hat a year in weed it has been in michigan. To think that in the time of one short year, the fine people of Michigan have become part of history opening up our state to adult recreational Cannabis sales. We went from medical Cannabis only to the ability to purchase with your drivers license or state ID in under a year. WOW! I, along with my two partners decided to start Higher Living magazine to address the questions and expectations of the Canna Curious. We have a lot of fun with our content. I mean, how can we not? We write about weed, beer and spirits and favorite local hangs. For example, along with the coverage of adult recreational sales in this month’s issue we explore in and around Flint and share a map to the great times for you. You never know, we might cross paths. We also pack this issue full of Cannabis inspired recipes and concoctions. In addition to the magazine, December celebrates the launch of our website and gets us ready to launch the Higher Living app and YouTube channel in the middle of January. We can’t wait to share even more real life fun with fans of Higher Living. Chad Johnston Editor

nuggets The first and most important news... is that adult recreational sales are happening in michigan TODAY. At press time there were four state licensed provisioning centers that are up and running as of December 1st. Illinois is getting set up to follow michigan in the new year for adult recreational sales. It looks like some time in January, 2020, will have the Windy City lighting up, legally. There are many communities in Illinois that have opted out of adult rec sales, just like in michigan.

OK Boomer... Republican Congressman matt Gaetz had a message for Kellyanne Conway’s comments on marijuana when he appeared on CNN’s Smerconish show. His response to Conway’s April comments... “There are many health professionals and employers increasingly concerned that this is not your grandfather or your father’s marijuana. The TCH components are much stronger.” To my friend Kellyanne Conway, I would say: OK, Boomer. I mean that’s a very Boomer approach to marijuana, if for no other reason that it’s actually THC, not TCH,” Gaetz said, adding that her position showed a “real ignorance to the science.” By the way Kellyanne, it’s THC (not TCH) and that is not an alternate fact. 6

John Sinclair kicks off... the adult recreational sales of Cannabis in michigan. It was great to see the weed pioneer, activist and poet get to be the first sale in adult rec. See page 14 for the full article.

Adult use clubs are sprouting up... all over michigan. While we don’t disclose where these under-the-radar clubs are in Higher Living, they are very easy to find with a few clicks. We can tell you that it’s so fun to buy and toke in the same location.

Tenacity is coming... Flint’s Tenacity Brewing sets eyes on Detroit for a second location. Expect to see them in the D sometime in 2020.

As of press time... the State of michigan has halted all sales of vape cartridges in licensed provisioning centers. There are several reasons including re-testing for Vitamin E Acetate and various heavy metals. When cartridge sales are re-instated, all ingredients, including inactive ingredients used in production, will be clearly listed in the packaging. Last month we told you about a DIY method of making your own vape cartridges with Wax Liquidizer. If you are left hangin’ while the State and retailers get it together on cartridge sales, this can get you by.

The end of an era... The War on Drugs, or at least Cannabis, is over in michigan (thanks to the majority vote by michigan residents). Just in time to roll in 2020.

Legal Adult Sales

are here! L

et Higher Living walk you through buying Cannabis legally with only your drivers license or state ID. On December 1st, the first few provisioning centers in approved cities will be able to sell recreational adult use Cannabis. This is exciting news and shows why the collective millions of hours by legal marijuana proponents will all be worth it. Here is how it works. On November 1st, michigan provisioning centers (another descriptor for retail weed shops) were able to apply for their adult recreational use license. The first one in and approved was Exclusive Provisioning Center in Ann Arbor. At press time the other adult legal sales provisioning centers are Arbors Wellness, Greenstone Provisions and michigan Supply and Provisions (just north of Ohio border) . While this is far from the entire picture, it gives us a glimpse into what is to come. So, let’s head on in together and discover this brave new world.

make sure you are carrying your drivers license or state ID with you, because without that, you are out of luck. After your ID is checked, expect to process through a kiosk and opt in/out on text specials, notifications and rewards point tracking. Right now, this will likely be the process of getting to the goods. After you are in, behold the efforts and cash that michigan Cannabis retailers have put into their storefronts. It has been a huge outlay and that’s before the first recreational Cannabis sale has been made. Higher Living recommends going in with a purchase wish list, because there are A LOT of choices inside. Are you a flower girl? Do you even know what that means? The friendly budtenders are here to help you find what is right for you, but SO mANY CHOICES. Let us break down just some of the options for the new Cannasumer.

