EDWIN BERG [Trio] ERIC SURMENIAN — FRED JEANNE Vol. II

BEE JAZZ

FRED JEANNE EDWIN BERG ERIC SURMENIAN

No matter how diverse the sources from which the Berg/Jeanne/Surmenian Trio wells up its musical interpretations, the result on this highly lucid follow-up of their album Perpetuum [2009] is – even at its first hearing – one of a remarkable consistency. Essential bits of soul of these very fine young jazz-musicians are spread out over all eleven songs. The remarkable thing is, that this is done so without compromising the differences in character that are finding each other along a road of ease, lightheartedness and improvisation that winds its way from the darker depths of melancholy scales that are so carefully touched upon in songs like Meditatie or Ma dernière volonté, all the way up to the clear blue skies of Arabic bravoura we find in Les trois soeurs de Salamanca, or the mysteries of Poussières d’ange. The assembled voice that springs up from all three emotional clavichords, is one of a soul that is deeming for tenderness, sincerity and enlightenment. From the rhythmic fervour of Caroussel, to the azzuro-interpretation of Edelweiss, the album radiates a uniqueness of sound and soul that is as much consoling as it is brilliant in every meaning of this very last defining word. As deeply blue and sunny as the skies of Southern France where the album was recorded. Serge van Duijnhoven, Brussels [April 2011]
