Finance January Offering MTD:

Problem Solving—Getting to the Real Problem The Five Whys is a methodology developed by Toyota as part of their commitment to production excellence. The idea is that asking “Why?” five times will normally take you to the root problem that needs to be solved as opposed to solving a mere symptom of the problem. Amazon’s Jeff Bezos used this methodology when he discovered that one of his workers had badly damaged his thumb in a conveyor belt accident. Here was Bezos’ use of the Five Whys.
Why did the associate damage his thumb? Be-

cause his thumb got caught in the conveyor.
Why did his thumb get caught in the conveyor? Because he was chasing his bag, which was on a running conveyor.
Why did he chase his bag? Because he placed his bag on the conveyor, but it then turned-on by surprise.
Why was his bag on the conveyor? Because he used the conveyor as a table since there was no other place to place his bag. In this case the root cause and ultimate culprit was a missing table...and it only took four "Whys?" though I think its appropriate to ask, "Why don't we have any tables / space for employees to stash their personal goods?" The Five Whys methodology is certainly not the silver bullet for solving every problem. But it is a good tool to have in the problemsolving tool kit of any ministry leader. Einstein said, “If I was given an hour to save the world,

I’d spend 59 minutes on defining the problem and one minute on solving the problem. The Five Why’s help define the problem: ***************** Lets use the “Five Whys approach” in our Christian lives in this Lunar New Year. Perhaps it will help us to find the real problems that keep us from growing as believers. Here is an example of how we might use the “Five Whys approach.” I do not have time to meet with God to read and pray in the morning? Why don’t you have time? Because I am too weary to get up 30 minutes early. Why are you too weary to get up earlier? Because I don’t go to bed until midnight. Why don’t you go to bed earlier? Because I like to watch TV late at night. Why don’t you stop watching TV at 11:00 pm? Because I like that late night programs. So the root cause is not being too weary or not having time in the morning. With asking four “why” questions we find the root problem. “I prefer late night TV over meeting with God in the morning.” This points to an even deeper root problem – my love for God or commitment to Him. Try this in solving a problem that is blocking you right now from becoming who you would like to become. And maybe you can share this with a friend. Become a problem solver with just “Five Whys”.
