Our Innovative Educational Model

PROFICIENT IN A DISCIPLINE 1 BECOME Become an expert in an academic discipline known as a major. This is a given for all accredited universities around the world, but this is also where the academic model for many universities begins and ends. At HPU, we go far beyond this to include three additional pillars.

LEARNING 2 EXPERIENTIAL Experiential learning accounts for 25 percent of the academic hours in each major at HPU. Students are educated in the classroom, but also

outside of the classroom within labs, studios, career shadowing, internships, study abroad, conducting research and in businesses gaining realworld experience within their disciplines.

VALUES & BUILD CHARACTER 3 MODEL High Point University is on the John Templeton Foundation list of 100 Colleges that Encourage Character Development. It is in our DNA

that we graduate learned young people grounded in sound moral decision-making framed with good character. High Point University cultivates excellence and places you immediately onto a path to greatness.

LIFE SKILLS 4 DEVELOP Our investment in each student’s success goes much deeper than their discipline – we are committed to equipping students with the life skills

necessary to be successful within their career and life’s daily interactions. From the art of persuasion, to effective communication and leadership skills; to getting results in life; to interviewing over a meal at a fine dining establishment; to managing your time and energy to get results in life, and more. We also use daily exchanges and interactions as educational opportunities to prepare students for a life of success and significance.

Committed Mentors

igh Point University is committed to academic excellence. Students are taught by outstanding professors who are actively involved in both teaching and scholarly research. Our emphasis on undergraduate research provides students and faculty the opportunity to work collaboratively on a number of special projects and initiatives. Faculty members are active in professional associations, are respected writers and researchers and serve as mentors to our outstanding students.

“ I would like to impact Physician Assistant (PA) education at High Point University by ensuring professional growth and personal excellence for each graduate. At HPU, we focus on holistic education, experiential learning and values-based living, which compliments PA education. HPU students are empowered to lead lives of significance. This value closely aligns with the mission of the PA profession.” —Linda Jean Sekhon, DHSc, PA-C, founding chair of the PA Program, Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants

“ I love teaching at High Point University because there is no limit on what we can achieve with such great faculty, staff, students and resources. I am continually inspired by interacting each day with students who are hard-working, faculty who are creative and innovative pedagogues and staff who are dedicated to providing outstanding services to the whole community in an environment that elicits excellence.” —Dr. Marc Foster, chair of the Department of Music THIRTY

CARING PEOPLE

“ I love teaching at HPU because it affords the opportunity to reach out to young people in many ways and be a part of an extraordinary team of professors.” —Dr. Shirley Disseler, professor of Education and chairperson of the Global LEGO Education Advisory Panel’s (LEAP) Advisory Board. Disseler challenges HPU education majors to hold “LEGO Build Days” for local children. The HPU students go to nearby classrooms and host elementary students on campus for workshop builds to accelerate their learning experience.

“I remember what it was like to make that first scientific discovery — that feeling you get when you realize you might be the only person in the universe to know something. Being able to give my students similar opportunities is one of the most fulfilling parts of my job.” —Dr. Brad Barlow, assistant professor of Astrophysics, earned his Ph.D. in Physics (Astrophysics concentration) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“ I feel privileged to be a part of such an engaged community of learners — and that includes not only students, but faculty and staff as well. The opportunities for us to all learn from each other and grow are endless on the High Point University campus.” —Dr. Angela Bauer, chair of the Biology Department. Dr. Bauer has Bachelor of Arts degrees in Psychology and Neuroscience from Lawrence University in Wisconsin, a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Northwestern University and she conducted postdoctoral studies at Harvard Medical School.

“ I love it when my students experience the joy of discovery. In the classroom and in undergraduate research, they discover their passion; they discover their creativity; they uncover answers to scientific questions and they slowly unfold mysteries of the universe. Just like finding the prettiest shell on the seashore, they experience the pure joy of investigating.” —Dr. Aaron Titus, chair of the Physics Department. He is the recipient of HPU’s Professor of the Year and the Meredith Clark Slane Distinguished Teaching-Service Award.

“ The part of teaching that I cherish the most is the opportunity to see students grow intellectually and emotionally over time. With each new course, they become more inquisitive, adept at critical thinking, and passionate about affecting social change in the world of sports.” —Dr. Jenny Lukow, associate professor of Sport Management, Ph.D. from Indiana University

CHOOSE TO BE EXTRAORDINARY!

®

You are about to embark on an extraordinary chapter in life. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions would like to congratulate you on your achievements thus far. Some of you are just starting the college-search process while others of you are on the brink of making a final decision; regardless of where you are in the process, please know that we are here to help! The High Point University Undergraduate Admissions Application is accessible at highpoint.edu/apply, or via Common App at commonapp.org/school/high-point-university. We offer three application plans for incoming freshmen:

EARLY DECISION is for those applicants who consider High Point University their number one college choice. It is a binding agreement in which, if admitted, you agree to withdraw all other college applications and enroll at High Point University. Early Decision students have first priority in housing selection and in class registration event sign-up. EARLY ACTION is for those applicants who consider High Point University one of their top few college choices. It is a nonbinding application plan. Early Action students have second priority in housing selection and in class registration event sign-up. REGULAR DECISION is for those students not applying under

one of our early application plans. Applications received under the Regular Decision plan will be reviewed after the first of the year. Applications received after the Regular Decision deadline will be reviewed on a space available basis. View application submission deadlines and response notification information at highpoint.edu/admissions.

APPLICATION DEADLINES Early Decision: November 1 Early Action: November 15 Regular Decision: March 15 Each year, a bald eagle soars across the crowd at the end of HPU’s Commencement to symbolize the ideals of free enterprise, independence and the ability to pursue new opportunities in America.

PERSONAL INVITATION FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Future HPU Student, Choosing where you’ll attend college is a momentous decision. So many schools. So many tours. So many choices. On the surface many seem to look the same, but at High Point University we know what sets us apart. At High Point University, every student receives an extraordinary education in an inspiring environment with caring people. At HPU, we are preparing students for the world as it’s going to be. Here’s what I tell freshmen students in the Life Skills class that I teach annually on campus: There are no unrealistic dreams; only unrealistic timelines. Entrepreneur or journalist, teacher or accountant, athletic trainer or physicist, pharmacist or physical trainer, musician or interior designer, undecided or unsure, our inspiring academic environment will encourage you to dream big and to find solutions to global challenges. We hope that you enjoy this view book, but please know that in order to fully understand High Point University’s extraordinary story, you must walk the grounds of our university, learn from our innovative and distinguished professors and meet the extraordinary students who call this place home. We invite you to schedule your campus visit today and experience the ‘Extraordinary’ at High Point University. We look forward to seeing you soon!
