“I am very much looking forward to our second show as we celebrate the retro cars of Germany,” says the event’s founder, Scottsdale resident West Kenyon, who notes that the successful debut show in April hosted 300 guests and 70 cars.

“After the success of the Camelback Motor Show last April, we are very excited to partner with the Camelback Vintage Motor Show again,” says Sam Power, Regional Territory Manager – Arizona for Traverse City, Michigan-based Hagerty Insurance Agency LLC.

The event is limited to 120 cars, and the $25 vehicle Entry Fee will again be donated to Hope Women’s Center, which in 2018 served more than 1,600 women and their families with programs to help support physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

“It is our pleasure to be working alongside West on this all-German car show,” notes James Patrick, owner of Patrick Motorsports in Phoenix.

GreatGarages Centennial for Citroën written by David M. Brown Citroën is 100 this year, and fans of the innovative French marque are celebrating.

In April, members of ACE, Arizona Citroën Enthusiasts, founded by Scottsdale’s Dominique Legeai in 2015, celebrated the event at the first Camelback Car Show in Phoenix, with about a dozen representatives of the marque showcased. The 32 members of ACE casually meet to enjoy and maintain the Citroën name.

In 1919, inventor André-Gustave Citroën (1878–1935) produced the Type A from his Paris factory. Approximately 30,000 of these were built, and the new marque was publicized by their successful use as taxis.

Following the Trèfle (Cloverleaf) cars of the 1920s, the beautiful 11 CV Traction Avant appeared in 1934, the first mass-produced car with front wheel drive; more than 700,000 sold in various 4- and 6-cylinder-engine configurations.

This was replaced in 1955 by the sinuously styled and innovative Citroën DS. The famous 2 CV, the French Volkswagen, conceived prior to World War II, appeared in 1948. The small car, “four wheels under an umbrella,” was built for the masses, many driving from farms along rural roads.

A retired restaurant owner from Chicago, Legeai notes that the major centennial festivities in France are July 19–21 in the small northern French town of La Ferté-Vidame, a few kilometers from where he was raised. “This is where the three prototypes of the 2CV were concealed from the Germans during World War II; they were ‘discovered’ much later in 1994 in the attic part of a barn, under bails of straw,” he explains.

When Citroën had controlling interest in Maserati, the company

produced the extraordinary SM from 1970–75 with V-6 power and capable of 135 mph. And, to follow the DS, the company produced the CX beginning in 1974, featuring a GTi Turbo 4-cylinder version in the 1980s, capable of 125 mph. The marque’s successful motorsport history includes winning the World Rally Championship eight times. PSA Peugeot Citroën has been the controlling group since 1976.

Here are some of those Valley centennial celebrants: •1925 Citroën 5-Horsepower Trèfle –– “Ceci n’est pas une voiture . . . c’est un art de vivre,” (“It’s not a car, it is a lifestyle.”): That’s owner Dr. Mark Saperstein’s motto for the car-lover’s life.

Dr. Saperstein owns this and four other Citroëns: a 1956 Traction Avant BL; 1970 DS 21; a very rare 1970/2015 2CVBurton roadster; and a 1970/2013 2CV / Moto Guzzi Pembleton reverse trike.

From the early days of the carmaker, his Trèfle was one of the first built and sold in London at Citroën’s new facility for the British market in Brooke Green, Hammersmith. Given the British taxable horsepower rating of 7.5 horsepower, the car is called “Cloverleaf” for three seats in that configuration: two front and one centered in the rear.

He found this classic on eBay. “It was being offered by a dealership as agent for the owner who had inherited it and had no knowledge of its history. It seemed odd for a French car that the steering wheel was on the right side,” says Saperstein, a dentist who has practiced in the Valley for 40-plus years. He grew up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.

An acquaintance remembered seeing a similar car in Harrah’s Museum in Reno, Nevada. “My inquiries revealed this was that car, and the museum’s successor was able to supply full documentation regarding its acquisition in England as well as photos,” he says.