Flower The traditional way of buying weed. Usually in a tight bud format that finds its way into a pipe or bong, or ground up and rolled into the traditional Joint. Options here are the strain, flavor and strength. In general, Indica is a mellow strain and Sativa tends to add levity to your situation. There are hybrid strains that mix the effects of Indicas and Sativas.

Concentrates - We could spend an entire issue on concentrates, but we will break it down in a paragraph here. Basically, many methods are used to concentrate THC into a potent, sticky and strong product. Concentrates are typically sold by the half and full gram. The methods of consuming concentrates is through dabbing (a very hot smoking device to vaporize the concentrate) or mixing in with flower while smoking. Concentrates also make a killer base for home made edibles.

9

|

HigherLivingToday.com

Edibles - There are so many options for edibles, it can be mind numbing. The breakdown is easy for adult recreational use sales in michigan. Packages can only be up to 100mg of THC, per package. So if you get a package of ten gummy bears, each one will be 10mg. As always, go in easy and slow with any edible. You can always eat more. Expect about a half an hour to hour and a half for an edible to reach full effect. Higher Living

Vaping Cartridges - This Uber-popular category is plentiful in the modern day provisioning center. Vape cartridges are made using a concentrate as a base and adding components that liquidize the concentrate for use with low power vape batteries. All vape cartridges sold at a michigan State licensed provisioning center are lab tested, so you know you are getting safe products devoid of heavy metals and filler products like Vitamin E. *Currently being re-tested and re-labeled for michigan sales.

Beverages - Right now in michigan we have a few choices of THC enhanced beverages with more sure to come. There will be no alcohol and Cannabis cross-pollinations for the foreseeable future (unless you use one of our recipes to make it for yourself).

New hours of operatioN

M-Th 11aM-8pM F-Sa 11aM-10pM

Topical Solutions - Transdermal patches have been making a splash for the management of localized pain. Creams, balms, lip sticks, and lotions are a few of other products within this category. There are even products that enhance intimacy. If it’s right for you, get into a Michigan adult legal sales provisioning center and check out the buzz! And... remember that this is only the beginning for legal Cannabis sales in Michigan.

Keeping your card is high on the priority list S

tarting this month and coming fully online into 2020, michigan’s adult legal sales is finally here. Announced in mid November 2019, about a dozen retailers will be able to open their doors to michigan’s adult legal sales of Cannabis on December 1st. First thoughts from many will be not renewing their medical State Card. We would like to throw in a couple of points that might have you re-think your decision. The first reason is choice. With so many provisioning centers up and running as medical and the constant adjustment of the state guidelines, your favorite place to pick up your weed might stay medical only. Also, it is going to be a slow rollout for adult legal sales. Our prediction is a mixture of medical and adult legal sales will co-exist for at least a couple of years in the State. If michigan follows trends from other adult legal sale states we will ultimately be tilted to more adult legal sales rather than medical. How long will that take? Who knows. The good thing is if you keep your

card, both channels of obtaining Cannabis remain open to you. The next point is drug testing. First and foremost, if you smoke weed and drive you are just being selfish. Please don’t do it. There are however, communities starting to implement roadside swabbing from police that may show residual positive results even many hours after last use. Having your card could help you out from the beginning on a roadside stop. Also, employers that drug test are slowly but surely loosening restrictions to medical marijuana patients. The price for the card has went down considerably, so there are very few reasons not to keep it. medical supplies of Cannabis are being treated as the number one priority from the State, so keeping your card will give you access to the medicine that you need. All in all, staying state certified for medical Cannabis use is the smart bet for right now. If you don’t want to hassle with a certification card, you might need to search around a bit for an adult legal sales establishment.

...it is going to be a slow rollout for adult legal sales.

