Highfields wins top prize in national competition to encourage reading In recognition of its work to encourage reading for pleasure, Highfields School has been awarded a top prize in a national competition run by the Siobhan Dowd Trust.¹ School librarians across the country were asked "what do you do to engage hard to reach readers?". The Siobhan Dowd Trust were clearly impressed with our efforts and initiatives to get students reading, as they have awarded us a prize of £500 to be spent at a local, independent bookshop.

Four students from Years 7 and 8 accompanied library staff on a book shopping spree at Scarthin Bookshop in Cromford last week to select the new books for the school library. “It was massively enjoyable and the range of books was wonderful!” said Year 8 student, Andrew Chang.

“The students really enjoyed visiting the bookshop”, said library staff member, Mrs Robinson.

“Scarthin Books is a magical place and it was a privilege to witness their enthusiasm and delight in being able to choose new books for the library. We work hard across the school to promote reading for pleasure and are hugely grateful to the Siobhan Dowd Trust for selecting Highfields as a prize winner.”

"The judges were very impressed by the range of approaches used at Highfields to encourage the joy of reading,” explained Kate Powling, Director of The Siobhan Dowd Trust. “What particularly stood out was the reader survey of Year 7's when they joined the school, and the effort the library staff went to, to get to know their young people and their reading habits.”

Independent research consistently shows that reading for pleasure can transform a child’s performance in school in all subjects. Highfields adopts a wide range of initiatives and approaches to promote the joy of reading, including reader surveys, reading challenges, author visits, book clubs, and special events such as poetry slams and “Desert Island Books” sessions held throughout the school year. “The school library has never been busier,” said Mrs Robinson. “There is a real buzz about reading throughout the school and the students are thrilled to have the latest titles on the shelves!”

Mrs L Robinson (Starkholmes Library) ¹ The Siobhan Dowd Trust was established by the author Siobhan Dowd shortly before her death. The Trust uses the income from Siobhan's books to support projects which bring the joy of reading to children and young people in the UK.

Christmas Concerts Highfields held its annual Christmas concerts on the 6 and 7 December. The events showcased the enormous musical talent at the school, featuring folk, classical, jazz and contemporary items, many of which were completely student-led. The Senior Orchestra opened both evenings with their rendition of ‘White Christmas’ and the Wind Band kicked off the second half with the very festive ‘Christmas Fantasia’ directed by Mr Stacey.

There were stand out performances on both nights and we celebrated our Year 13 ‘leavers’ Hannah Redfern captivating the audience with ‘Popular’ from the musical Wicked and Chloe Arbury breathing new life into the modern-day Adele classic ‘Set Fire To The Rain’. Both nights featured Highfields’ long established Friday Night Group - a student run ensemble performing traditional folk music and the lower school Junior Choir really energised proceedings, sporting animal masks for their interpretation of classic ‘Lion King’ songs.

Following the concerts, the Junior and Senior Choirs joined forces with students from Sharley Park primary school and performed musical items to accompany a service celebrating Derbyshire carers at the Crooked Spire in Chesterfield. As well ensemble items the event also featured solos from Beth Harrison and Sam Hall in Year 12 who came together for the lighthearted and touching Christmas classic ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’. Mrs Morris wrapped things up with a spine-tingling performance of ‘O Holy Night’ and the audience left the spire decidedly more Christmassy.

The two nights were the culmination of many hours’ worth of rehearsal and planning and the Music department would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated and hardworking students. We wish all a Merry Christmas and a happy 2017!

Sports Update Sports Fixtures: We are looking forward seeing our students continuing to participate and achieve in a range of sporting events locally and Nationally in the new year. The remaining fixtures scheduled for the final week of term are listed below.

Congratulations to all students for their amazing achievements this term!

Monday 12 December 2016: We are competing in the North East Derbyshire Swimming Gala at Sharley Park. We will be taking teams for all year groups and they will be competing in both individual and team events. Other schools involved are Tupton, Dronfield, Westfield, Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar and Eckington.

Wednesday 14 December 2016: The first team have a rugby match away versus Derby Grammar School - 2.15pm kick off.

Thursday 15 December 2016: To top off the first half of the School Football season we have three football fixtures during Thursday afternoon: • Year 8 Boys and the under 16 Girls are away at Ecclesbourne School, the Boys are in the quarter final of the County and it is a National Cup fixture for the Girls.

• Our under 16 Futsal team are representing Highfields in the County Finals at Derby University.

Sports Results: We had a great afternoon in the Derbyshire Dales Cross Country Championships over in Ashbourne. There were hundreds of competitors from across the Dales competing, and our students showed grit and determination and once again were a credit to the school. The following students performed exceptionally well and have been selected to represent Rural Derbyshire in the County Cross Country Championships in January: Will Prime – 10, Shona Connell – 12, Ellie Goodhall – 7, Sophie Bent – 8, Ellen Cross – 11, Jess Lindridge – 2, Isobel Lester – 3, Finlay Hill - 6 and Jacob Rifkin - 10.