For this “Cinq Cheveaux” (five taxable horsepower), André Citroën commissioned the great glass master, René Lalique, to make the first of his famous glass mascots, this one depicting five superimposed horses. Saperstein carved the mascot for his car in Lucite acrylic.

“This car has a quality not found in many others,” he says. “It is irresistibly charming.”

•Citroën 1953 11CVBN Traction Avant –– Phoenix resident Mischa Dick bought the car from a French collector in Sonoma, California.

He grew up with Citroëns; in fact, the first car he ever rode in was an early suicide-door 2CV his father owned and used to pick up his mother and him from the hospital after he was born. A variety of Citroën 2CVs followed in the family. His uncle also drove an HY van for decades.

His first Citroën is a 1981 Acadiane which he still owns. He also has a 1987 2CV, the same color as the one he had in high school, and his dad has two 1990 2CVs. “The 11CV is just a nice-driving, good-looking car,” he says.

After emigrating from Germany 25 years ago, he worked as an aeronautical engineer and now has a career in healthcare finance.

His other joy is airplanes. “I fly just about as often as I can,”

he says. “So, if it has an engine and moves, I am interested.

“The Traction Avant was truly revolutionary at the time and very much on purpose to compete in the market,” he notes.

“It was well ahead in technology and ended up needing a ‘capital infusion’ from the new company owner at the time, Michelin, to get going.”

Among the innovations were front-wheel drive, hydraulic brakes, unibody and rack-and-pinion steering.

“The most remarkable thing is, I think, it is the sexiest car ever designed, and there are other crazies that agree with me. Mine isn’t a concours show car, but it presents ok, and it drives very well,” he says.

“I believe we can never own an old car or airplane,” he adds.

“We are merely the custodians for a while, so I see myself as the current custodian.”

•1972 DS –– Barry Singer had owned a new DS in New York City from 1972–84 and says he had never quite gotten over it. He moved to Phoenix in 1992, when he opened a payroll service and established his family.

Around 2003, Singer found some Citroën material in California through the internet. Interested, he attended some club events, met a few marque fans and got a call one day two years later from a friend who said he found him his car.

Safety innovations alone include an engine that slides under the car if a head-on collision occurs and a steering wheel designed to throw the driver to the side in a collision instead of impacting him or her in the stomach.

The DS was available in a four-door version and as a sevenseater, and master coachbuilder Henri Chapron produced a sexy cabriolet version. The model continued until 1975, with about 1.4 million sold.

At the same time, the DS 23 was fast in the day and could make 120 mph. “This car is priceless to me; I love it,” he says.

“What is special to me about this car is that it’s a one-owner car and has always been an Arizona car,” Singer explains, noting he bought it from an elderly couple from the west side.

“It’s unusual not to have had a string of owners during the 40plus years this one has been around.”

•1973 DS 23 Pallas IE –– After years of owning Citroën DS models, Harlan Cone wanted a top-of-the-line DS 23 Injected model. In 2014, the Phoenix resident found this rust-free 5-speed in La Habra, California.

The DS appeared with the larger 2347-cc engine until 1975; the 5-speed was available only in 1973 and 1974. Cone’s car also has the Pallas Trim package.

He grew up knowing Citroëns. His parents, Suzanne and Lorin, had many. In the 1980s, his father owned Hilary Motor Cars, which imported limited numbers of the DS successor, the CX, after Citroën discontinued exporting cars into the United States in the early 1970s.

Cone has four other Citroëns: a 1967 DS 21 Pallas; 1973

He, his wife and friend Tom Petz stripped the DS 23 to bare metal, took off the doors, fenders, trim and other parts and had them painted. He also replaced the carpet with an imported one made to specification in England as well as sorted out the mechanical parts. “Now the car is a reliable and great driving,” he says.

“These cars are art on wheels to me,” he says. “I love how they look and I love how they drive and I love the design and intelligence that went into making them.”