Ann Arbor Kicks Off Adult Rec Sales

A

dult Recreational marijuana Sales is now a real thing in michigan. At least at a few state licensed provisioning centers. After a sleepless night in anticipation and the impending weather alerts that were focused around freezing rain and icy roads, we were happy to find the roads all clear. Setting out to Ann Arbor we were eager to see how fellow michiganders and those from out of state would embrace adult recreational sales. We decided to start our coverage at Exclusive Provisioning on Varsity Drive. Exclusive was the first in on state licensing and received the most publicity surrounding their opening of legal adult recreational sales. As we were driving to the office park setting where Exclusive resides, we were wondering if it would be busy, especially considering the weather. As we rounded the corner, there were people everywhere. So, we went right to doing what we do, photographing, shooting video and

14

|

HigherLivingToday.com

interviewing fine folks. We met people from surrounding states that travelled to michigan to be part of the first weed sales in the Midwest. In fact, first in line at Exclusive were customers from Ohio who camped out in the weather the previous night. Another group from Indiana was in a party mood after swinging through Chicago on the way. It was worth pointing out to this crew that Chicago and Ann Arbor are

in opposite directions. It didn’t matter to them a bit and they just kept the party rolling in the hundreds deep line. Every minute, it seemed like the line grew by 10 to 20 people. After feeling the vibe of this massive crowd of history makers, we sadly had to leave all of these party people and roll on. Next up was Greenstone Provisioning one street off from the main drag in Ann Arbor. As we rounded the corner, it was a totally different scene with the same theme. Greenstone is in a historic house on South Ashley and at first we thought the large line was on the sidewalk only. Little did we know that it wrapped around the back and through an alley.

The first sale to Nick St. Onge from Clinton Township, inside Arbors Wellness Center. The Greenstone crew was rolling out the hospitality with donuts and hot chocolate. The vibe of this event was positive and up beat. What I noticed in conversations was one word coming up again and again FINALLY!

inside to cover the first sale. Happily inside, we made our way into the retail section and found many members of the press jockeying for a position to get their story out. We also witnessed the first adult recreational sale to John Sinclair, the famous Cannabis activist and poet. Shortly after 10am the doors officially opened and we were there with the first sale to Nick St. Onge from Clinton

So many conversations about bogus weed convictions that have ruined people’s lives for nothing. That might sound like a bummer convo, but the optimism of moving past prohibition with the new reality was heard from everyone, loud and clear. We ended up at Arbors Wellness for our final stop. Right in the middle of downtown Ann Arbor, another historic building houses Arbors Wellness. The line spilled out of the building, passed the hedgerow and around the block. The party was ON in downtown A2. Again, so many people stepping up and becoming players in history. After spending some quality time with the good peeps, including fist bumps with a local cop that was all smiles we headed 16

Township. 414 bucks was handed over in an exchange for a bag of Headmaster Kush and mint milano. And that was that. It’s on!

Albums of Note

I

f you are headed out for a day with the extended family, Higher Living magazine suggests the soundtrack for the beginning of your day. The selection should be topical and classic. We suggest Slayer, Hell Awaits! This classic metal album bathes in the themes of Hell and Satan, and what more could you want for getting a festive, family day started! All kidding aside (sort of), Hell Awaits is a quintessential metal album that will forever be a classic. If you can get your hands on some classic vinyl to spin backwards, you will be greeted by the declaration of “join us”. So, just like sitting at the kids table at age 32, Higher Living agrees - Hell Awaits.

O

ne thing I will never be accused of is playing too much Christmas music. Any, by too much, I mean none. But, not being a Grinch is a good thing and we dug up this classic from 2006 from one of our favorite artists. One more Drifter is the sixth album and first Christmas album by Aimee Mann. Aimee’s unique take on Christmas classics include a killer rendition of You’re a mean One, mr Grinch accompanied by Grant-Lee Phillips. mann’s decision to do a throwback, lounge-y record that is influenced by Mel Tormé, Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra, was a good one, as far as we are concerned. Check out some of Aimee’s other work including the amazing soundtrack from magnolia. But for now, enjoy the sounds of the season with One more Drifter.

