EXPO ARENA 2025 MULTIFUNCTIONAL ARENA + WORK SPACE PROJECT TYPE: ACADEMIC location: ekaterinburg

The choice of the topic for the thesis project was determined by the fact that Ekaterinburg was one of the several cities to host EXPO 2025. The focus of the project was to design an arena to host opening and closing

5

ceremonies. However, the decision to research the topic and look through the history of EXPO events deeply changed the direction of the design process. Discovered problems determined functions, structure and form of the

PAGE 5

arena complex. This approach gave entirely different result, which is reasoned with economical, historical and social aspects.

goal The goal of the project was to deliver a design of arena for EXPO 2025. The history of EXPO exhibitions in Shangai, Hannover and Olympic Games revealed the problems and challenges.

architecture

Problem desolation

Research showed that mass events lay burden for regional and federal budgets. Anticipated development fails as event sites stay unused after the closure.

solution The only way to sustain further development is to provide fexibility to the infrastructure. The ability to transform its pavilions and main buildings will allow to adapt the site for future use.

EXPO Park is situated on the bank of Iset’ river. The masterplan of the park was design by ABD Architects Moscow, Russia. The Arena itself is formed by the main axis of the park which at the same time are pedestrian walkways. The position and structure of the complex outline the logic of the park and become the culmination to the visitors. The structure is divided into three main components: two perpendicular blocks with additional functions and the core - Arena. There are multiple entrances to the blocks and arena which meet visitors in their ways through the park. Spectators’ safe movement formed the open gallery encircling the entire arena from which spectators can get into the building.

rethinking The open gallery encircles the entire volume from which visitors can enter the building. There are four entrances with stairs on each storey. The concert hall itself is surrounded by foyer, medical stations, security, WC, wardrobes and shops. Parking, technical spaces, dressing and equipment rooms are placed on underground levels. The idea for the future transformations

formed the minimum functionality for the arena. Other spaces are situated in complementary blocks. Block A contains hotel rooms, an auditorium, work and commercial spaces, restaurants and cafĂŠs. Block B accomodate business facilities, a conference hall, a restaurant, an exhibition and technical spaces.

Originally, the project of a small public building was studio work made in the third year at USAAA. However, the discontent of the quaility, especially its theoretical part, woke an intention to redesign the project and breathe new

5

life into it. The Educational Cluster is placed on the bank of the Iset river in Ekaterinburg, Russia. The main purpose of the complex is to help students and people that are interested in education on their ways of cognition.

PAGE 29

The structure is divided into four sections which are determined by the chemical and physiological processes in humans’ brain. Every section has its own function and augment brain power in its work.

The river bank has calming effect, which only pursue additional energy and power to those who study and contemplate there. Open spaces and platforms are designed to help students educate themselves even outside the cluster. Two parts of

2

the surrounding landscape came from brain functioning as well. The first describes the work of neurons which need peace and relaxation for the insight. The second part is paralleled with strict patterns where systematic knowledge is formed.

The main goal of the first industrial architecture project was to become acquianted with manufacturing process. Fast upcoming future with artificial intelligence and robotics formed the idea to use these technologies in

5

improving the work process of vehicular service station. The automatization could reduce the time and cost of production. Robotics may transport vehicles within the complex, perform minor tasks and dangerous work.

PAGE 37

Car Service Station is an example of how modern technologies not only improve the production process, but also shape the design of the architecture.

Architecture community online web space for architects

PROJECT TYPE: personal

The outdated methods and the lack of contemporary disciplines in Russian architectural education results in a poor level of present architecture. The current design process does not involve research, problem solving and urban issues, thus, the design concept does not result in a well-reasoned project. Any initiatives in these aspects come from students with the help of students and a few professors. Therefore, the purpose of this architecture community is to ameliorate the level of theoretical and conceptual design and, thus, to improve students’ and young architects’

location: russia 2014

critical thinking; to show how modern architecture evolves through time and development of technologies; to change the view of architects on the design process. Modern practice in education shows how people from other fields may contribute to the architectural field, therefore, it is essential to involve people with diverse experience in the community. The web-site will contain news, international articles and a blog platform which will help to expand issues stated above. A forum within the website will help students in architecture related questions to

ease their study process. Additionally, it is intended to invite international speakers and architects for lectures and workshops to acquire insights on important issues. As the result I want to boost interest in architecture; explain obscure aspects in the design process that are not presented in Russian education system; ameliorate the level and competitiveness of architecture in Russia; establish experimental practice and studies through workshops and master classes.