•1981 2CV Charleston –– Jim Fahey’s grey/grey car was imported from the Ariège area in Midi-Pyrénées region of southwestern France in November 2006.

He purchased it shortly after and kept it in the Chicago area until 2011 when he brought the 2CV to Arizona. “When I acquired the car, it was in need of some general TLC and also had a fairly tired engine,” says Fahey, who winters in the Peoria community of Vistancia and summers in Minneapolis.

Fahey quickly bought a factory-remanufactured 602-cc engine from French Parts Service in Washington State. Compact and light weight, it was delivered to his home by UPS. “It was

a matter of a day’s work with a couple of fellow French car enthusiasts to lift out the old engine and install the new one,” he recalls. “No engine lift or hoist required!”

During 42 years in production, the 2CV was available from 1948 to 1988 in France and through 1990 in Portugal.

Approximately 3.8 million 2CVs were built including several 2CV derivative models such as the Ami, the Dyane, the Acadiane and the Mehari.

The “Charleston” was a special edition of the 2CV Club model, introduced in late 1980 and offered through to the last 2CV built in Portugal on July 27, 1990, he explains.

Since 2006, he has maintained the car and replaced worn components as needed: a carburetor, fabric top, shock absorbers, etc. “My 2CV now functions as our second car, and it is driven almost daily. It can easily keep up with traffic on our local expressways and delivers approximately 34 to 36 mpg depending on driving conditions,” he says.

The car travels well, too: “A few years ago, we completed a round trip to the Grand Canyon, gaining over 7,000 feet in elevation along the way in a car with a 29-horsepower engine carrying two adults and their luggage.”

•1984 2CV –– “The 2CV, starting in 1948, was to France what the Beetle was to Germany after WW II: giving modest people a tool to haul people and things at a moderate cost,”

says Legeai, who was schooled at the Paris Culinary Academy.

He is retired now in Arizona.

“The 2CV was my mother’s first car, and it took us everywhere for years. As I grew up, I needed to have a 2CV. Call it nostalgia? But beyond that, this car has the ability to put you in a poetic mood.”

He came to the U.S. when he was 21 and spent his working life in the restaurant industry. In 1987, he and wife Jacqueline, who is also French, opened their restaurant in the Chicago area. “We acquired our first 2CV that same year,” says Legeai, “and it quickly became a great asset for our bistro.”

•1986 CX –– Harlan Cone says some fellow Citroën owners believe this was the company’s last true model, released just prior to the Peugeot buy-out, which created much shared styling. A replacement for the DS, this was also the last car designed for the car-maker by Robert Opran.

The CX had many versions, from base models, a wagon and the longer and expensive Prestige, he explains. The Prestige had the comfort of the DS and the steering from the SM with a choice of manual or automatic such as the one in his car.

The CX was discontinued in 1990 and was replaced by the XM. He found this one in 2016 when owner Dave Burnham in New York had it in his shop and posted a photo of the import plate online with Cone’s late father’s name on it. So Burnham connected him with the owner, Fran Voigt, who had to sell his

cars because of poor health. Cone worked out a deal to sell his 1972 D Special in exchange for a special price on the CX. “The funny thing is when my ’86 CX Prestige was new, I remember it when I was a kid because this one was sold new to a kind gentleman in California whom my parents were friends with,” Cone recalls. “When the car came in, they were in their other home out of the country. So, they told my parents to drive it around as if it was their car for a while. ‘Then when we get back home you can deliver it to us’ they said.’”

He remembers being in the backseat of this car as a child going to Disneyland. “I bet my dad must be proud that I have a car he brought into the country back in the ’80s.”

•1973 SM –– The Citroën SM appeared in three series, SB, SC and SD. SBs had a 2.7-liter engine and triple-Weber 2barrel DCNF 40 carburetors. Series SC cars were equipped with a 2.7-liter engine and a then-advanced Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection system, explains owner John Titus, who owns three other Citroens.

