PRESIDENT’S CIRCLE HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

2018 Edition (June 1, 2017 - May 31, 2018)

"

I have lived by the rule of thirds. If you spend one-third of your life learning, onethird of your life earning and one-third of your life serving, you’ll have a life filled with success and framed with significance. - Nido R. Qubein

DEAR HPU FRIEND:

Thank you for supporting this 94-year-old institution of higher learning with your prayers, advocacy and resources. As you know, High Point University focuses on providing students with a holistic, values-based education, in an environment that encourages personal initiative, free enterprise and service. Your continued stewardship has enabled us to transform our campus, to enrich our academic programs, and to attract stellar faculty and staff. Philanthropy has been a cornerstone of High Point University’s success. Each fall, we recognize leadership investors in our annual President’s Circle Honor Roll publication. This year’s list of generous supporters includes individuals and corporations who have contributed $1,924 or more, between June 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018. Additionally, we celebrate the gifts of those who have chosen to invest through the Sterling Society with a planned gift, and the League of Loyal Alumni, some of whom have given to HPU for more than thirty consecutive years. Your investment in High Point University will make an immediate impact on the lives of current and future students. Thanks to you, the University continues to grow and expand as we partner together to prepare tomorrow’s leaders for lives of success and significance. With gratitude,

Nido R. Qubein President

I support High Point University because I am High Point University; because it is my charge to deliver the promises we convey. It is my charge to serve the students in ways so they can go and change the world. In my opinion, giving back is the way we realize that dream - we realize that potential - and what we do is create opportunities for students to then go and create more opportunities. - Dr. David Bergen Department Chair and Z. Smith Reynolds Professor of Human Relations

The Daniel H. Herbert, Sr. Family Endowed Scholarship was established by Christine Yackman P’19 in honor of her father, about which she says, "My father was a very giving man and forward-thinker who embodied God, family and country. He became a pillar in his community and instilled in my family the values we hold dear today - the same values we see HPU instilling in its students. My family and I wanted to give someone the opportunity to attend college, which is an opportunity my father never had." - Christine Yackman, P’19

ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIPS MAKE A DIFFERENCE Kristen McCarthy ’18 will begin her career this fall having crossed the stage in May with the support of her HPU alumni family. “There are many children who need skilled educators who care about them, and only a small number of people are willing to dedicate themselves to the field,” Richard Hallman ’61 says. “I hope this enables students to do the good work they were intended to do and find fulfillment in the field of special education.” Hallman has experienced the kindness and generosity of special education teachers firsthand. He has two granddaughters living with autism who have developed their abilities by working with their teachers. After being awarded the scholarship, Kristen shared, "I am grateful for the support and the fact that this scholarship encourages more people to consider the importance of special education."

Just like with our experience here, HPU continues to be a campus with a tight-knit community and strong academics. We were prepared for our careers because of our caring advisors and mentors and are grateful for those who shaped us - including the many friends we met while at school. It’s just second nature for us to give back to our alma mater because we were given so much while we were at HPU.

TORNADO RELIEF Members of HPU’s Student Government Association (SGA) supported local relief efforts for the tornado that affected Greensboro, NC in April. Erwin Montessori, a local elementary school, suffered damage in the disaster. HPU’s SGA presented Erwin Montessori with a check for $6,000 to aid in repairs. "This donation is amazing and overwhelming. When there’s a crisis and bad things happen, people really rise up. To hear that High Point University’s Student Government Association is so willing to recognize our needs and to step up and fill that need is just remarkable," Erwin Montessori principal, Dr. Deborah Parker said about the donation.

AMBER WILLIAMSON

CLASS OF 2014 AND 2016 (M.S.) Manager of Communications & Programs at Business High Point “I support High Point University because High Point University supported me. The success I have achieved in my career was dependent on those who reached back and sowed back into the University. It’s now my goal to do the same for those who come in the future. I was a recipient of an alumni scholarship. Being from a family with five children, and one of three in college at the same time, my family’s burden was lifted. I didn't feel like I was just competing in the classroom, I was thriving because having a scholarship gave me one less thing to worry about.”

MARCO SEBASTIAN CLASS OF 2018

Marco Sebastian, a recent graduate with a major in Computer Science and minors in Mathematics and Business Administration, began his career as a Global Data Analyst with Bloomberg L.P. in Princeton, New Jersey. As a student, Marco was actively engaged on campus, serving on the Student Alumni Council and holding employment with the Office of Institutional Advancement. Sebastian says, “There were so many chances to reach out, and speak with professionals in a wide variety of fields. I was able to take advantage of HPU in the City, and while on that trip, I was exposed to Bloomberg and realized my place in the company.” These opportunities coupled with dedicated faculty and staff mentors have taught Sebastian valuable lessons. "Get involved... At worst you may fail, and that is ok. Failing is the best way to learn something new. I have learned such valuable skills from stepping outside of my comfort zone. After experiencing the impact HPU had on his life as a student, and armed with the knowledge that the support of alumni, family and friends made these opportunities available, he was inspired to participate in the Class 2018 Promise campaign, and begin his journey as an HPU League of Loyal Alumni member in his first year postgraduation.

FIRST-GENERATION AND SAY YES SCHOLARS HPU awards five Say Yes Scholarships annually, three of which are presented to Guilford County Schools graduating seniors, and two of which are presented to first generation college students from the city of High Point. “These talented young people have accepted scholarships worth more than $146,000 each under the umbrella of the Say Yes to Education program. All five scholarships over the next four-year period are fully funded by High Point University, a wonderful commitment by President Nido Qubein to the students in our city and in Guilford County,” said Joe Cristy, director of undergraduate recruitment at HPU. “The full-tuition, fees and books all paid for four years – it’s such a blessing. High Point University has always been my first-choice school. It’s the perfect match because I want to stay in High Point; it’s my home," said Clara Primus, a recipient from High Point Central High School. In addition to joining a university focused on academic and professional excellence, the recipients are also enrolled in HPU’s Bonner Leader program. “We’re not just giving these students scholarships to come to High Point University. These scholarships are an investment in the city,” said the Rev. Dr. Joe Blosser, Robert G. Culp director of service learning at HPU. “These recipients are part of the Bonner Leader program because it puts them out in the community 300 hours per year doing service at nonprofits.”