Canna Crawl FLINT

T

he fine folks of Flint, Michigan, are some of the best people you will meet. The national news of crime and the water crisis keep many out of the city, but we’re here to tell you, if you are avoiding Flint, you are missing out. There is so much more to Flint than what the news let’s on. This months Canna Crawl explores Flint and the surrounding area. We get our crawl going at Freddie’s Provisioning Center in Clio (about 15 minutes north of Flint). This cool shop has everything we need to start our day off right. We grab some Gorilla Glue and head out. After getting back to the city center and dropping our vehicle, we start our ride share adventure around the city. First Stop is The Soggy Bottom Bar right on martin Luther King Blvd. The Soggy Bottom has a super cool, laid back vibe and a fun loving crew at the helm. The drinks go down smooth and believe me, they are plentiful. One of the favorites is the mystery Tap Handle. Bonus points, because it’s a bourbon barrel aged mystery handle at six bucks! Yes Please. You will love the old school neighborhood bar vibe complete with dim lighting and a dark wood vibe through out. We also grab a couple of their freakin’ fantastic sliders. Crab cake and fish slider for the win. Even though we could hang here all night, it is time to get a ride to our next stop. While we were outside waiting, we ran out of weed. Next stop is a re-supply to The Sweet Leaf on Dort Hwy. This

For the last few years, we’ve been perfecting what we call the ‘Canna Crawl’. Think of the Canna Crawl as similar to a traditional pub crawl. We take the time to research some of the most fun routes in Michigan and share them with you. Weed, Food, Beer and Fun.

shop has an efficient operation that makes getting your goods so easy. Once you get inside, the shop is clean and well organized. They also have a cool merch section, and this bald head needed a beanie for the adventure. All in all, we score a quarter of Birthday Cake, a couple packs of Gummies and the beanie. Good haul for sure.

“war on drugs”. No more. Back in the bar, it’s humming like our buzz and the staff is busy busy. We grab another drink and schedule the next ride. Churchill’s is highly recommended. We roll on to Tenacity Brewing right down the road. Tenacity is housed in an old fire station on Grand Traverse. This place is RAD! Still a little bit hungry, we were in the mood for

moving on we catch a ride back to Churchill’s downtown. With it’s proximity to the county courthouse this classic “lawyer bar” is anything but stuffy. The food and drink are exactly what you expect when you walk in a classic like this - Delicious. You have to wonder how many deals were made for marijuana convictions in this very place over an Old Fashioned and a steak. We cannot express our happiness over the end of prohibition enough. We decide to go out and spark up in our dedication to those scooped up in the fucking insane

check in on that Birthday Cake and make sure that it was burning. Once we headed in, we were again met by the nicest staff. It really hit me when I was thinking, “these people are so Flint”. The best part of that thought is “so Flint” is about the best people. After a couple of hours of Dio signs in the air we are ready to call it a night. Higher Living thanks Flint for rolling out the welcome mat - keep on keepin’ on.

The pre roll Lemon Haze that I had left in my pocket for our Detroit Canna Crawl. The hits keep coming. After again hitting the hospitality jackpot with Tenacity’s staff, we needed to roll on to the next “event”. Our ride left us off at The machine Shop (insert devil horns here). There is a cool show like always and we were up for some cheap ass beer and live, loud and proud music. Before we went in, we needed to

Tenacity

t h e n i F B i r s e u o H i o c us e a n e T H

oused in a former fire station in downtown Flint, Tenacity Brewing was conceived not by design, but by chance and a collective of circumstances that make it one of the state’s best up and coming breweries. Higher Living caught up with one of the owners, Robb and learned about this cool, DIY example of Flint grit and determination. Robb shared, “a business partner bought the building” and he told Robb about his new purchase - a fire station. “We went over to the building at about one in the morning after a few pops and checked it out. I thought, my wife would love it if I could rent the back room and move

