BE For Transformation

At High Point University, every student receives an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment with caring people.ÂŽ

BE

distinctive.

Discover how HPU prepares you to stand out. You have reached an important moment in your life. We

know that success is not a one-size-fits-all concept. You must create your own definition of success, and we encourage

individuality — letting you be you. We believe you’re already extraordinary, no matter what you have or haven’t done.

Being extraordinary isn’t about achievement. It’s about a

choice of who you want to be. High Point University will equip you with the tools and skills to take you there, wherever that may be for you.

College should open your mind, inspire you and set

you free. Most importantly, it should prepare you for

the world as it is going to be, not the world as it is, nor as it was. Today’s world doesn’t require you to quote Plato. It requires you to be someone. A prepared, relevant, well-rounded someone.

We value higher learning. We’ll give you the knowledge and expertise to succeed in your field. Provide you with mentors that challenge your mind. Offer seminars that cultivate your interests. And, engage you in hands-on

learning to refine and teach you new skills. But, making the choice — to learn, to grow, to do, to see and to BE Extraordinary — that starts with you. HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein

FOUR PILLARS OF ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Academic Excellence:

Become proficient in academic disciplines known as majors taught by stellar faculty with topnotch resources. This is a given for top accredited universities around the world, but this is also where the academic model for some universities begins and ends. At HPU, we go far beyond this to include three additional pillars.

Experiential Learning:

Experiential learning accounts for 25 percent of the academic hours in each major at HPU. Students are educated in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom within labs, studios, career shadowing, internships, study abroad and in professional settings to gain real-world experience within their discipline.

4 Year Development of Life Skills:

Our 4-year investment in each student’s success goes much deeper than their discipline — we are committed to equipping students with the life skills necessary to be successful within their career and life’s daily interactions. We use common exchanges and interactions — an interview over a meal at a fine dining restaurant, for example — to teach the art of persuasion, effective communication and other skills that help HPU students stand out.

Model Values & Build Character:

High Point University is on the John Templeton 100 list of Colleges that Encourage Character Development. It is in our DNA to graduate learned young people who are grounded in sound moral decisionmaking and are framed with good character. We believe “to whom much is given, much is required.”

Dr. Nido Qubein interviews General Colin Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and National Security Advisor.

No one gets far in life without the encouragement of others. At High Point University, Dr. Nido Qubein is all about being involved, engaged and modeling values. Every student learns directly from him during their first semester as they attend the weekly President’s Seminar on Life Skills. This class is an opportunity for every first-year student to reap the benefits of Dr. Qubein’s lifetime of learning and continual achievement. This course teaches time management, energy management, communication skills, financial literacy, leadership and soft skills to achieve success and significance in your life. His seminars prepare you for the world as it is going to be.

A Life of Success and Significance At the age of 17, HPU’s president came to the U.S. with little money, no connections and a limited command of the English language. Since then, his achievements have earned him the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, induction into the Horatio Alger Society of Distinguished Americans and placement within the National Speakers Association Hall of Fame. Dr. Qubein is a nationally recognized speaker, author and consultant to some of America’s finest corporations.

They assist you in your transition to college life during your first year. Tools, teams and tutors are all around to help you excel. For you, college promises thought-provoking interactions, academic challenges and life-changing experiences. It means opportunities to push you in uncharted directions, to take bold, intellectual risks, to try out new ways of thinking and acting in the world. That you want to be an Honors Scholar or Fellowship student means you want an education that engages your mind and body, one that presents you with difficult problems and empowers you to build your own solutions. Honors Scholars and Academic Fellows collaborate with fellow students and faculty to deepen the connection to your education and engage in undergraduate research opportunities. Fellows programs include business, communications, education, leadership and natural sciences. The HPU Honors Scholar Program offers an innovative education you can embody, one that responds to your interests and passions, engaging you inside and outside of the classroom. The program is project-based, collaborative and challenging. We believe students should apply their course work to real-world issues. They should have the time and space to tinker with ideas and materials, to figure out what works and what doesn’t. highpoint.edu/fellows

Students in all academic disciplines are given the opportunity to partner with professors and engage in research, scholarship and creative endeavors as early as their freshman year. High Point University professors depend on and encourage our undergraduates to participate in their research efforts. The Undergraduate Research and Creative Works program encourages collaborative partnerships between nurturing faculty mentors and enterprising students. Critical inquiry, brainstorming, problem solving, debate and mutual discovery intertwine, leading over time to the production of finished works suitable for publication, exhibition, or presentation in either professional or public forums. The ability to work in a team environment is one of the top desires of hiring managers today. By engaging in undergraduate research with HPU, you’ll have four years of experience to train you on your team management, conflict resolution and communication skills to make you a valuable asset to any employer. When we hit the field, court, water or any surface, people know we’re there to compete. And, if they don’t immediately see it, our student section — Purple Reign — will remind them. Being a Panther means sporting your gear, screaming your guts out in the Millis Center and high-fiving Prowler in Vert stadium. It’s easy to get rowdy as you support more than 16 teams that earn NCAA tournament positions each year, or as you watch our exciting new head basketball coach, Tubby Smith ‘73, lead the team. He joins the Panthers after serving as the head coach at Memphis for two seasons. An all-conference standout for High Point College from 1969–1973, Smith coached Kentucky to the 1998 national championship and is one of two head coaches to guide five different programs to the NCAA Division 1 Tournament (Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota and Texas Tech).

HPU Baseball finished the 2018 season setting a new Big South Division 1 program record for both conference and overall wins, and won at least 30 games for the third straight year.

Your undergraduate admissions application serves as your Presidential Scholarship application — there is no separate application required. But, priority is given to Early Decision and Early Action applicants. Top scholar candidates will be awarded the majority of their merit scholarship at the time of admission and then invited to increase their initial scholarship amount by interviewing on campus during a special weekend in February. *High Point University is test optional for admission. If you would like to be considered for our Presidential Scholarship Program or Honors Scholar Program, an SAT or ACT score is required. You must request that the official results of the SAT or ACT be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. HPU’s SAT code is 5293; the ACT code is 3108.