Cross Country Results: Y10/11 Boys: Logan Toplis – 15, Alfie Winch – 16, Sam Boshier - 18 and Danny McCrae – 19.

Y10/11 Girls: (included in students selected to represent Rural Derbyshire – above).

Sports Leaders Our Sports Leaders and Sports Apprentices support Sporting activities not only in school, but also within our partner primary schools and across the wider community. Each week we will provide a summary of their recent activities.

Jill Eaton (CEO of Sporting Futures) visited school on Friday 2 December to award the PE and School Sport Apprentices their well-earned qualifications from 2015-16.

James Bates, Sam May and Andy Brough qualified with advanced level apprenticeships level 3.

James was here to receive his award and Sam and Andy will receive theirs at a later date (Andy is currently working in Dubai working as an outdoor instructor).

Jordan Spencer, Tom Savage and David Molyneux received their level 2 activity leadership.

Highfields secure the following projects for 2017: • Beyond the Baseline – Tennis Project • Junior Athlete Education Project • Girls Active Camp • Girls Active Innovation • Girls Active Innovation Project Sky Living for Sport rewards for Teachers – we have won £300 worth of tickets for two staff and eight students to attend a top class sporting evening in 2017.

Highfields School Governing Body Governors’ skills and experience Highfields School is fortunate in the kinds of people who have volunteered to become Governors, each brining a variety of skills and experience to support the school.

Meet your Governors This week our profile is on Ranald Macdonald one of our Co-Chairs of Governors:

I am Co-Chair of the Highfields School Governing Body and Chair of the Teaching and Learning Committee, as well as being on the Student and Community Links Committee and Strategy Monitoring Group.

I have a lifelong interest in education as an adult educator and university teacher and leader and am committed to providing meaningful learning opportunities for all. In 2009 I took early retirement from Sheffield Hallam University but remain an Emeritus Professor in Academic Development there.

My interests include music (including playing cello in the band for my wife's Appalachian Dance group), the outdoors generally (I have a young Border Collie who needs lots of exercise), orienteering, cycling, cooking and extensive travel in our campervan.

Parent/Carer Notices 16 December – Christmas Jumper Day The last day of term (Friday 16 December) is Christmas Jumper Day and students will be able to wear Christmas jumpers / non-uniform for a donation of £1. The money collected will be split between Save the Children (https://christmasjumperday.org/) and school funds to contribute to student activities on the last day of term.

Christmas Holiday A reminder that school closes to students at 3.30pm on Friday 16 December 2016 for the Christmas holidays. Students will return to school on Wednesday 4 January 2017.

Students are not expected in school on Monday 19 December, Tuesday 20 December 2016 or Tuesday 3 January 2017 as these are INSET days.

We would like to wish you all an enjoyable break over the holidays and a happy New Year.

Year 9 and Year 11 Immunisations (all students) As you may be aware, from September 2015 the NHS outsourced its programme for some vaccinations and these will now be delivered in school through the School Age Immunisation Service (SAIS) for Derbyshire by NHS staff, rather than at your GP surgery.

We have been contacted by the Immunisation Team to confirm they will be offering vaccinations to all Year 9 and Year 11 students on 1 March 2017 for the following: • The Meningococcal ACWY (MenACWY) vaccine – this vaccine protects against four different types of meningococcal bacteria that can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain) and septicaemia (blood poisoning). These diseases are very serious and can kill if not diagnosed early.

• The Teenage Booster vaccine – this vaccine helps to protect against diphtheria, tetanus and polio. Diphtheria is a serious disease that can damage the heart and nervous system and in severe cases can kill. Tetanus is a painful disease affecting the nervous system which can lead to muscle spasms, causing breathing problems and can kill. Polio is a virus that attacks the nervous system which can cause permanent paralysis of muscles. If it affects the chest muscles or the brain, polio can kill.

A consent form and letter will be given to your child next week for consent to be vaccinated against these diseases. Please discuss the immunisations and consent with your son/daughter and return to school by Friday 16 December 2016. This is to enable the vaccine to be ordered by the Immunisation Team ready for the immunisations. A consent form must be returned for every student to confirm if you wish or do not wish your child to receive these vaccinations.

Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiry (Form Tutor) The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is the Form Tutor. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the Form Tutor, this can be followed-up with the relevant Head of Year.

We encourage parents/carers to keep in touch with tutors by using the student planner.

There is a space at the end of each week where parents/carers can write a note to the tutor.

Subject specific enquiry (Subject Teacher) If parents/carers have subject specific enquiries, we ask that they contact the relevant subject teacher. If parents/carers feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the class teacher, this can be followed-up by the relevant Head of Department.

Parents/carers can contact us on the main school number (see below). Reception staff will aim to help with queries or refer parents/carers to a member of staff who can.