28

|

HigherLivingToday.com

my home brew equipment out of my house.” Robb’s now-partner in Tenacity, Jason, was brought into the scene and they came up with a plan of setting up a brewery in the space. About a year and a half later they opened. Right from the start they focused on a cool tasting room and thought about distribution of the brand. Coming from an entrepreneurial background in the bar business, Robb was pretty familiar with how everything worked. As it turns out, Tenacity’s tasting room is their main gig. Good news for beer and cider lovers is that Tenacity is now distributing into some of your favorite

hotspots like the Fenton Fire Hall and The Corner Bar. Robb tells us that they distribute to less than twenty bars and are happy with that. Just like Higher Living, the spirit of rolling up your sleeves and living the DIY lifestyle runs through Tenacity. They even self distribute their liquid awesomeness. Robb tells us that there is a build-out in Detroit for the next step in the Tenacity story and they expect to have it open around April of 2020. They will be craft roasting coffee, distilling booze and brewing beer. What we can tell you right now is the new Detroit Tenacity Craft will be located in the New Center Area. Detroit peeps are in for a treat! The big story coming out of Flint the last few years has been all about the water crisis. We asked Robb about the opening of Tenacity along with the Flint water crisis. Because Tenacity opened in 2014, right at the pinnacle of initial public attention. Robb told us that Tenacity had a menu floating around the bar with brewing water test results. Good news for Tenacity patrons was a clean test. “We had a lot of conversations about that. most people, I would say 95%, had nothing to say about it. For the other 5% it was just something to talk about. There was a fraction of people who were concerned.” This was what was going on when they opened, but for the last couple of years, Robb tells us that it really never comes up. We talked about the crossover of weed and beer with Robb and learned a lot from his perspective. Robb is a caregiver for about five patients and likes it that way. As far as combining weed and beer, that’s not really his jam. He likes his beer to taste like beer and his weed to taste like weed. We can get down with that as long as Robb and crew continue to brew up tasty libations. Robb shares, “I feel like when

29

|

HigherLivingToday.com

everything is normalized and settles down, we will see how it’s going to go.” What we get from talking to Robb is that he is the kind of guy that has an open mind and is always paying attention. Higher Living had a great time on a Tuesday November night at Tenacity. We got there just in time for their Tuesday night Yoga and beer pairing. There is a cool multi use room up in the front corner and on this particular Tuesday there were about ten Yogis practicing. The best part of the Yoga class is getting a complimentary beer or cider at the end. To wrap it up, Tenacity Brewing needs to be on your radar and we thank Robb for sitting down over a beer to talk about Tenacity and what’s to come. Tenacity Brewing is located at 119 N Grand Traverse St, Flint (48503). Call (810) 3396676 or visit TenacityBrewing.com.

Let’s Talk

TERPENES T

he study of Terpenes in Cannabis are on fire right now. We would like invite you to follow along with what’s what with the “Terps”. Of course, we are gonna talk about some beer and weed pairings. It’s what we do. In a nutshell, Terpenes are the base aromatic component that we associate with smells and flavors of weed. In fact, Terpenes are one of the elements that gives all plants their smell and taste. Terpenes are found in the essential oils of plants. Knowing and discovering your Terps can be fun. If you are the culinary type you can learn so much about flavors form eight basic Terpenes. Follow along;

30

|

HigherLivingToday.com

CYE -

Caryophyllene

PNE - Pinene

This Pine scented terpene is so present in many of our every day smelling experiences. It is found in certain hops, pine, basil, dill, rosemary and other conerific smells. Tip back a Bell’s Two Hearted and spark up a Beethoven Kush, or any Kush for that matter and melt into the world of Pinene.

MYR - Myrcene

So many delicious smells and flavors in this Terp! From the mango and lemongrass forwardness to the earthy aroma of cloves. Citra Hopped beers are typically a place to experience the Wonder of myrcene. mango in a glass! We would reccomend - Arbor Brewing’s A Girl Named Egypt or Buzzsaw IPA and the great flavor of White Widow weed for a tropical trip.

LME - Limonene

All Citrus all Day! Limonene is the smell of citrus peels. That exciting flavor that you can’t quite put your finger on in Tom Yum soup - yep Limonene. Also, peppermint falls into this profile. Think of your favorite, fresh summer day with a Blakes Grizzly Pear and a few puffs of lemon haze. You be ALL GOOD IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD!