The most-powerful SDs had a 3.0-liter engine equipped with triple DCNF 42 Weber carburetors. The engine produced 180 horsepower SAE net, which, in conjunction with the highly aerodynamic shape, gave it an impressive top speed of 145 mph, he says.

In 1968 Citroën purchased a controlling interest in Maserati,

benefiting both companies. The one gained access to the Italian carmaker’s engine technology for its new GT car, which would become the SM, and Maserati used the French company’s hydraulic knowhow in the Bora, Merak and Khamsin.

“Unfortunately, the 1974 oil embargo could not have come at a worse time,” Titus explains. “Citroën was strapped for cash, and demand for luxury GT cars in Europe and North America crashed.” By 1975 Citroën was bankrupt; its shares in Maserati were sold to Fiat and it was absorbed into the French national car company PSA. Citroën produced just 12,920 SMs, 1,600 of which were the 3.0L model; however, of the 3.0L model, only 600 were equipped with a 5-speed transmission, including his. The rest had a 3-speed Borg Warner Type 35 automatic transmission.

Titus knew the previous owner in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. He settled there after serving during WWII in the 8th United States Army Air Force as a waist gunner in a B-17 Flying Fortress, “Lady Lorraine.” His performance earned him membership in the “Lucky Bastards Club” by surviving 30 bombing missions over Nazi Germany, Titus says. “He became sort of a personal hero of mine.”

An Opportunity (Zone) in the Desert West Phoenix region represents a wealth of Opportunity Zones for development written by Nick Esquer If you look around the Greater Phoenix area, it’s not hard to notice the massive growth from corner to corner. Whether it’s new retail developments or housing units in the southeast valley or the high rises going up in downtown Phoenix or the broadening freight corridor striking through the west valley, there’s plenty of growth potential in practically every industry. And now, many of these areas have been further enhanced by the creation of Opportunity Zone legislation, to provide even more benefits to desirable projects.

The growth potential associated with these zones have many Cities engaging the investment community with an unprecedented value proposition. While both exciting and robust, this has the potential to create a bottleneck of timelines and requirements that have not been historically navigated. Foreseeing this scenario, an otherwise unlikely group of professionals have linked arms to create a team that can be a one-call solution to the investor and project developer to ensure the timelines required by the funds are met. to complete these unique projects on a stressed timeline.

In an online interview some of the team had interesting thoughts to share as these funds have just started to take their journey to becoming a project, “Opportunity Zones do not make a bad project good, but they make a good project great”, Aaron Banda with CBIZ shared. Suzanne Boyles with the City of Buckeye also shared, “Working with this unified group of professionals has brought early momentum to the City of Buckeye and the collaboration is like nothing we have seen before – truly all parties win with this type of approach.”

Arizona was one of the first states in the country to designate these opportunity zones under the Federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which is overseen by the U.S. Treasury Department. The development program was designed to boost long-term investment into qualifying Census tracts, providing tax incentives on capital gains monies invested into these zones.

Opportunity funds in the program are organized as a corporation or partnership, which in turn invest in Qualified Opportunity Zone properties. From office space to retail to industrial projects, practically every major industry that’s seen a rise in development in Arizona can take advantage of this. Investors can defer tax on any previous gains invested in a Qualified Opportunity Fund (QOF) until the date on which the investment in a QOF is sold or exchanged.

To illustrate these points more actively, let’s look at the City of Buckeye, mentioned above. Buckeye, the west valley suburb of about 85,000 people has been recognized as the fastestgrowing city in the United States by the US Census (i.e. growth rate of 8.5%) and has been praised for its opportunity for commercial growth and opportunity zones.

“In general, we deal with investors who put their money into an asset and expect to hold it for a short duration,” says Sheila Bale, Cushman & Wakefield. “This is attracting investors who can afford to hold these assets for the full 10 years and that is bringing new investors to new projects.”

