Welcome! We welcome you to our 7th Annual High Country Droughtmaster Bull and Female Sale. Our breeding objectives remain as strong as ever, bolstered by the performance of our breeders during what was the worst season any of us have seen in decades. Despite bare paddocks, they weaned heavy calves and had a 97% pregnancy rate. It is from this herd that we continue to strive to offer you cattle with superior genetics, performance and fertility, providing you with an excellent return on your investment. This year, we are proud to offer you 40 bulls and 20 females for your selection. Exciting new genetics this year include the outstanding $47500 Glenlands D Whynot as well as Glenlands D Ventura, Valera Vale Kenworth, Bryvonlea Rambo, our own retained sires High Country Game on and HC Factor and the first from Coes Creek Comet. This year also sees the last opportunity to secure bloodlines from a sire that had a huge impact on our herd, Glenlands Quarry. This continual blend of new and proven genetics ensures we can offer you unrelated bloodlines every year and we are proud to be one of the few studs that can offer an extensive range of over 20 current stud sires. We also continue to provide you useful data by measuring this performance and efficiency in terms of fertility (semen motility and morphology), growth, milk and birthweight (Group Breedplan) and carcass traits (scanning for EMA, IMF, fat depth). You can also purchase with confidence knowing our lots are SeekSire DNA confirmed as well as Horn/Poll tested, Pompes and Pestivirus (PI) negative and all of our herds are JBAS 7 WA. We fully vaccinate our draft and further details can be found on our Health and Preparation page and our Test Interpretation page. As well as these measurements and tests, we also aim for our cattle to have longevity. We therefore select for structural correctness, good feet, calm temperaments and prepare our bulls on a forage-based diet to maintain overall health. Feedback from our clients has confirmed the success of this plan with bulls holding their condition, achieving high pregnancy rates and staying structurally and reproductively sound each season. We happily and confidently therefore again offer our 100% customer satisfaction guarantee as well as our free 6 mth insurance on every lot (details on Sale summary page). Our aim will continue to be to produce the best cattle we possibly can and to back them completely to ensure you are happy with your purchase. As our stud operation has grown, so has our brilliant team. Special thanks to our hard working, dedicated team, Steph, Cory, Neil, Travis, Lachlan and Dave. Thanks, must also go to our co-operative breeders, whose performance focus sees our combined herds improving exponentially each year. We are once again proud to have our sale in the hands of local agents Shepherdson and Boyd and thank them for their continued support. We also would like to thank Wayne York, as well as Elite Livestock auctions for all of their efforts and focus on sale day. Thank you also to Paul Aikas from Design Evolution for producing this fantastic catalogue. We wish everyone the best of luck bidding today and wish all of you the very best with your successful purchases.

Testimonials At Ashvale Station, we run approximately 1500 breeders and are moving towards running two seperate Droughtmaster herds, a pure herd for breeding replacements and a crossbreeding herd. We have purchased High Country bulls annually since 2015 both at auction and in the paddock. These bulls, prepared on a silage based preparation, have been taken straight from the sale and worked solidly in staggered matings. They have never missed a beat and have proved to be everything we wanted and more. Looking just as good as when we purchased them, they had high conception rates, especially in the first 28 days of joining and were bloody good workers. Calving ease has also been impressive. We have never specifically picked “heifer bulls”, but all of the bulls have produced small calves, born like spaghetti that pile on the weight and grow like mushrooms. This year, the first of our High Country blood heifers will be mated and I can’t wait to see how they go. A tremendous line of females with great growth for age and conformation, they will of course be mated to High Country bulls because we are 100% confident of their calving ability. Temperament is another massive benefit to our operation. It is unreal! Not only are the bulls

awesome, but the calves are second to none. The bulls are no fuss at all when handled in groups or on their own and the calves are sensational, showing common sense from the moment they are weaned. I am greatly looking forward to having a Droughtmaster breeder herd greatly influenced by the High Country bloodlines. Their doing ability, high fertility and impeccable temperament make them a pleasure to work with. Paul, Lisa and their daughter Steph run a tremendous operation, taking the time to get to know their clients needs and working hard to fulfill that order. They breed real cattle for the real world, surpassing our expectations, doing as they claim in a working environment and not just the showring. David Thallon, Ashvale Station, Harlin Qld.

We have purchased a number of joined and unjoined High Country females and have been thrilled with their performance. They are extremely quiet, easy to handle and an absolute joy to have in the paddock. Highly fertile, they calve easily, milk well, and have each produced quality calves, the most notable of which is Nindethana Henrietta who has been a successful member of our show team during the 2016 and 2017 show season, winning multiple broad ribbons including Junior Champion heifer at 2016 Royal Queensland Show. We have also been extremely happy with how easy the High Country team is to deal with and the wonderful after sales service.

Bronwyn Betts & Michael Hawkins, Nindethana Droughtmasters, Camp Mountain Queensland.