Earthy, pepper forward tastes with a dash of cinnamon. That about sums up this Terp. When you think of mulling spices, that’s Caryophyllene at is finest. A great multi pairing is Northville Rockin’ Cock hard cider, warmed with a spliff of Original Glue. And... for good measure a lil cinnamon flavored confectionary treat.

LNL - Linalool

This flower forward Terp will have you remembering the last time you walked by a lavender bush. Some would go as far to say that this is slightly medicinal, but in the best way. A great pairing for sweets. We would recommend checking out the Canna Honey recipe in our November issue @ higherlivingtoday.com/recipes. That is a great place to taste this Terp in action. We would recommend a great Gose like Batch Zrbtt and a crispy tasting Zkittlez for the win.

OCM - Ocimene

The fresh scents of mint, mangos, basil and nectarines Ocimene is the fruit and herb smoothie of the Terps. We also feel that this Terp lends itself to a complex Grapefruit vibe. So fresh and fancy free, an Old Nation Brewing m-43 and a Strawberry Cough are sure to light up your tastebuds. Higher Living

HUM - Humulene

This is the true home of the classic hop. As beer and weed lovers, Humulene hits us in all the right spots. Some of the other flavors in this Terp are cloves, allspice, basil and fennel. There is a perfect beer to go with this. Short’s Brewing Hummalumolicious. It’s the essence of the Terp. We love to burn Gelato along side.

TPE - Terpinolene

Another coniferous forward Terp that tips toward the tastes and smells of apples, nutmeg and tea tree. A perfect fall, mellow aroma. As long as we are at suggesting

32

|

HigherLivingToday.com

some great hard cider pairings, we follow suit with Tenacity Brewing’s delicious Honey Blu Blu cider and torch up the Chernobyl. This time it won’t be a world wide disaster.

Starting in this issue of Higher Living magazine, we are excited to bring you our new Canna Color Coding in all of our recipes. We will include a colored icon and the first three letters of the Terp that will tell you about the Terpenes that are present and highlighted by the dish or drink. Even if you omit the weed in any of our delicious concoctions, learning about the flavor and aroma profiles of Terpenes will get you on the right path to culinary discovery. Remember, Terpenes are in everything plant based, so no matter what you are cookin’ up in life - don’t forget about the Terps.

Buds & Beers Honey Blu Blu Cider

Farmer’s Daughter IPA

Honey Blu Blu hard cider and Lemon Haze are like hand in glove if you ask the taste testers at Higher Living. The sweet, yet tart, balanced taste of Blu Blu is a perfect match up with a citrusy strain like Lemon Haze. We suggest a road trip with a growler to Tenacity. Once you are home, enjoy the tastes of harvest in two of the best ways possible. You might even drop a dropper of our tincture recipe from this issue if your not down with the smoke.

It’s time that you got with the Farmer’s Daughter. Well at least Tenacity Brewing’s version. This full bodied, boozy IPA get to the point right away. Plenty of pine flavors that go great with something like, Grand Daddy Purple. The heavy pine flavor of this strain pair up well to any strong bodied IPA, but we feel that Farmer’s Daughter is a perfect match.

Tenacity Brewing

Sassy Lassie Scotch Ale Tenacity Brewing

The smooth, Smokey flavor of a wee heavy style beer is one for the big kids table (21+). It is also one of our favorite styles of beer. The subtle tastes of roasted malt and peat with a boozy kick give Sassy Lassie a smooth, interesting taste that cozies right up to a strain like Blue Cheese. Hey man, we warned you that this is for the mature palate and this combo does not disappoint. We suggest a meat and cheese plate along with Sassy Lassie and the Blue Cheese weed for a winter evening in.

Tenacity Brewing

Basic Bitch Blonde Tenacity Brewing

This light bodied easy to drink beer will have you doing twelve ounce curls all night. With the lower alcohol, Basic Bitch is a great beer to drop some tincture into. If you want to enjoy just a couple of Bitch’s, our tincture can get you nice and relaxed without the fog of too many “pops” the next day. Of course you know that you should go in easy with any mixing of alcohol and weed. You can always add more, but you can’t take away. And just for mentioning, you should never smoke, drink and drive. Stay safe out there.

