Everything about the recording of Are You Gonna Go My Way happened quickly and without much thought. I continued to work instinctually as usual, not paying attention to the trends and sounds du jour. The album slipped out of me without even realizing that I was actually making it. I was producing an album for Vanessa Paradis at the time and most of my sessions took place quickly before and after hers. It was a very creative time for me, recording two albums at once, and as it turned out, one of the most iconic works of my career. And it was also the beginning of my studio relationship with Craig Ross. The day the title track was conceived we were setting up for a session with Vanessa and literally had five minutes until her arrival. I was on the drums, Tony Breit was on bass and Craig on guitar. Craig started noodling with the riff, I began to play and then Craig and I telepathically put the song into form. It was a flash and when we finished the one-take performance, we ran out of the studio to welcome Vanessa. When I got home later that night, I put the cassette of “Are You Gonna Go My Way on my boom box and blasted it and began hearing the melody. I quickly wrote the lyrics on an old paper bag and the next day went into the studio and sang the vocal. It was explosive, but I had no idea it would become such a major signature for me, and it was so different from everything that was on the radio at the time. It was so raw. Eventually when it came out, the record label struggled with it and radio had no idea what to do with it. It was promoted for months and months and seemed like it was going nowhere until the fuse was finally lit. Accompanied by the brilliant video directed by Mark Romanek, it became the rock anthem that has proven to be timeless and one of my personal favorite tracks ever. Let love rule,

Miami, July 2013

Are You Gonna Go My Way was released March 9, 1993, as Virgin Records release #86984. The album peaked at No. 12 on the Billboard Top 200. The album was certified Double Platinum by the RIAA.

The album was originally titled Eleutheria for which the above artwork was created and never used or seen until now.

The following U.S. singles were issued: Are You Gonna Go My Way (February 22, 1993); Believe (July 17, 1993); Heaven Help (November 10, 1993); Is There Any Love In Your Heart (December 2, 1993) and Spinning Around Over You (Non-LP Track, January 14, 1994 also fetaured on Reality Bites soundtrack).

“And I won’t leave until I’m done” proclaimed Lenny Kravitz on the title track of Are You Gonna Go My Way, which at the time Entertainment Weekly dubbed “his finest moment yet.” Twenty years later—and nearly 25 since the release of his first album Let Love Rule (20th Anniversary Edition also available)—Lenny is very far from being done. From the iconic Mark Romanek-directed MTV Award-winning “Best Male Video” to the timeless Jean Baptiste Mondino cover photo, Are You Gonna Go My Way was the album that certified Kravitz as a bona fide rock star, scoring his first multiplatinum album in the U.S. also selling millions worldwide, landing his first No.1 albums in both the U.K. and Australia (also landing the No. 1 single with the title track, and to this day is still the most played song on Triple M Melbourne & Sydney radio), his first No. 1 U.S. Mainstream Rock single as well as receiving two 1994 Grammy® nominations (Best Male Rock Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song). It is also important to note that all four released singles, plus a fifth non-album B-side, “Spinning Around Over You,” charted on Billboard. When it was released, Rolling Stone magazine claimed, “Lenny Kravitz has found a space to be himself.” But the journey that became Are You Gonna Go My Way was a long and very prolific one. And the process continued throughout the 1993-1994 Universal Love Tour in support of the album. This 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition is an exclusive invitation inside that never-before-witnessed process; culled from Lenny’s personal master tapes and cassettes such as the early cassette of “Good Lovin’” to unfinished songs like “Work Like The Devil” and “Feeling Alright” or a few of Lenny’s original demos for the 1992 Vanessa Paradis album he produced, the first of which, “I May Not Be A Star,” never saw the light of day. Fans will delight in the discovery of two unreleased tracks, “Papa” and “Getting Out,” which were reworked and included on the 2008 album It’s Time For A Love Revolution and retitled “Long And Sad Goodbye” and “Will You Marry Me,” respectively. Also unearthed from Lenny’s personal masters is the fantastic impromptu blues instrumental jam “Early Morning Blues.” As vocals on some of the songs were never finished, we have decided to include the songs as they were left at the time, giving you an inside look into the album’s creative process in progress. Also included are the album’s seven official studio B-sides, including “For The First Time” ironically the first ever Lenny recording with musical partner Craig Ross, as well as three rare acoustic versions of “Believe,” “Heaven Help” and “Sister,” all remastered for the first time ever. — Mathieu Bitton Miami, July 2013
