Message from the headteacher

As you know we provide informal updates through our assemblies on YouTube.

Over the last two weeks we have focused much energy into planning for the return to school of Y10 and 12 students. We have spent some time putting together a comprehensive set of answers to frequently asked questions. We will be sending that document to families of Y10 and 12 students on Friday evening in the hope that it will help them reach a decision about their child. We will require those families to sign up their child for return to school in June by Monday noon to give us time to plan. Given the wide variance of opinions on returning to school, we do not expect to please all parents/carers. We have, however, proposed arrangements which we feel are in the best interests of students.

It goes without saying that most of our students continue to learn online. You may be aware that Highfields School has received a number of plaudits about its online provision. This does not mean that we are complacent and teachers continue to receive daily training and ideas about how to maximise online learning. We are aware that some students are struggling to learn online and we are in touch with these families. If you require help please do not hesitate to contact your child’s head of year, year manager, or simply email wearehighfields@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk and we will direct your email to the best person.

The discussion about George Floyd this week between parents/carers, students and staff has demonstrated the ability of our community to reflect, debate and learn from one another. I feel very privileged to be part of the Highfields ‘family’. We are always ready to learn and improve but, currently, there is much to be proud of about our school and its wonderful students and staff.

We are … Highfields.