Chronic Tincture

O

riginally the form of medicating with Cannabis in the early 20th Century was primarily in the way of tinctures. A tincture is as simple as infusing decarboxylated weed into a very high alcohol based liquor like Everclear. Check at your local bottle shop for Everclear. It is usually a dusty bottle on the bottom shelf, but don’t worry about it’s age. Everclear can stand the test of time for storage, so you should be able to mix up many batches of tincture with the same bottle. If you can’t find Everclear, go for something like a 151 based rum. We are running this recipe with a high quality concentrate like, badder, shatter or butter. Start out in a 245° oven to decarboxylate the concentrate. You will leave it in a small, oven safe glass container and watch for all of the bubbles to quit popping then it’s now activated and ready for duty. This process takes about a half an hour, but don’t rush it. When the bubbles are

done, so is the process and not before. Now we need to roll on to the next step of infusing the activated Cannabis with the booze. For this you will need to set up a simple double boiler. Use caution when you have Everclear by the stove. It is extremely flammable and by that we mean be careful. In the first pan put about 4 quarts of water and bring up to a low temperature. In a separate small jar combine 2 oz of Everclear and the contents of your decarbed concentrate. Do this step AWAY from the heat. Carefully sit the jar in the warm water on the stove and let it get happy for about four hours. After this it’s ready to use. A dropper full should get you started. You can squirt the tincture into your mouth, but expect the pure grain alcohol to burn like hell, even in the small quantity. We like to drop it into mixed drinks, food and beer. Expect from a half an hour to ninety minutes for the full effect. Remember, you can always add more. If you just are not confident in your ability to remain safe around a stove, you can also add the decarbed weed into Everclear that has been hanging out in the freezer. Add the concentrate to the Everclear and shake vigorously. After that, put it back in the freezer and repeat the process of every hour for as long as you have patience. It takes at least 3 to 4 hours and it is not as strong as the heat infused method, but it’s still potent. We use the Chronic Tincture in some the drink recipes in this issue of Higher Living INGREDIENTS: 1 G Cannabis Concentrate 2 Oz Everclear or other high alcohol liquor

Canna Gin

W

LME

hile many infused alcohol recipes try to mask the taste of the marijuana plant, we are here with something different. Canna Gin! Canna Gin celebrates the diversity of herbal additions that include juniper berries, pepper corns and mIXED HERBS. We profess our love of concentrates for making consistent, evenly dosed servings and in this concoction we use a combination of concentrates and activated bud. The main hit of THC comes from the decarbed (see box) concentrate and the heady scent comes from the herbal mixture that includes one gram of decarboxylated flower. You can heat the ingredients in a double boiler, but if you want to hit the baller Gin legend status we recommend Sous Vide. This method incorporates a wand that heats up and circulates water in a container. It gives you ultimate temperature control in a set it and forget it nature. Combine the entire bottle of vodka and an 2 oz. activated tincture found on page 34. Add in the herbal mixture in a small sachet and let it steep together at about 150° for five to twelve hours. The longer you keep at temp, the better the infusion. If the heated route isn’t for you, combine the ingredients

and let it set there for a few days before use. The longer it sets, the better it gets. Pull out the sachet and you now have an amazing Canna Gin that celebrates the taste of weed instead of hiding it. 2 oz Cannabis Tincture 750ml High Quality Vodka 1/2 teaspoon coriander seeds 1 teaspoon chamomile 1/2 teaspoon lavender 3 cardamom pods, broken 1 bay leaf 4 allspice berries two 4-inch pieces of grapefruit peel, with no pith Pro tip - many home brew stores now carry kits that include everything in one box to make gin (with the exception of the vodka). This can be an easy way to acquire everything you need in one shot. Our favorite source is Adventures in Home Brewing. They have two michigan locations in Ann Arbor and Taylor.

HOW TO: Cannabis decarboxylation or as the rest of us call it “decarbing”. This is the step where we alter the concentrate so it will actually get you high. If you skip this step, you will not get the effects of the cannabis. It is very easy to do this. Preheat oven to 245° and put your concentrate in a heat safe glass or our staff favorite, a silicone food grade container. Keep it small. Put the container into the oven and start watching for bubbles. The concentrate will liquify, once all the bubbling stops you are good to go to the next step. This should take anywhere from a half-hour to an hour.