Test Interpretation Horn/Poll The Horn/Poll test utilises new SNP technology to provide accurate data on the genotype of the animal (not just the phenotype or how it appears). It provides information about whether the animal carries two copies of the Poll gene (PP - homozygous), or one copy of the gene (PH - heterozygous). Poll/horn status of calves depends on what these bulls are mated to. Homozygous (PP) animals will never produce a horned calf. Heterozygous (PH) bulls will never produce a horned calf if mated to homozygous polled females. If a PH bull is mated to genetically scurred PH females, 75% of the calves will not have horns. If a PH bull is mated to horned HH cows, 50% of the calves will not have horns. NB: A rare occurrence in Bos Indicus cattle is the so called “African horn gene” where rarely a calf born to cows carrying this gene can have horns regardless of the poll variants of the bull. Pestivirus PI This test determines whether an animal is ‘persistently infected’ (PI) with Pestivirus. Affected whilst still in the uterus, PI animals never mount an immune response against the virus, accepting it into their body before their immune system has become effective. These animals shed virus throughout their life the same as they would shed skin or hair cells and are directly responsible for spreading Pestivirus through a herd, causing abortions, stillbirths and low pregnancy rates. All of our animals have been tested PI negative. Morphology Semen quality has a massive impact on pregnancy rates within a herd and affects profitability as fertility is a key performance indicator. Semen motility or a ‘crush side’ test only provides half the story as it merely indicates the percentage of progressively motile (or normally swimming) cells. Morphology is the assessment of a sample of 100 sperm cells which looks for further faults within the seemingly normal cells. These microscopic changes can include faults that allow affected cells to enter the ovum (egg), prevent other cells entering, only to either not produce a pregnancy or to produce an embryo that is not viable. Bulls can pass sperm motility ‘crush side’ tests, but still be infertile if their morphology % is low. Morphology therefore is a much more detailed assessment of sperm cells and provides a far better idea of the fertility of a bull. SeekSireTM SeekSireTM parentage testing compares DNA markers from the sires with DNA markers from the calves to verify the parentage. Billabong Watson (single sired), Oasis Buster (single sired) and the two Quarry sons (both in paddock) did not have DNA on file. Lot 31, Lot 41 and Lot 50 did not match any of our other sires. No other bulls had access to their dams. Pompes disease An inherited genetic disorder that involves a deficiency of an essential enzyme which in turn causes glycogen to build up in muscle and nerve cells, affecting function and ultimately causing death in the animal. A recessive disorder, it involves a mutation of the E7 gene and requires an affected gene to be passed down from both the sire and the dam. Animals with two copies of the gene have the disorder and succumb to the disease and die within the first 12 months of life. Our genetic testing picks up animals that are ‘carriers’ of the disease and carry one defective gene. They show no signs, but can pass this on to their offspring. This disease is found in Brahmans, Shorthorns and all derivatives of these breeds. Our sale lots have tested negative as either carriers or affected by this rare disease.

Co-operative breeder herds High Country Droughtmasters and the growth of both the stud and sale is a passion for our family. This love of what we do has led us to meet some wonderful like minded fellow breeders over the past 9 years, which we are very grateful to be able to call friends. We are very proud to have forged long-term relationships with these wonderful people, allowing us to share genetics for the betterment of both our herds whilst enjoying breeding and producing ever improving cattle. These are our co-operative breeders…

Ivan and Carol Hayes – Coes Creek Droughtmasters Wonderful people and with an impressive herd of large framed, higher content breeders, initially with a strong influence of Billabong bloodlines that has produced a herd of easy maintenance and easy doing females that are both milky and excellent mothers. We, through this herd, have access to genetics from Billabong Archer, Billabong Winday and Coes Creek Comet. Equally, Ivan and Carol annually choose sires and have utilised Oasis Wallace from our sire battery. We are grateful to be able to work so closely with Ivan and Carol and proudly offer you bulls that share their genetics.

John and Deb Walton – Biarra Glen Droughtmasters Running a very successful and extremely diverse set of agricultural units, John and Deb are neighbours of ours, who we originally met through admiring their beautiful herd of Droughtmaster breeders. Based originally on Happy Valley bloodlines, the herd comprises purebred, moderately framed, fertile, smooth coated and feminine females, now run as commercials. John and Deb have utilised Yaralla Satler and High Country Factor with this herd. We thank John and Deb for this opportunity to utilise their herd, thereby allowing us to offer even more commercial bulls by this range of sires.

Tim Collins and David Thallon – Ashvale Station Originally, Ashvale Station were clients of ours and purchasers of our bulls at the annual sale. Feedback that we received was that our bulls were performing well, getting plenty of calves that were born small and growing quickly. We were privileged to forge a partnership with Tim and David and they have allowed us access to their young herd of genetically strong purebred females. Ashvale Station continues to purchase individual bulls annually from us to fulfil their needs. We also share a range of bulls from our sire battery annually. Currently, Clonlara 14212 and Billabong Castlemaine. We are excited by the potential of Ashvale Station and again feel privileged to be able to offer commercial bulls from this partnership.
