T

he Highlands Museum of the Arts presents its third show for the season, November 15 - December 28, 2019. Entitled “The Spirit of Beads: religous symbols to art” the exhibit of hand beaded and sequined flags represents only part of the extensive collection of Haitian and African art owned by Betty Ford-Smith and Butler Smith, Jr.

Ford-Smith is known locally as a retired educator who is an expert quilt maker and collector. She is pictured above at one of her gallery walks with Ed and Ann Gessen and Michael and Elizabeth Ewing. The Gessens’ Haitian flag exhibit is currently on exhibit at the Tampa Museum of Art. The exhibit has been extended due to its popularity. Mr. Ewing is President of the Heartland Radio Group.

Throughout the run of the show, FordSmith has graciously given her time to take museum visitors on a gallery walk, talking about both the history of flags, the flag makers, and her connection as an educator and collector to the art form.

The museum is open Thursdays Saturdays, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. and free to all visitors. The collector’s last gallery walk will take place on December 28th, from 11 a.m. - 12 noon. All members are invited to

Adult Art Classes in December/ January

Composition & Drawing Monday, 1/13, 9 - 11 a.m.

Artists combine the two composition and drawing - as a basis for everything they do. Join master painter Alice Hansen in this one-time class that moves beginning artists from the works of masters and established artists to a study of their own subject matter and how to move it from a vague idea into pencil to paper and imagination to beginning works of art.

Pastels in the Afternoon Tuesdays, 1/14 - 28 1 - 2:30 p.m.

Working with pastels, artist Mary Lou Herald, will teach the basic use of pastels, concentrating on choice of colors, blending, shading, and other skills that will allow students to test their hand at the gentle art of creating substance and form with pastels. Meet and Greet - Artists-in-Residence Watch the HAL website beginning Janaury 1 for an invitation January - March to meet and create with our Artists-in-Residence Caleigh xxx and Monica Villars. Caleigh holds a Masters in Studio art from xxx. Her work in portraiture will be a featured part of her two month residency.

Looking for an art class you don’t see? Shoot the education committee an email % manager@ highlandsartleague.org and we’ll see if we can find a teacher and make your wish come true.

Adult Art Class Offerings - 2020

The Art of Pine Needle Basket Making Beginner - Intermediate Level Wednesdays, January 15, 22, & 29, and February 5; 1 - 3:30 p.m.

Join basket artist Gloria Peters as she teaches beginners the first steps in creating equisite baskets of Florida natural materials, homegrown pine needles. Participants will come away with one beautifully crafted basket, allowing them to move ahead to more complex works of art. Intermediate-level students will learn new skills in introducing more complex stitching, additions of materials, and processes to enhance their basket making. Great step-by-step instruction in a pleasant, stress-free environment.

One-Stroke Painting Thursdays, January 16, 23, 30 and February 6, 13 and 20. 10 a.m. – 12 noon Join artist Judy Nicewitz for a six-session class that will teach you the interesting and popular decorative painting technique called One Stroke Painting. In this course double and multi-loading of paint on brushes is used to achieve highlights, shadows and color changes all in one stroke. This very simple technique allows for interesting combinations, especially when you have different colors on the brush. Blend, shade, base-coat, and highlight all in one stroke, making your painting quick and easy. It’s a great beginners technique for decorative artists of all skill levels. Sessions build on one another for this six week course, with each week introducing a new surface from wooden frames to clay pots. You won’t want to miss a single one! Class materials will be included in the class fee, allowing you to take home and practice, as well as owning your own collection of paints and tools after the course has ended to continue to create!

Choose ours... Create your own!

HAL began offering Art Uncorked classes in 2008, and while others have coined their own version, HAL is back after a major remodel to present area residents with classes that borrow on the fun of amateur art in a way that is typically HAL - with a little splash of creativity and an emphasis on quality. Wrap up December with Art Uncorked Saturday evenings, 5 - 7 p.m., hosted by local artist Beverly Marshall. Between the Needles on December 21 and Snowy Blue Nights on December 28 are not-to-be-missed opportunities to join friends, family, or co-workers as you paint, snack on complimentary hors d’hoeuvres, drink a little wine, and enjoy the holiday spirit. Beverly’s classes continue on Saturdays through January with new topics weekly. Canvas not your thing? Then join Barb Hall and Nancy Palmer for a January Bling! class on Tuesday, January 14, when they’ll lead you through easy-to-make bracelet making that’ll be a perfect compliment to your new year wardrobe. Judy Nicewitz brings to HAL her own brand of Art Uncorked with painting off-canvas in January Wednesdays. Paint on glass with A Little Music, A Little Wine on January 7, ceramic tile with Artfully Yours on January 21, and finally on your own “found treasure” Wooden Furniture Art keepsake on January 28.

Color Explorations Workshop @ HAL with Michael Grecian

Back by popular demand, artist, teacher, and color theorist, Michael Grecian will return to HAL’s VAC on January 27 for another fabulous one day workshop. Working with artists on color mixing, the one day workshop will always relate back to the 12 color wheel for reference. Grecian will lead artists through a review of primaries, secondaries, and compliments, moving on to work with color relationships, juxtaposed colors, and include exercises that demonstrate the importance and effect of color relationships. Grecian is known for leading workships that provide artists with new tools for practice, and a greater knowledge of the use of color in their work. He studied art at Northern Illinios University, where he was a MFA candidate. Grecian has worked in the art world since 1978 in the Midwest and South where his work is well-known and his teaching is applauded.

Winter Newsletter 2019/2020 Art @ HAL Travels with HAL Every-other Month Bus Jaunts and Photo Club Outings Art doesn’t happen in a vaccum. Tuesday’s Gals and Pals sessions and once a month meetings of the Highlands (MoTA) Photo Club are proof of that. The sessions are a brisk exchange of ideas, creativity, and practicing one’s craft. It is what prompted HAL executive director Janell Marmon to extend an invitation in early November to interested members to board a bus to Punta Gorda on November 19. A small group of HAL members jumped aboard the bus, setting out to take in the Visual Arts Center’s traveling exhibit featuring the Florida Watercolor Society’s 2019 award winners. Among them was HAL’s own Alice Hansen. After touring the museum exhibits and facility with Program and Education Director Kim Phillips, the