High Watt Hot Totty TPE Nothing like a warm hug inside from this modernized recipe of a classic. Last month we showed you how to make your own delicious Canna Honey. You can find it at higherlivingtoday.com/recipes if you missed it. CBD honey is also nice as a substitution for the THC infused Canna Honey if your not feeling it. The addition of Cinnamon Whisky to the classic brings up the flavor big time. If this drink doesn’t match up with a warm fire and a smooth smoking heavy Indica just perfect, we probably can’t be friends. 1 oz (2 tablespoons) bourbon 1/4 oz Cinnamon Whiskey 1 tablespoon Canna Honey 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 1/4 cup boiling-hot water 2 Cinnamon sticks

Gin and Chronic

LME

This is super good pairing of Ferndale’s Valentine Distilling’s Liberator Gin and a splash of Towne Club Tonic. This drink is killer as is, but with the addition of the Chronic tincture (see previous page) it will light you up. The quality of the gin really makes a difference here, and Valentine does not disappoint. With the addition of a lime slice and a Keef & Lavender sachet, you will discover a whole new way to enjoy your Gin and Chronic. In a Highball glass filled with ice add: 1 part Liberator Gin Top off with Tonic and stir well Add a lime wedge and rim the glass with fresh lime 1 to 2 drops Chronic Tincture Float the sachet of Keef and Lavender for a fresh HERBAL taste

OCM

This super easy to make home cocktail is Higher Living’s tip of the hat to the phenomenon of flavored soda water adult beverages. This drink couldn’t be easier to make and is very easy to scale up for a party. We are sticking to the single serving in this recipe. Simple ingredients like a great michigan made Vodka and some Faygo flavored soda water, you’re good to go for sure. Now, if you really want to next level that shit brah - add some chronic tincture. All kidding aside, a little bit of flavor concentrate from Adventures in Home Brewing can take the bland to rad in a couple of drops. You might end up adding it to your 50 pack of blandness you just picked up from the local mart. 1/2 oz of Michigan Vodka 8 oz of Faygo flavored soda water 1 or 2 drops of Canna Tincture 1 small citrus wedge squeezed in Fresh citrus fruit wedge and mint for a garnish

munchies Red Eyes Gravy CYE

THC infused gravy is all the rage this season. It seems like every time we turn around, we read about gravy, gravy, gravy! We are going to show you how to make this delectable, stoner delight in a few easy steps. Keep in mind, no matter what kind of gravy hound you are, go in light and add more later. It is in bad form to pour this delicious recipe directly into your gullet, but who are we to judge. Enjoy on potatoes, stuffing and more. Follow along for this wavy gravy in a few simple steps. Combine a small amount of stock and or drippings from a delicious hunk of meat to a pan with a spoonful of flower. This time we mean plain old, white flower - not weed (that is coming in a second). Stir until it is lump free.

Add salt, pepper and any other herbs that you love to taste.

“You’re on a gravy train with biscuit wheels.” —Ernie McCracken Kingpin

At the end spoon in about a tablespoon of Canna Coco (recipe in November Higher Living and HigherLivingToday. com/recipes) and let it melt in. Enjoy with other adults or yourself for a night of Higher Living - gravy style. Expect a half an hour to ninety minutes for the gravy to take full effect.

3

S

ince we are on the gravy train, we figure we should sweeten the pot if you will. We know that this “gravy” is really an enhanced chocolate sauce, but what the hell? It’s our magazine and we are calling it GRAVY! You can enjoy this gravy on fresh fruit, cake or poured directly down your pie hole. Start by melting down some semi-sweet chocolate chunks or chips. This works best in a double boiler but can be done in one pan as well. The higher the fat content, the better for this waist expander. Add 2 tablespoons of corn starch to 2 tablespoons of water and stir until you have a slurry. Add the chocolate slurry and stir in. After everything is silky smooth, add in two tablespoons of Canna Coco (as seen in November’s issue and at HigherLivingToday. com/recipes) and let that melt in. Serve immediately and enjoy!