To help build out opportunity zones, there are Qualified Opportunity Funds available to be used as investment vehicles, organized as a corporation or partnership. The sole purpose of this is to invest in Qualified Opportunity Zone properties, such as the three Census tracks in the city of Buckeye which cover an estimated 100 square miles of land.

“Interacting with the development team early on and understanding the specific challenges with these sites are a great benefit to the project’s overall budget goals,” notes Steve Goodman, Architecture Expert. “Many times, these areas are in core community sites and we can get extremely creative in capturing that culture and incorporating it into the design all while understanding those budget requirements.”

Collectively, the opportunity zones represent the commercial districts along the I-10, which provide commercial and mixed-use development opportunities at Verrado Way, Watson Road, and Miller Road. Next, there’s primary industrial rail districts, the airport employment district, and portions of Buckeye’s Historic Downtown, all providing a huge opportunity for investment due to their shared collective size.

All these together represent a rising tide of opportunity for investment, growth, and industrial development for not only Buckeye but the Greater Phoenix area as a whole.

Neighboring cities like Goodyear are also seeing more investors look into districts that represent the best growth potential for things like retail, industrial operations, housing, and technology. This is all good news for the region and those looking to grab hold and get involved in developing the future of the state’s opportunities.

Four Wheeled Horsepower Coming To The Best Polo Event In The World The 9th Annual Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships Races Into WestWorld Of Scottsdale November 2nd written by Michael A. Scerbo The unique combination of horses and horsepower is roaring back to the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships taking place November 2nd at WestWorld of Scottsdale.

A RS sport suspension with Dynamic Ride Control, is also available. These single-tube dampers have a variable characteristic that the driver can adjust in three stages. Hydraulic lines and a central valve link the diagonally opposed pairs of shock absorbers. When cornering at speed, the valves regulate the oil flow in the shock absorber of the springdeflected front wheel at the outside of the curve, which helps reduces pitch and roll movement, and improves handling.

Drivers can customize their driving experience through the standard Audi drive select system, which offers six drive modes: comfort, auto, dynamic, efficiency and the individually configurable RS-specific RS1 and RS2 modes, which can be activated directly using the “RS MODE” steering wheel button. The Audi drive select setting influences the engine and transmission management, the power steering, the suspension, the dynamic all-wheel steering, the quattro® sport differential and the engine sound. Exterior The exterior design of the all-new RS 6 Avant is made solely of RS-specific parts. The body, which has been widened around 1.6 inches on each side with broad flared wheel arches, underscores the athleticism of the high-performance Avant. The RS 6 Avant features the new RS design language. The three-dimensional RS-specific honeycomb structure within the Singleframe grille is finished in gloss black. Ironstone Concours D’Elegance Holds 23rd Event September 28 written by David M. Brown The 100th anniversary of Bentley, American Motors AMXs, Hudsons and race cars will be honored Saturday, September 28, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., during the 23rd Ironstone Concours D’Elegance at Ironstone Vineyards and Winery, 1894 Six Mile Road, just outside the historic gold-rush town of Murphys, California.

The owners of Ironstone Vineyards, farmers and vintners Gail and John Kautz began the event to help young people stay involved in agriculture for their careers.

Accordingly, proceeds benefit the 4-H, Future Farmers of America (FFA) and California State Fair Scholarship.

Annually, the car entrants also donate funds to send students to summer camp and other educational programs.

Approximately 5,000 people are expected, and more than 325 antique, classic and vintage motorcars, trucks, farm equipment, motorcycles and amphicars will be shown and judged in 30 classes for vehicles 1973 and earlier.

“Last year, donations allowed children to attend summer camps, such as Camp Tweedy, as well as educational programs held at the state capital in Sacramento,” says Anna Sass, spokeswoman for the event. To date, the concours has raised more than $1 million dollars for these student programs.

A Best in Show, Best in Class and special awards will be given. Judges designate a percentage of the cars in each class to receive a ribbon indicating an “Award of Merit.”

From that group, they designate one vehicle “Best of Class.”

