additional fundraising options. 5. Planned gifts are often larger than annual or capital gifts.

A Message from the Seward House Museum Board President I am so pleased that the Seward House Museum and the greater community are able to celebrate Seward with this visit and lecture by Doris Kearns Goodwin. (Many thanks to Elsa Soderberg for donating the corpus used to fund this and other speaking events.) Timing is everything as they say and the concurrent release of Spielberg’s Lincoln could not have been better planned! There is so much admiration, fascination and love for Seward and his family as demonstrated by the stream of visitors and incredible support by many volunteers, patrons, members, the community and staff. Much has been accomplished through its many incarnations—from when the Seward House was bequeathed to the Emerson Foundation sixty years ago through today in its current form as an independent not-for-profit, led by Billye Chabot since 2010. Much has been accomplished—and more is to come. Let us enjoy the moment as if the man were here to enjoy it with us!

D O R IS K EA R N S G OO D W I N Doris Kearns Goodwin, world-renowned historian, has been reporting on politics and baseball for over two decades. Goodwin is the author of several books and has written for leading national publications. She appears regularly on network television programs and was an on-air consultant for PBS documentaries on Lyndon B. Johnson, the Kennedy Family, Franklin Roosevelt and Ken Burns’ The History of Baseball. She was the first female journalist to enter the Red Sox locker room. Goodwin was born and raised on Long Island, New York. She received her B.A. from Colby College, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. She received her Ph.D. in Government from Harvard University, where she taught Government including a course on the American Presidency. Following her tenure at Harvard, Goodwin served as an assistant to Lyndon Johnson in his last year in the White House. She later assisted Johnson in the preparation of his memoirs. In 1976, Goodwin authored Lyndon Johnson & The American Dream, which became a New York Times best-seller. She followed up in 1987 with the political biography, The Fitzgeralds and The Kennedys, which stayed on the New York Times Best-Seller List for five months. In 1990, it was made into a six-hour ABC miniseries. Her next book, No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The American Home Front During World War II, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in April 1995, as well as the Harold Washington Literary Award, the New England Bookseller Association Award, the Ambassador Book Award and the Washington Monthly Book Award. It was a New York Times best seller for six months. Goodwin’s book, Wait Till Next Year: A Memoir, published in 1997, is about growing up in the 1950s in love with the Brooklyn Dodgers. It has been a New York Times best-seller, as well as a Book-of-the-Month-Club selection. A Washington Post reviewer wrote, “This is a book in the grand tradition of girlhood memoirs, dating from Louisa May Alcott to Carson McCullers and Harper Lee.” Her most recent work, a monumental history of Abraham Lincoln entitled Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, published in October 2005, joined the best-seller lists on its first week in publication, and soon reached #1 on the New York Times Best-Seller List. Team of Rivals won the 2006 Lincoln Prize for an outstanding work about the president and/or the Civil War, the New York Historical Society Book Prize, the Richard Nelson Current award and the New York State Archives History Makers Award. When President Obama was asked if he could only bring one book to the White House other than the Bible what would it be, he said Team of Rivals. A feature film based on Team of Rivals, directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln opens nationwide on November 16th. She is currently at work on a new book about the progressive era: Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft and The Golden Age of Journalism. Goodwin is married to Richard Goodwin, who worked in the White House under both Kennedy and Johnson. Mr. Goodwin’s experience as the investigator who uncovered the quiz show scandals of the 1950s was captured in the Academy Award-nominated movie Quiz Show, directed by Robert Redford. The Goodwin’s have three sons.