“Join us for good food and drink, beautiful cars and the beautiful grounds at Ironstone Vineyards, and having the 4H and FFA students at the event just makes it so personal,” Sass notes.

Last year, a 1928 Isotta Fraschini, built by the luxury Milan-based carmarker, from the collection of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco was Best of Show.

On Friday, the day before the concours, the third Ironstone Vintage Back Roads Tour takes participants through Calaveras County, ending at New Melones Lake for lunch on a boat.

That night, the Cars & Stars Dinner returns at the winery.

On Saturday, the Concours d’Elegance Patron’s Tent and Luncheon takes place.

1931 Bentley is Best of Show at 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance written by David M. Brown W.O. Bentley got a big birthday present during this, the centennial year of his great marque.

RM Sotheby’s Monterey Auction leader was a 1994 McLaren F1 LM-Spec car for $19,805,000, the pinnacle sale for Monterey Car Week and a new auction record for the marque. At Gooding & Company, the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, the top seller was a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider, $9,905,000.

The 2019 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance awarded its Best of Show –– one of the world’s most prestigious automotive accolades –– to a 1931 Bentley 8 Litre Gurney Nutting Sports Tourer, owned by The Honorable Sir Michael Kadoorie of Hong Kong.

Topping all sales at Russo and Steele was a 1955 MercedesBenz 300SL Gullwing, which brought $1.21 million. At Mecum Auctions, a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, with Ferrari Classiche Certification, topped the docket, selling for $2,750,000.

On Sunday, August 18, the 88-year-old classic competed against 216 classic cars from 17 countries and 31 states on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach, the site of the world’s premier showcase of car elegance and performance. The honor succeeded a Class F-4 win that afternoon in judged Bentley competition and completion of the earlier Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance.

Bonhams’ Quail Lodge Auction was highlighted by Lot 152, a 1951 Ferrari 340 America Coupe Special by Vignale, in single family ownership for the last 50 years, selling for $3,635,000. To lead Mecum Auctions sales, a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 coupe brought $2,750,000. And, Worldwide Auctioneers sold a beautiful 1898 Riker Electric Stanhope Runabout for $605,000 to top its sales.

Preceding this climactic event of Monterey Car Week, the annual auctions, concours and other events provided visitors an opportunity to buy, sell and just enjoy some of the world’s great vehicles.

Bonhams’ 22nd annual auction, held with the prestigious The Quail, A Motorsport Gathering, brought $32 million from 217 cars during the expanded two-day event.

The seven all-red Ferraris in the Ming Collection sold successfully, led by a rare 2006 Ferrari FXX, $3,525,000, setting a new world record for the model at auction.

Completing the top four were a 1953 FIAT 8V Supersonic once owned by American motorsport legend Briggs Cunningham, $1,625,000; a 1965 Shelby 427 Cobra, $1,380,000; and a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, $1,347,500.

Furthering the company’s efforts to give back to the city in which it operates, RM Sotheby’s sold a Richard Mille RM11-03 watch, donated by the watchmaker, with all proceeds to benefit the RM Children’s Treatment Center of ChathamKent Fund. The watch sold for $216,000.

“Our breadth of selection this year was truly impressive,” says auctioneer and Bonhams Group Motoring Director Rupert Banner. “There was something for everyone, from every era and focus. The market is proving selective, and we saw passionate bidding on the very best collectors’ cars, while modern classics brought strong interest.”

“We remain cautiously optimistic about the strength of the collector car market and plan to work diligently with our global clients to effectively navigate the market as it finds balance,” Ken Ahn, president, RM Sotheby’s, says.

Jakob Greisen, Bonhams VP of Motoring, adds, “We had lots of international bidding, which resulted in a strong sell-through rate, and we witnessed the strength of youngtimer cars –– a boon for the hobby and the industry as a whole.”

And, Gord Duff, global head of Auctions, RM Sotheby’s, adds: “While there was an undertone of measured restraint through-out all the auctions over the weekend, it was encouraging to see record-breaking results for many of the highlight consignments as well as for outstanding collectable, lower-value examples in the auction. We are confident that as long as the passion for collector cars remains, the market will continue to support it with price-reflective transactions.”

RM Sotheby’s sold a total of $107 million across the threenight sale, with buyers from 43 countries.

Recently fully restored by Roos Engineering in Switzerland, the 1965 James Bond Aston Martin DB5 brought $6,385,000 during “An Evening with Aston Martin”; this is one of just three surviving James Bond DB5 examples outfitted with the legendary MI6 Q Branch-specified gadgetry seen in Goldfinger and used in the promotion of Thunderball.

Concorso Italiano, Concours at Pasadera & The Quail, A Motorsports Event The 34th annual Concorso Italiano hosted a record number of attendees who enjoyed approximately $200 million in classic Italian cars and 500-plus works of Italian automotive art on greens of the Black Horse Golf Course.

Samuel Chuffart, vice president and Global Design director of Icona, presented Ron Corradini with the Best in Show award for his Ferrari. Among the other honors was the Preservation Award in honor of Doug Magnon, given to Carlann and Joe Duray for their 1962 Maserati 3500 and the “La Bella Macchina” hall-of-fame award, presented to Mario Carlo Baccaglini, the chairman of the most important show in Italy for classic cars, Auto e Moto d’Epoca in Padova.

Also at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, the Best Paddock Display went to Gregg Caban in Formula Ford Group for his ’70s hippie era-themed paddock space with his 1975 Konig Heath Nomad. The Ken Miles Trophy, remembering the great driver and given for the best representation of a vintage car under 1500cc, went to San Francisco’s Mark Osborne for his 1959 Rejo Mk IV in Group 2A. In addition, the Henry Ford Trophy, for the most significant Ford-powered entry, sponsored by Ford Motor Company, was given to Todd Willing, East Melbourne, Australia, and his 1972 Merlyn Mk 20A Formula Ford. Recalling a pioneer Corvette champion, the John Fitch Corvette Excellence, sponsored by Chevrolet, went to the 1976 Greenwood Corvette driven by Jordan Taylor and owned by Eric Rotrier, Beziers, France.

The Concorso Italiano celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Ferrari Dino and the Iso Rivolta Lele, as well as the 70th anniversary of Abarth and the 60th anniversary of DeTomaso.

New cars shown were the W Motors Fenyr SuperSport, a limited production hypercar built by W Motors, a Dubaibased company; the DeTomaso Automobili DeTomaso P72; and the New Stratos by MAT (Manifattura Automobili Torino) built on a Ferrari F430 base as a tribute to the legendary Lancia of the ’70s.

Finally, the Phil Remington Award, honoring a great mechanic and fabricator, sponsored by Ford Motor Company, was given to Jay Ivy, Portland, Oregon. The Monterey Reunion Pre-War Trophy, sponsored by the Gary Byrd Foundation, was accepted

by Nigel Batchelor, London, for his 1928 Bentley Tourer 4.5 Litre. Finally, Awards of Excellence were given in each race category, as determined by an independent panel of judges.

Owned by Joseph and Margie Cassini of New Jersey, the 1931 Stutz DV 32 Convertible was selected from more than 250 entrants at the Quail Lodge & Golf Club. The Spirit of The Quail was given to a 1957 Ferrari 335S owned by Cavallino Investments, Ohio.

This year’s three special competition classes included “100 Years of Bentley Motors,” in tribute to the 100th anniversary of the great British marque. This was won by a 1928 Bentley 4.5-Litre VDP Tourer, owned by David McGirr, Connecticut.

“The 25th Anniversary of the McLaren F1” named a 1996 McLaren F1 LM, owned by Frank Martin, Illinois, first place. And, “A Tribute to the Electric Car Movement,” showcased electric cars throughout history, including a unique 1965 Volkswagen Beetle Zelectric Sedan electric car prototype.
